Jim D. Adkisson Charged In Tennessee Church Shooting That Killed 2 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/28/jim-d-adkisson-charged-in_n_115281.html)
DUNCAN MANSFIELD | July 28, 2008 03:11 PM EST | AP

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — An unemployed man accused of opening fire with a shotgun and killing two people at a Unitarian Universalist church apparently targeted the congregation out of hatred for its support of liberal social policies, police said Monday.

Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen IV said a signed, four-page letter written by Jim D. Adkisson, 58, was found in his small SUV in the church parking lot. The gunfire punctuated a children's performance based on the musical "Annie" Sunday, killing two and wounding seven.

"It appears that what brought him to this horrible event was his lack of being able to obtain a job, his frustration over that and his stated hatred of the liberal movement," Owen said at a news conference.

No children were hurt, but five people remained in serious or critical condition Monday. A burly usher who died was hailed as a hero for shielding others from gunfire at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church. Witnesses said some of the church members wrestled the suspect to the ground after he pulled a shotgun from a guitar case and fired three times.

Adkisson, who is charged with one count of first-degree murder, remained jailed Monday under "close observation" on $1 million bail, authorities said. More charges were expected.

Court records from neighboring Anderson County indicate Adkisson threatened violence against his spouse several years ago. In March 2000 his then-wife, Liza Alexander, obtained an order of protection against him after telling a judge that Adkisson had threatened "to blow my brains out and then blow his own brains out."

The woman's written request for protection, reviewed by The Associated Press, said she was "in fear for my life and what he might do."

The Unitarian-Universalist church promotes progressive social work, including advocacy of women and gay rights. The Knoxville congregation also has provided sanctuary for political refugees, fed the homeless and founded a chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, according to its Web site.

Owen said the letter indicated Adkisson, who neighbors said had previously worked as a truck driver, did not expect to leave the church alive. He added the man reported having no family or next-of-kin.

"He certainly intended to take a lot of casualties," Owen said. "He had 76 rounds with him."

Police said Adkisson carried a 12-gauge semiautomatic shotgun into the church in a guitar case, but it appeared no specific person was targeted. A search of his house also turned up a .38-caliber handgun, Owen added.

Owen said authorities believe the suspect had gone to the Unitarian church because of "some publicity in the recent past regarding its liberal stance on things."

Unitarians have roots in a movement that rejected Puritan orthodoxy in New England. Although individual Unitarian churches can vary dramatically in outlooks, most congregations retain a deep commitment to social justice, which has led many to embrace liberal stances on the ordination of women, civil rights and gay rights.

Adkisson lived in a surburb north of Knoxville, about a 20 minutes' drive from the Unitarian church in an established neighborhood of older homes and several other houses of worship.

The police chief said the shotgun was bought at a pawn shop about a month ago and Adkisson wrote the letter in the last week or so. But he added: "I am sure this is something that has been building a long time in terms of his anger."

He said the state recently sent a letter to Adkisson telling him food stamps he had been receiving would be reduced or eliminated.

Investigators were reviewing several video recordings of the performance by parents and church members. Owen said police would not release the videos nor Adkisson's letter until they have been entered into evidence.

The shooting started as about 200 people watched a show put on by 25 children.

Church member Mark Harmon said he was in the first row when he heard "an incredibly loud bang." He thought the noise was part of the play, then he heard another bang and saw a woman bleeding as he dove for cover.

"It seems so unreal," Harmon said.

Church members praised Greg McKendry, 60, saying he attempted to block the gunfire. Barbara Kemper said that McKendry, who died, "stood in the front of the gunman and took the blast to protect the rest of us."

Kemper said the gunman shouted before he opened fire, though police said others didn't recall him saying anything.

"It was hateful words. He was saying hateful things," she said, refusing to elaborate.

"Greg McKendry was a very large gentleman, one of those people you might describe as a refrigerator with a head," said church member Schera Chadwick. "He looked like a football player. He did obviously stand up and put himself in between the shooter and the congregation."

A second victim who died hours later was identified as Linda Kraeger, 61.

Officials said Adkisson was arraigned Sunday night and faces his next court hearing Aug. 5.

The shooting follows a December 2007 spree in which a man shot four staff members at a missionary training center near Denver, Colo., killing two, after being told he couldn't spend the night. About 12 hours later and 65 miles away in Colorado Springs, police say the 24-year-old man fatally shot a parishioner at a megachurch and wounded four others before killing himself.

......Knoxville Police Department Officer Steve Still requested the search warrant after interviewing Adkisson. who was subdued by several church members after firing three rounds from a 12-gauge shotgun into the congregation.

Adkisson targeted the church, Still wrote in the document obtained by WBIR-TV, Channel 10, "because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country's hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of media outlets."

Adkisson told Still that "he could not get to the leaders of the liberal movement that he would then target those that had voted them in to office."

Adkisson told officers he left the house unlocked for them because "he expected to be killed during the assault."

