The Orlando Magic will rid themselves of SG JJ Redick acording to leauge scources. GM Otis Smith has been working the phones in efforts to get something for the former 11th overall pick. Would he be a good fit for the Spurs?

Fin, Barry, Oberto are all poor defenders. This guy can score when he gets mins and is a better defender than Fin ever was and he is only 24.

Bonner for Reddick....wouldnt hurt either way
I think they are trying to shed salary, e.g. a TE would be good or a team under cap, so they wouldn't have to take anything back.

Finley might disagree
Fin disagrees that he cant play anymore too. But we all saw hes finished. We need scoring and a guy to replace Barry.
Bonner for Reddick....wouldnt hurt either way
Yes, it would.
Reddick would be a major downgrade over Bonner. Bonner's knows the system, and plays along the front line where the Spurs are a little thin.

I have seen him play a bunch and when he gets mins he can really score. Orlando didnt use him because they are small in the back court and needed a shut down guy at the 2. But in games (exclude garb time) where JJ got over 10 min per game, he averaged 11.2ppg in 17mins. Thats a very high rate. He can also get into the paint and draw fouls. In the right system I think he is a perfect #3 guy who can get 15-17ppg. Not bad to be our 8th-9th man to have a guy with that type of potiental
And there is a reason that Smith is having trouble finding a taker--Reddick stinks! My predecition is that the Magic throw in the towel and buy him out.

problem with reddick is hes way to one dimensional. cant defend, cant pass to well, and is too short for a SG.
but it wouldnt hurt to try him out and ship out bonner for a cheaper youngin

I would def go for JJ....You can't say that the man cant LEARN to play defense bc he came from Duke. Coach K runs a tight operation over there. JJ just suffered from being a little bit overrated and went to a team that expected him to do to much. A lesser role here may be exactly what he needs. Not everyone has everything in their arsenal, you need some role players......JJ Redick = Spot up assasin, thats his role

HAHA its time to be realistic basketball fans. You can't put together a team who has All Stars on the bench, and alll stars on the court. You gotta wake up. He may be mediocre in rebounding or assists, but for wat he claims to specialize in, SHOOTING, he's good

Exactly. There is always room for specialist. Especially on the bench. We can not trade Bonner for him, we are thin up front, but the TE or maybe a 2nd rounder and something could be possible.

The year Redick was drafted I read a scouting report on him: this report said very definitively that JJ wouldn't succeed in the NBA because of what is sometimes referred to as "T-Rex" syndrome--arms that are short in relation to a player's height. I wasn't a huge fan of Redick's anyway, but I was surprised at the time by how absolutely certain the scout sounded. I would rather the Spurs pick up a cheap Big man. Looking at the roster now, the Spurs are short on big bodies: Kurt is tough but slightly undersized for a center, Mahinmi is still young and on the slender side, Bonner's just not a banger... An injury to Oberto or the other three could mean increased minutes on Tim, and even without injuries, I wonder about the ability to deal with Bynum, Oden, Chandler-- Tim can handle any of them in the 4th quarter, but it would be nice to have someone else to throw their weight around. The Celtics signed Patrick O'Bryant this week-- I'm thinking someone along those lines.

Scouts also said Tony would be a backup at best, Manus game is not made for NBA, that the spurs wasted a pick when they took Ian. We can go on and on.
Fact of the matter J.J. has good quickness, his wingspan was on the plus side so not like he is short armed. He is a dead eye shooter and can draw contact and get to the line.
We he gets mins he scores at a very high rate nearly the same rate as Manu. He is 24yrs old and is stuck on a team that has 4 player who can do what he does so he is wasting away. He would be a great addition to any team but in a system like the spurs he could flurish and take pressure off Tim.
Does anyone remember us going thru games where we couldnt hit an outside shot? This guy can stroke the 3 in his sleep.

I'm not sure how anyone can make a decision on Redick since there's really not much film on him since college. He's worth taking a chance on if someone will give him some PT, but this isn't an environment known for being generous with minutes for young players.

Which is what makes me nervous that the Spurs only have 10 players under contract, one of which is a young Ian. Then they are looking to possibly add 3 youngsters in Hill, Hairston and Gist. That means if that happens 4 of the 13 players we would have under contract at that point would get very little opportunity to play.

Pop's basically committed to Hill and Ian as long as they don't completely suck, and Hairston and Gist are going to get the Charles Smith/Stephen Jackson treatment. He's also got some personal stake in these guys. I'm not worried about them, particularly since they have summer league as an audition. You bring in Redick, and there's no guarantee he doesn't get put at the end of the bench the first time he dribbles the ball off his foot or is perceived as missing a defensive rotation. At that point he becomes Pop's tirade sounding board, and I'd rather have Bonner in that position than Redick, because at least he's tall.

I'm not criticizing Redick-- I'm just relating a story and how it made an impression on me. But i still think they need another big before another guard.

I was not at all suggesting we trade Bonner for him. At this point, not only do we need bigs, but Bonner deserves a shot at Horry's minutes. I was just saying, we will have a roster spot possibly and if we can get him for 2nd round draft picks or TE, I would not mind. I just have a feeling Spurs fans are expecting too much from our young guns, it takes time.

Neither was I. Bonner is currently the guy Pop yells at and benches to scare everyone else. If JJ's brought in, he probably fills that role, at which point Bonner has no use at all. It was kind of a joke, but not the funny kind.

It's been proven that being Pop's whipping boy can improve a player, but only if it's coupled with minutes. If it's coupled with benching as punishment then a player plays not to fuck up rather than playing to improve.

He is not great on defense, but he is an outstanding shooter and moves well without the ball....I would love it if the Rockets somehow got him...
Redick on the right team is a double digit scorer in the NBA.
