NBA: Breaking down the moves so far
Mike Monroe
Several unrestricted free agents already have agreed to deals or signed deals with new teams. Here’s a look at the impact of their signings with analysis from Express-News NBA beat writer Mike Monroe.
MAJOR MOVERS
Elton Brand, Sixers PF
The deal: The former Clippers star reportedly has reached an agreement on a five-year, $82 million deal.
Sixers’ starting lineup: PG Andre Miller, SG Andre Iguodala, SF Thaddeus Young, PF Brand, C Samuel Dalembert
Monroe’s take: Brand has wanted to return to East Coast for years. Run-and-gun Sixers just gained a slew of outlet passes.
Baron Davis, Clippers PG
The deal: The former Warriors guard has reached an agreement on a reported five-year, $65 million deal.
Clippers’ starting lineup: TBD. Davis will start at point guard and Chris Kaman at center, but beyond that it’s unknown. The Los Angeles Times reports the Clippers are expected to pursue Hawks restricted free-agent SF Josh Smith and Bobcats restricted free-agent C Emeka Okafor.
Monroe’s take: Davis likes to call himself “Boom Dizzle,” but for now “BD” stands for Bonehead Davis.
POSITIVE FALLOUT
Chris Duhon, Knicks PG
The deal: The former Bulls guard signed Wednesday, reportedly for two years and $6.5 million.
Knicks’ starting lineup: PG Duhon, SG Jamal Crawford, SF Quentin Richardson, PF Zach Randolph, C Eddy Curry
Monroe’s take: He’s no Stephon Marbury, and that’s high praise. Knicks are back in East playoffs with Duhon running point.
Corey Maggette, Warriors G/F
The deal: Former Clippers SG/SF agreed to deal that’s reportedly worth $50 million over five years.
Warriors’ starting lineup: PG Monta Ellis, SG Stephen Jackson, SF Maggette, PF Al Harrington, C Andris Biedrins
Monroe’s take: He said he’d made enough money and just wanted to win. In the end, he took the money.
James Jones, Heat SF
The deal: Ex-Blazers forward signed Wednesday. Two years at about $4 million, but the next three are conditional.
Heat’s starting lineup: TBD. Count on Dwyane Wade and rookie F Michael Beasley staying, but the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that F Shawn Marion or PF Udonis Haslem could be traded.
Monroe’s take: You can go home again. Former Miami prep star wanted Heat, and got them.
Mickael Pietrus, Magic G/F
The deal: Former Warriors swingman expected to sign four-year deal worth a reported $25 million.
Magic’s starting lineup: PG Jameer Nelson, SG Pietrus, SF Hedo Turkoglu, PF Rashard Lewis, C Dwight Howard
Monroe’s take: A poor man’s Maggette, but younger and less costly. In other words, he should have been a Spur.
Still out there
Notable unrestricted free agents who are still available include Celtics SF James Posey , Nuggets PF Eduardo Najera, Nuggets G/F Yakhouba Diawara and Pistons SF Jarvis Hayes . Restricted free agents include Hawks SF Josh Smith , Bobcats C Emeka Okafor and Nuggets SG J.R. Smith.
