Officially now, the team is worse than last year's and significantly worse than the championship team of 2007.
Because Barry is gone... :lol
Or because Horry is gone? :rollin

We will all be laughing at this 10+ page thread over Barry leaving next season. He's not important to the Spurs at this stage of his career. It's not like he's going to help the Rockettes get past the first round of the playoffs. That's not going to happen, you can quote me on that.

Cut the effing drama, whiners. The Spurs mgt. knows what they are doing better than we do, and they evaluate talent better than we do, and they are presumably doing the best they can with limited cap space to bring in an upgraded roster. Quit the whining about Barry leaving, the hating on Finley. Its okay to criticize, its every fan's right. But put a sock in it after awhile! Shut up!
Have some faith already!
Sad for Spurs
Good Luck Brent!!!

Thanks to Barry for what he did while he was here!
But age and a bad calf, not to mention almost being traded for JR Smith and then traded this year - well, the writing has been on the wall for a while now.

I am reminded of a song:
I ain't tellin' no lie.
Mine's a tale that can't be told,
My freedom I hold dear;
How years ago in days of old
When magic filled the air,
T'was in the darkest depths of Mordor
I met a girl so fair,
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up
And slipped away with her.
Her, her....yea.
Ain't nothing I can do, no.
Gonna ramble on, sing my song
Gotta keep-a-searchin' for my baby...
Gonna work my way, round the world
I can't stop this feelin' in my heart
Gotta keep searchin' for my baby
I can't find my bluebird!
I'd listen to my bluebird sing but I can't find my blue bird
A-keep-a ramblin' baby...
Oh, Gee!!

Off the point, but have any of you fellow posters in here that are in their 40's and up noticed that they know lyrics of songs from 20 yrs ago much better than new songs that they have even heard 100 times on the radio and on your ipods? I buy new stuff all the time, but I just do not memorize the lyrics like I used to. I digress, sorry.
The Rockets are really starting to piss me off.

Spurs is full of ancient players. They not need Barry. They also not need these old players like Finley and Thomas. They need get some young players. Hill and Mason is decent start at this.

Horry is just done. I agree his brain was great, but man the Spurs palyed four on five last season in the playoffs with him on the court. It was painful how bad he was at times. His defense was still there once or twice in the post season but otherwise he was just plain done.
In Horry's case, his decline was all too obvious on too many occasions. He wanted to attribute his bad season to injury. Yet he was absent at the start of the season (family matter), injured for a large part of his return and out of shape for the rest. He was incredibly slow to the ball and late for rebounds, as it appeared he could no longer move his feet. It appeared as though his body and mind were simply no longer in sync. If that wasn't convincing enough, I knew when I saw Robert Horry passing up open shots, the way he did during the Fakers series, that he was done.
I honestly feel the Spurs are going back to their defensive roots, and he doens't fit in with that scenario. .
If the Spurs are truly going back to their defensive roots, then Finley surely doesn't fit that mold either. He needs to go the way of Stoudamire and Horry.
These guys were great, and they may have a tiny bit left in the tank but you have to move on at some point. The Spurs gave them a shot last season and it was just painful to watch their vets play at times. While Barry was by far the best he also spent much of the season sidelined due to an injury that occured twice in the year. You have to take his possible health issues into consideration as well.
I agree with you. The Spurs probably gave these guys one season too many - and they paid for it. The results (or lack thereof) were evident during the playoffs, where the bench contributions (sans Manu) were as weak and woefully inconsistent as we've ever seen during these championship years.
It is sad, but real. Older players tend to become more injury-prone. Many of which can no longer contribute every night. As I've stated many times, the athlete is often the LAST to know how far his skills have declined. However one thing is certain: the longer you hang around, the more likely you're not going to leave on your own terms. I'm glad the FO has finally sought to address this.
We are going to miss Barry when Mason starts bricking 3's in the WCSF.

i don;t get all the Horry hate... he still had a clutch play against the NOH... and the Spurs NEVER before got passed the second round when defending their title... :wakeup

07-11-2008, 11:31 AM
SAS could not keep all the older guys. I wish Barry would have stayed because his shot is pure (basically a set shot) and does not require a ton of jumping ability. That is also why he got a good offer from another team - he can help a team in spurts like he did in the playoffs. Mason is taking his spot here. A ten year age difference is huge, especially with guards. The Spurs felt like they got a more complete, younger player for an extra $1MM per year. Let's face it, Brent only played a third of a season due to physical problems. A 37 year old guard is generally already in the rocking chair.
Horry should only come back as a minimum salary vet (like Vaughn). Finley is two years younger than Barry and is VERY durable. I think he is a player who can continue to contribute here and probably justify a better deal than the minimum. I say this because he does get out there just about every night and does not tend to get dinged up and miss time.
I would also not be surprised if the leg problems continue to dog Barry. He will not have to worry as much about defense in Houston because of his coach there. Effort and energy on the defensive end is left up to the bigs in Houston, not the guards. Remember Barry hurt the calf on the defensive end of the floor.

