Damn. So basically Europe is offering players loaded contracts that they can't refuse and the NBA can't do anything about it. Stern is really pondering this one over.

Not a huge deal. If Yao is healthy and he should be, the Rockets would be fine at PF. They have Scola and James.

Exactly what is happening. Teams are either restricted by the cap (can only offer MLE) or teams are having trouble dealing with their RFA.

No one gives a shit about refs when you're getting paid like a mofo for playing a shorter season than the NBA season.
That, and if they come back before being gone for two years, they get taxed on it by the IRS.

The only way for the NBA to stop this outflow of talent and then even then it won't make a difference to financially weak clubs is to immediately suspend the LLE/MLE and Salary Cap rules next year. It's too late this year to do anything about it but at least this way, we can let the free market decide. Some of our wealthier club owners can hang on to their players like Paul Allen but others like the guy in Atlanta is screwed. Rockets Les Alexander would be forced to sell the team if he can't keep up. That's good actually. Get an owner with deeper pockets that actually doesn't mind spending the cash.
As far as Scola and Landry..yeah yeah bring it on. If Landry leaves the team and then Scola follows him either this year or next year then we will be totally screwed.

They should make a rule that once you play in the NBA, and you decide to leave to play for a foreign team, you will incur a lifetime ban form playing in the NBA again. That should not include the olympics. That will discorage players from jumping ship. The NBA, despite it's shortcomings, is the best in the world.:hat

The Europeans team choice is too easy
A Player who proved that he can play in the NBA, obviously don´t need to prove anything more, he can play in FIBA or Europe
The famous "Don´t proven anything in the NBA" is going to die, if one player show that he can play in Europe vs Great NBA players, they nor need to prove anything in the NBA before to sign a contract in the NBA

I don't want to say that there's more at work here, but you can't spell "Luis Scola" without CIA. Yao busts his foot, Landry's in talks to go to Spain, and T-Mac "disapears" in the playoffs. Laugh at me now, but by the year's end Rafer Alston will be leading an amphibious assault on Cuba and Mutombo will be installed as the new strong man back in his home country.

Is 25 millions euros ($40 millions) this year. Is crazy how stupid US media is about European sports. If they believe these figures they is even dumber than fans in Rockets board like Sam Fisher.

Those is budgets for 2008 season. For 2009 season Khimki, Dynamo, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos budgets is MUCH higher or maybe fans believe they sign all these players with huge contracts and not increase budget?:rolleyes
TAU add much bigger contract for Splitter, their budget is more not less. Also understand these amounts here is listed based on euro exchange rate to US dollars. Exchange rate is HIGHER now. TAU is 20 millions euros last year = $31 millions when at time this is written. Now 20 millions euros = $32 millions because euro keep going up and dollar keep going down.
CSKA have also increase budget to 40 million euros so is $60 million US for 2009 season. TAU have $32 million budget last season ($32 not $31 because dollar dropped again) and INCREASE budget this year to match same as Barcelona and Real.
Real and Barcelona have 25 million euros budget last year. TAU is increase their budget of 20 million euros last year to 25 million this year to match the budgets of two other big Spanish league clubs. Tiago Splitter get huge contract increase from them already this off season and is equal to 8 times more than Spurs could pay him or is some fans here call Spurs liars when they say this?
For this season Barcelona also increase budget to 30 million euros and is of course added Navarro. Last year 25 million euros is their budget and they not even have Navarro on team.
For LAST SEASON 2008 Euroleague season these were the budgets and dollar drop since then MORE (so these amounts is actually LESS than the real numbers because dollar rate is lower now than was in April) and like say Khimki, Panathinaikos. Olympiacos, TAU, Dynamo, CSKA, Barcelona all INCREASE budgets for 2009 season. So you have to understand these budgets is NOT as high as 2009 ones which is MUCH higher with players like Childress, Garbajosa, Nachbar, Delfino, Navarro and all of them signing and Splitter getting huge contract increase.
Below is a list of team budgets for 2007-2008 season in Europe (in USD).

Tau getting Landry helps them a lot. Killbill said it himself. He watched Landry put down a lot of Amare Stoudamire type dunks last year. The dude can play. He's going to be something barring that there be anything wrong with his knee. However, the Rockets let him play last year during the playoffs so what do you think? Why would they let him do that and then demand that his knee be scoped except to lower his negotiating power.

