We recently took a three-week vacation to my parent's place in the Middle of Nowhere, MI. No cable, no high-speed internet, no X-Box. My kids read every day. They swam in the lake, took walks in the woods, entertained themselves with whatever toys they could find... it was great for them. Not so much for the adults :lol
We realized how much time our kids really spend in front of the tv. I kick 'em off several times a day ("Go read a book or play with your toys. Look, we have playdough!"), but it's still a lot of cartoon watching. It's better for the adults too. We always make plans to do something on Saturday, then get caught up in some rerun marathon of a show we only half like anyway and end up on our butts all day. We're a family of couch potatoes.
Getting rid of tv is good for you, but it's gonna feel awful for a while!
