08 RMR DAY 4: ATLANTA VS. SAN ANTONIO

WOULD ATLANTA'S DOMINANCE CONTINUE?

SALT LAKE CITY (July 22, 2008) –In the first game of day 4 of the Rocky Mountain Revue the San Antonio Spurs (2-1) hosted the undefeated Atlanta Hawks (3-0). The Hawks were without their most productive player of the revue (Othello Hunter 14.3 ppg 6.3 reb) who was out due to an injury. San Antonio quickly took advantage and jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 6:53 remaining in the quarter behind the strong play of rookie Malik Hairston. Anthony Toliver then came in off the bench scoring nine quick points all from long range and the Spurs led 24-18 after one.

Toliver started off the second quarter just where he left off in the first hitting another shot from deep and the Spurs were up by nine. Atlanta’s Acie Law then went to work showing great leadership by taking the ball to the rim repeatedly scoring 8 of his 12 points in the quarter. Behind his play the Hawks were able to cut the Spurs’ lead to two and trailed 41-39 at half.

The third quarter started off with two huge plays for the Hawks. Acie Law drew a foul behind the arc and completed a four point play. Mario West then had a huge follow up dunk and the Hawks found themselves up 47-43 with 6:57 left in the quarter. The Spurs were able to hang in there and by the end of the quarter they had regained the lead 54-52.

The fans were treated more great play to begin the quarter as the Spurs’ James Gist took a pass on the baseline, rose up, threw down a two-handed facial and was fouled.

After a quick rest Acie Law checked back in immediately hit a three and the Hawks were down one 64-63 with 5:47 left in the game. Brian Morrison then stepped up to accept the challenge of Acie Law hitting two three point shots. Acie Law responded with a driving layup, Luke Jackson hit a three and the Hawks led 75-72 with 2:04 remaining.

Following a Spurs basket and a Hawks miss, the Spurs’ Anthony Toliver hit his fifth shot from deep giving his team a 77-75 lead with just over a minute remaining. Both teams continued to battle and Acie Law scored another layup to bring the Hawks to within two points at 81-79 with 31.7 seconds left in the game. Malik Hairston turned the ball over on the inbounds pass. Law attacked the rim, drew the defense and passed the ball to Thomas Gardner who hit a three and put the Hawks up 82-81 with 21.4 remaining. Luke Jackson then fouled the Spurs George Hill with 6.9 seconds left in the quarter. Hill who had struggled all game long (1-7 FG) calmly hit both free throws and the Spurs regained the lead 83-82. Hill then stepped up on the defensive end forcing a jump ball with Acie Law with only 2 seconds left. Hill then slapped the ball to the other end of the court and the Spurs knocked off the undefeated Hawks 83-82.

Acie Law finished the game with 27 points and 4 assists to lead all scorers. The Spurs were led by Anthony Toliver who had 21 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.

Gist with 8 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block.
Hill with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks.
Hairston with 17 points (on 5 for 6 shooting and 7 for 8 from the line), 2 rebounds, and an assist. He played longer than any Spur. Probably the staff giving him one good hard last look before camp begins to see if he warrants a spot.

Spurs finished their summer league with a 5-3 record. It's quite good for a team with so little NBA experience.
Now we will see what will Spurs decides to do with Gist, Hairston, Tolliver and Green.

Green is better than 90% of the training camp players of these past years.
Unless they didn't like the way he plays in SL, he will receive an invite.

The true question is that "will he accept the training camp invite ?"
Training camp invite are usually almost fully non-guaranteed contract. Players rather go overseas where the money is guaranteed. A player like Tolliver should receive some solid offers form Europe. If Spurs want to have him for their training camp, they will have to guarantee a significant part of his salary.

from what i've seen and IMHO Tolliver deserves a better look than Green... i think it ends up in what you said him accepting being part of the camp...

This Spurs summer league team seems to have more legitimate prospects than any other in recent memory.

And it couldn't come at a better time given the other developments (or lack thereof) this summer.:flag:

Both Tolliver and Green started last season in the D-League and went to Europe in February since they were relatively late cuts from their respective training camps. A little guaranteed money could help convince them to do the same thing this season with the Spurs, but might not be necessary if they feel they are close to a call up.

And there's no need to choose between the two. Training camp will have close to 20 players, so they can both be invited.

Agree, Tolliver is deadly accurate both at 3pt line and the free throw line. Amazingly, he's reinvented himself from a center/pf to a shooting sf. He's played also in Europe and seems very comfortable playing the pick and roll.

The Spurs definitely need to include this guy at least in the training camp. I would even go as far as dropping Finley and devellop Tolliver/Gist to play the SF position.

Despite only having 6 points, this is a very solid stat line. 6 rebounds and 3 blocked shots for only being 6' 2"? amazing.

I am more of a defensive guy than an offensive guy......however, I want Tolliver in TC. The Spurs lost cause of lack of offense, as well as defensive rebounding outside of Duncan. I know it is the SL, but Tolliver is en fuego. Plus, playing defense in SL is a lot different than playing when you have Duncan, Bowen, and Manu helping you out.

I am not saying he deserves to be on the team.....just that he has earned the chance to compete for a roster spot in TC. Hill and Gist have also earned a chance.

Our roster could end up looking this way

PG - Parker, Hill, Vaughn
SG - Manu, Mason, Tolliver
SF - Bowen, Udoka, Gist
PF - Duncan, Mahimni, ?
C - Thomas, Oberto, Bonner

I still think we need 1 more big man...sure wish we would have signed Patrick O'Bryant.

Why do people have such reading comprehension problems? Tolliver is 6'9", 250. He's a shooting PF and that' it. Him at shooting guard would be comical.

The only question with Tolliver is that he's got a redundant skill set to Bonner. I wonder if they will let those two battle it out in TC/preseason.

Tolliver wins, they trade Bonner. Bonner wins, they send Tolliver to Austin.

Hairston, Gist, and Tolliver, whom I've never heard of (up until now), have impressed more way more than Hill.

Hill seems he could play good in small ball lineup. He rebounds pretty well for his position. With some work with Chip and luck he may turn into a trip-doub machine.

ChumpDumper

I do think that the Spurs have been reluctant to entertain Bonner trades because no big man besides Horry had his range. If we get two more PFs who can shoot the three, then things might get interesting. Gist and Tolliver have a lot of work to do to make that happen though.

forgive me for not knowing his height and position...i have only seen him play once on that crappy feed from Utah. So I put him at SG....what is the big flippin deal....just say he is a PF not a SG and go about your day. No need for childish insults that could be saved for fans that actually deserve it, like Nones and Mavs fans.....hehehehe

But seeing as Tolliver is not the best defender in the world, I would rather have him at SF than PF and move Gist to PF.....Gist is a better defender, rebounder, and shot blocker....he just seems to be the type of low post energy guy we are desperate for....even if he isn't the tallest guy around.

Besides, even if we sign Tolliver, chances are he ends up in Austin for a while so he can work on his interior game and his defense. Cause if he is here, he will only get garbage minutes, if that.

i like tolliver. with a little polishing, i can see him having a david west like impact on the game with his ability to shoot. good shooters are always at a premium in the league.