Each of the 30 NBA teams spent more than any Euroleague team.
And that's just player salaries.
In that article quoting Euro figures:
Your average NBA team has a total yearly budget of around $100 million. This includes salaries and all team expenses.
Below is a list of team budgets for the coming year in Europe (in USD)...
Those Euro numbers quoted include team expenses. Even though they offer net sum contracts to players. Teams still have to pay that players tax. Europe isn't tax free. This reduces further the amount they can use on player salaries.

you are totally right.
the team budgets of the rich European teams are still far below the budgets of any NBA team. yes, they currently pay a few stars big money (for European standards), but even the best teams don't pay their average bench players even close to what the minimum players in the NBA get.
just because it's not possible. forget about all the billionaires talk. there just isn't enough money in European basketball, to close the gap to the NBA. period.
TV money, merchandise money, ticket money and even the often stressed "billionaires money" goes into soccer first, soccer second and soccer third.
it's exactly the difference between the real big money from the real rich men (like Abramovic and Usmanov) and the small big money of Kokkalis and Giannakopoulos (who, btw. isn't even a billionaire, as Kill Bill always tries to make us believe)
it's kind of 3rd class society spectacle, that is offered in European basketball. the who is who sits in the VIP lounges of Chelsea, Barca and Milan and not courtside of an Euroleague game.
btw. all the usually mentioned numbers of player salaries in Europe are a mixture of guessing, rumors and some more or less reliable sources. even the claim, that all mentioned numbers are ALWAYS estimated after taxes is a myth.
so plenty of room for speculations and also for some silly claims about how "rich" the European teams and their owners are. mix it with a huge inferiority complex and you get all the "inside informations" we hear these days.

Wrong this does not include all budget of Euro teams. Every player of PAO gets free care and free house and all bills paid. As a Rocket's fan, I hope Landry stays, but if he gets a good offer he should take it. A player only has so long to play, and should maximize his earning potential. He can play overseas for a couple of years, we would still hold his rights if he comes back to the NBA.

Carlos Delfino has a new/old teammate!
July 25, 2008
After Carlos Delfino signed a nice contract with Eurocup team BC Khimki, it looks like the Khimki managers wanted more from the Raptors than “just” Delfino.
A few hours ago, the club and the Eurocup website announced that Jorge Garbajosa has signed a two-year contract with Russian club BC Khimki.
It also looks like another American player is leaving his home country: Carl Landry from the Houston Rockets is rumored to be signing with Spanish club Tau Ceramica - We will keep you updated.

You are one stupid MF. I went all the way to Europe to create that news report on a Website from Europe. How old are you anyways? I can't say whether that news report is real or not but I suspect so.
Besides...I fully expect Landry to say buh bye to the Rockets after the way he's been treated.
Everything will come out in the next week or so. Until then keep believing what you want to believe. This is an internet bulletin board. People post for fun and for the exchange of ideas and information. If someone wants to play a big gigantic prank that would be beyond the capabilities of myself to be in two places at the same time, then let them. Maybe a magic Genie popped two of us on different sides of the globe. If anyone wants me to give a ping to show I am in Houston that's fine with me. Let the proof be in the realtime data.

What is the problem with waiting on the Mods to see if you guys posted from the same IP addy?
Which is in the log....not tonight but EVER....if at any time you posted from the same IP....it will be there.....all the Mods have to do is look at your account and what IP addy's you have posted from and do the same for Kill Bill and if any match.....BOYAKASHA !!!

So, what are ticket prices over there? If there's only 40 games compared to 82, where is all this revenue going to come from? I'm just guessing, but it looks like a lot of these teams' budgets would have to double to keep up with these contracts. Has basketball become that popular that they're able to withstand the increase in salaries? I see a bubble bursting in the near future and some of these players that took the money getting the shaft.

author: Patryk Kurkowski, 2008-07-25, 11:38, : inf. by Patrick Kurkowski, 2008-07-25, 11:38, the source: Some guy with (try not to laugh) Polish media credentials, producer and director: Patrick Kurkowski, filmed in Kurkowskiscope
The 25 year old American played in 48 games for the Rockets, which is the equivalent of an entire season, plus playoffs in the Euro leagues. Landry averaged 8 points and 5 rebounds per game, but in the playoffs those numbers fell to 5.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Despite those less than impressive statistics, and the fact that he has only one season of NBA experience, Tau has allegedly offered upwards of $15 Million over two seasons in an attempt to entice him to move to a place where women have hairy armpits, and deodorant is optional. There are rumors that the owner of the team is so pissed about his former star, Luis Scola, playing for Houston that he has vowed to take one of their players, "No matter what the fuck it costs."
The good news for Tau fans is that 8 points in the NBA should translate to around 20 ppg in the Euro league. Should Landry fail to live up to that expectation, his contract may be terminated early by a group of Basque terrorists. As the owner of the team says, "I provide the villa... I know where he fucking lives."
Landry is 6'9", 245 lbs. and will play the position of "powerful wing", which is yet another Euro invention, to try and make it look as if they actually created the damn game. For more information about the players on Tau Ceramica, follow this hyperlink http://www.euroleague.net/euroleague/search?clubcode=bas&searchstring=Tau%20Ceramica and look under "Roasters". You might think that a team capable of paying $15 million for Carl Landry could afford to actually hire someone to translate the word "roster" into English and spell it right... but you would be mistaken.

This was my original point. If the idea is to eventually make money from the basketball teams, then this is not a tenable direction for the European Leagues.
On the other hand, they may just be interested in creating a splash, willing to write off the losses against their other revenues, and gamble that eventually there will be a big TV payoff at the end.