Inside the house, officers found "Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder" by radio talk show host Michael Savage, "Let Freedom Ring" by talk show host Sean Hannity, and "The O'Reilly Factor," by television talk show host Bill O'Reilly.

The shotgun-wielding suspect in Sunday's mass shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church was motivated by a hatred of "the liberal movement," and he planned to shoot until police shot him, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling P. Owen IV said this morning.

Adkisson, 58, of Powell wrote a four-page letter in which he stated his "hatred of the liberal movement," Owen said. "Liberals in general, as well as gays."

Adkisson said he also was frustrated about not being able to obtain a job, Owen said.

The letter, recovered from Adkisson's black 2004 Ford Escape, which was parked in the church's parking lot at 2931 Kingston Pike, indicates he had been planning the shooting for about a week......

Talk radio is dominated by right-wing slime, slanderous, racist, lying, inflammatory, angry, polarizing, divisive, hate radio. These people and their listeners are so jaded and bored by life in general that don't feel like they are alive unless they are masturbating to anger and hate towards everybody and everything outside of their group.

Look there has been violence from both sides of the political spectrum I don't dispute that. Boutons is correct in his assessment of the right wing radio.

It poisons the discourse with veiled racism, hate and outright contempt for any who disagree with their world view.

I do contend that violence from a political orgin that occurs from domestic sources has overwhelmingly came from the right.

Abortion clinic bombings, Oklahoma City, judges being killed for their rulings, among others; I guess I could dig deep and find something but what have liberals done in our recent history (1980-on)?

Conservative radio thrives on a victim mentality. Someone, liberals, Democrats, Muslims, the French, unions, civil rights activists, you name it is taking something away from conservatives whether it be opportunity, money or a job.

The right wing talkers kick it up the next level then saying they (liberals) want power and your freedom or your guns. They produce books filled with more hate and distortions.

They are a useful tool for the moneyed interests that own the radio stations and media that showcase them. There is not a conspiracy in the sense that Clear Channel and Limbaugh et al get their talking points from their masters and go spew it on the radio, Clear Channel hires those that help their point of view gain power. The ratings are important too but if say Joe Pags ratings dip, he will be canned and his replacement will be another person with the same political viewpoint with the a different style of delivery.

I got sidetracked with the talk radio thing but I stand by my comment; most political violence in this country comes from the right and I predict there will be a marked increase during an Obama administration.

At least with the FISA changes thanks to the Bush administration, Obama will be free to spy on these guys. You reap what you sow righties.

If someone could point out a moderate, reserved radio program that allows people to genuinely disagree with each other and make actual positions of discourse to operate from (as opposed to letting them speak 2-3 sentences and hanging up on them), I'd be all ears.

"on both sides of the political spectrum."

"I'm mad as hell and I'm going to take it out on everybody forever."

Please cite the left-wing hate and slime radio/tv talkers.

Jesus, boutons. You should get a radio gig with that rant.

Nah, I never said it was important. I don't understand why you have to make things up all the time.

Usually high profile killings get extensive coverage from the 24-hour news channels. I thought it would be interesting if anyone at Fox addressed it. As far as I have looked -- which isn't very far -- there is no mention of it whatsoever, even though there are stories about the killer's motivations.

It's just a side note about coverage. I imagine MSNBC would probably do the same if the killer had Chris Matthews' book heavily highlighted on his nightstand. But now you've made this about petty insults and some wierd fetish you have for me.

Congratulations.

By the time help arrived, Luis Ramirez lay convulsing in the middle of the street, foam running from his mouth.

Blows had struck the 25-year-old Mexican immigrant with such force that they left a clotted, bruised impression of Jesus Christ on the skin of his chest from the religious medal he wore.

His attackers were white teenagers, including star students and football players, witnesses told police.

After a night of drinking, the teens taunted the undocumented worker with racial epithets, pummeled him to the group

Goebbels and Nazi propaganda outlets didn't directly advocate killing until later on in the Reich. Serb TV during the Bosnian war and hate radio in Rwanda managed to demonize the enemy and inspire genocide. Propaganda doesn't have to hit people over the head to motivate them to commit violence

Rush and hannity colmes never tell their listeners to kill people much less hurt them.

Neo-nazi movers and shakers never tell their followers to kill people either. They know better than to cross that line.

They just go on and on and on about how "them ######s is takin' over and destroyin' the white race."

Insert the word "liberal" for "######" and "our country" for "white race" and you have a summary of just about any Ann Coulter/Hannity/etc rant.

Hate filled invective is hate-filled invective, and you can split hairs about it all you like, but it is simple common sense that when you have someone predisposed to violence like this guy seems to have been, and expose them to the kinds of shit that right-wing radio spews night and day, sooner or later one or two of them will act on it.

The difference between the Neo-Nazis and Hannity is a slim one. The Neo-nazis hope their violent followers will act on the unspoken message and spark a race war. Hannity et al. obviously don't wish for any similar left/right killing.

That said, it begs a leap of faith to think that decades of one-sided hateful rants won't have a similar effect in the future.

I think Stout may have a point about the future.
