Buoyed by a higher turnout and less violence than expected in Sunday's Iraqi elections, Pentagon authorities have decided to start reducing the level of U.S. forces in Iraq next month by about 15,000 troops, down to about 135,000, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D. Wolfowitz said yesterday.

The reduction involves about three brigades of Army soldiers and Marines whose tours were extended last month to bolster security ahead of the elections, and an additional 1,500 airborne soldiers who were rushed to Iraq for a four-month stint.

"I think we'll be able to come down to the level that was projected before this election," Wolfowitz said.

But testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Wolfowitz also warned of "a very difficult road ahead" in defeating Iraqi insurgents and indicated that no further drop in U.S. troops was planned this year. Another senior Pentagon official said after the hearing that the initial decrease did not reflect an improved security situation in Iraq but was simply a recognition that the forces kept specifically for the election were no longer needed and could leave as previously scheduled.

Well, so much for the badgering material from all the right-wing radio pundits who have been continuously pounding Ted Kennedy with over his call recently to withdraw 12,000 troops from Iraq immediately. Of course, Kennedy is a liberal appeaser and Wolfowitz is patriot Republican.

Of course, I'm sure Teddy had no inside information that the withdrawal was going to happen to pathetically try and make himself look better.

It's funny, a month ago you were bitching that we'd never be pulling troops out, now we're gonna, and you're still bitching.

You sure you're not a woman?

(no offense to the women on this board, Dan reminds me of a few bitchy ones I know that seemed like they were on the rag 24-7).

In other words, don't celebrate that there will fewer troops put in harms way in a war so many of you believe is a mistake....start a thread bitching over what some blowhard on a radio program thinks about it?

Funny you brought that up....in between User's cheap 5th of tequila and one of the numerous times he tried to satisfy me tonight we had been talking.....some of you complain tirelessly of all of these partisan talk shows and their content, yet can cite specifics from every damn one of them. If you hate them so much, why do you waste time listening?

I'm glad these men & women are coming home...the sooner the better. Hopefully the Iraqis will be well enough equipped and trained to handle their own security so that the rest of them can come home as soon as possible, too.

:)

Just in case you missed the original crack from Nbadan ... who suggested that User had to turn to alcohol because of the performance anxiety of being with me, the over-sexed, highly experienced horn-dog.

See, the joke loses something when you have to explain it. :fro

Yes, I see... Still, not enough to un-ignore Nbadanallah...his threads are still much better without him.

No worries, cutie....

And, if you're having issues with being over-sexed, there are remedies. ;)
