JR Smith was in the crwod at UNLV to take in some summer league action and told he was really hoping to land in San Antonio, but thinks Roger Mason got his spot.

HOOPSWORLD is whack but it reads like this is straight from JR's mouth. Did Spurs fans want JR or RoMa Jr.?

Obviously JR Smith, but the Spurs could not offer anything that the Nuggets would not match, so we would have lost out on Mason Jr. He also would have cost more, but that would of been ok.

Then ask to be traded. I think the spurs knew Denver would match.

At this point, I think Mason was the safe pick... I'm sure the Spurs heavily considered JR & I'm sure he would want a full MLE deal, while I know he can score, he has alot of things going against him as far as being a typical Spur "type" player & I was never really sold on him for a full MLE deal... max cap room in 2010 >>>>>>>JR

Dang.

He would have cured the boredom blues down in South Texas.

Tell him to hold out 1 more year, become an UFA, and perhaps the Spurs will make another run at him.

I'll take 'em both.

That doesn't sound too far-fetched. If he keeps saying stuff like this, and matures during next season, the Spurs would probably emerge as the favorites to land him. Maybe we can think of this year as the year we stash him away in Denver, which might be safer than the stashing players away in europe strategy...

Would you really ask the trio of Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili to play all out on both ends of the floor, then insert a fourth that would just play at one end? Unless JR Smith learns to play defense, then maybe.

JR would play defense if he were here. He'd be a damn sight better than Fin. He knows as well as anyone that the Spurs couldn't have gotten him. They might throw some money his way next year when he's unrestricted if he wants a one year deal.

Albeit it's from Hoopsworld, he should still sit out and demand a trade.

Anything more than asking Denver not to match would damage his reputation, which he needs to rebuild before becoming unrestricted.

What do you think they were doing this year with Finley on the court?

Signing him could cause some problems with minutes, but either way we need one more swingman and i sure as hell would rather it be him than Finley.

Next season... the most the Spurs would be able to give him would still be the MLE but being unrestricted, maybe he takes that and still being only 24 at that stage, he takes it and hopes to earn a bigger deal the next year. Unless he explodes this season in Denver. All a bit of a pipe dream at this point.

Of course the more likely route would be a sign and trade but im not sure what we could give the Nuggets other than pay roll relief.

Well a one year deal may not sound bad, but playing for so many years without any sense of a defensive mind set would not outright change even if he plays for the Spurs. Defensive posturing takes effort, and I just don't feel if JR Smith is really into it.

I like what I saw from him this year in the playoffs. Even though he got torched, he stepped up to the challenge of guarding Kobe because he was pissed.

Oh crap. It'll never happen then.

Hmm..if he was willing to take on Kobe, then he may have it somewhere inside him to try and be defensive. Anyways, Kobe most of the time could torch his guards. Even torched Bowen in the WCF.

Lol, very true. Kobe torches everyone and was unconscious in the first round against the Nuggets. J.R. really did step up and said enough of this bull shit and tried to guard him one on one. They were jawing at each other hard and J.R. did not back down. It was good to see that defensive fire from him. Also, he was scoring like crazy on the other end, had some great offensive games as well. I saw that he had it in him to defend.

If indeed we get him, could he also play the small forward role? Because if Hill pans out, the SG position would be good already, and we only need to address the forward position (although I was hoping for a big forward).

I do not think so, he is only 6-6 or so, and even though he is athletic, it would be tough. George would be a small 2 guard, J.R. would be about the right size. Not sure.

JR Smith is a strongly built 6'6, he could definately play minutes at the 3, but not night in and night out

Even if Smith was ready to sign a MLE offer sheet with Spurs, Nuggets would have match it. All the moves they have made this summer shows that they will keep Smith.

I quite don't like the fact Spurs have used their MLE not using it on Smith was the right choice. Spurs would just have lost one week by doing that.