You're confusing hate with criticism. The guy is old and done. It's nothing to be ashamed of. It happens to every athlete. It doesn't mean that he wasn't a good pro and a valuable contributor. It just no longer makes sense to keep him around anymore.
Horry simply needs to realize that he can no longer perform at the level he once did. Does he have something left? Probably. But not enough to contribute on a night-in and night-out basis like the Spurs need. And certainly not enough to warrant wasting a roster spot on him.
He can play if he wants - he just can't play here anymore. It's that simple. If he doesn't want to retire - wait and see if the phone rings. After all, Gary Payton is still waiting too. Personnel decisions are never personal, it's just business and Pop would be doing the franchise a disservice just to continue keeping these guys around because of loyalty.

Don't get mad, because I said Lindsey stinks......he does stink, I didn't like him when he was a Rocket.
As far as Houston and the playoffs......it's about building blocks, Barry is one of the small blocks (plus he cost practically nothing) and learning the new system (Houston should be much better in year 2 under Adelman....Barry is going to help the ball movement and knock down those open 3s Houston always gets).

Tmac has now gone 2 full seasons without a severe back problem......when he saw that which doctor who said his back spams were cured, Rocket fans didn't believe him.....but so far he's been right.
As far as Yao....yes he's injury prone, but Houston proved last year they can win without him. All we need is for him to be available for the playoffs.
Houston has acquired depth (Scola helped out alot in that area....and Landry) Depth that now allows Houston to absorb the hits of injury. Houston has stock piled young talent and they actually have a decent future....a much better future then your letting on. Tmac's contract comes off the books (and they'll probably resign Tmac for much cheaper) right in time for the 2010 blockbuster FA.....they'll have some of the most cap dollars to spend and they'll still have enough talent to attract some of the league's best payers.

In the Kübler-Ross Grief Cycle, the second stage is one of blind denial. In order, the stages are: Shock, Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Testing, Acceptance.
I think some people are in the second stage, when they see Rockets play against Spurs next season they will be in stage 3. Then afterwards stage 4. Then heading towards playoff stage 5. Then during the playoff stage 6. Then when we win the championship, the will come to the last stage: Acceptance.

What did SA win last year?
I mean, I love how you like to talk crap about Houston, but the fact is.....both of our teams are trying to improve. SA is trying to get back to that championship level, Houston is trying to build a chamionship caliber team. Houston whether you want to believe it or not......is a talented team and a team that is going to be better than last year for the simple fact that they won't be spending half the season learning a new system. Brent Barry will give Houston another player that can move the ball and drain open 3s (Houston get's more open looks from three than possible any team in the league.) Brent Barry also means less Luther Head.....that's a drastic improvement right there. :lol

Its nothing wrong with rockets foundation, like most stars for most teams our stars have had their share of injuries. Rockets probs lie with our supporting cast. Luther head who becomes gun shy in the playoffs and can not figure out how to pass to yao in the post, chuck hayes who is offensively challanged. Hes 6'6 no athleticism and undersized against most 4s. Steve novak who can shoot lights out but is a defensive liability. Rockets have a new supporting cast every yr and rather our stars are injured or not we seem to be a top 5 team in the west each yr. It takes patience and time

NJ... No fan base outside of US Continental Arena
Pistons... did fairly well.
Cavs... two small market teams with everyone knowing the Spurs were going to win. Also, Lebron isn't a star outside of the NBA world.
Funny enough, two of the largest markets in the NBA finals this year didn't do great either.

Really, and what does Houston have? How many years ago was it that there was a contest to win a trip to Houston and no one entered? Houston has the probably the nicest arenas for 3 sports than any city in the US, but the problem is that each of those franchises are sub-par at best. At least we're spending our taxes on a winner.
