Hi guys I don't watch baseball much and I need a team. I thought the Pirates would be cool because I liked Peter Pan when I was a little boy, and there were pirates in that movie. I watched a Rangers and Yankees game the other day. The Yankees lost so that was cool, but the Rangers won and that was not cool. I know I'm from Texas but I hate on pretty much any Texas team that's not the Spurs. I think the Rangers are gay, because the Power Rangers are gay and I now think anything with the term "ranger" is gay. I would say I hate the Astros the least out of any Texas sports team, but that's just because they suck and I mean when you suck that bad it's hard to hate.

But I seen the Dodgers and that Manny Ramirez guy a lot on SportsCenter lately and they seem cool. I always wanted to go to LA too, just cuz I figured there are better drugs in LA than in central Texas. Anyway what do I need to do to be initiated into Dodgers fanclub?

April, great
May, OK
June, terrible
July, OK
August, OK

April and June cancel each other out, leaving only three average months. Problem is, and yes, I'm taking into account their injuries, this team shouldn't be average. Not with it's starting pitching. Not with it's bullpen. The offense should be progressing, but the only three doing are Jackson, Drew and Reynolds, and the latter two are still wildly inconsistent. Young has regressed. It's been a practically wasted year of Upton. Tracy is so-so. And the remaining youngsters never got the chance or seized the opportunity when it was given.

Dodgers should easily blow past them in the coming weeks.

I guess the good news for my take is Manny is not cutting his hair and Torre has let it go. If Torre is so gung hoe on his players having short hair Manny will not be there next year.

Torre has not done shit in 8 years and I can't remeber the last times the Dodgers have done shit, they may want to let go the "how to groom" rules. L.A. is a huge market and there is no NFL teams to compete with. Don't let a dress code that the MLB does not endorse prevent you from getting good players.

We are talking about a player who has played in the league for over 15 years, 8 years with Boston wearing the same do that won him 2 World Series and not one time durning this guys carrer has anyone talk about his hair length.

please. you know you wish u had manny in your outfield. hes perhaps the most clutch hitter in baseball today. he makes other batters better just by being in the lineup. Kent is batting 14-30 since batting in front of manny. this after batting .250 all season. coincidence? i think not. Matt Kemp and Either's avg's have climbed as well as martin and blake's.

only advantage the Dbacks have on the dodgers is starting pitching. Webb and Haren are lights out so thats pretty scary but billingsley is not bad himself. he ranks amongs the best in ERA and SO's. Bullpen for Dbacks suck balls and in contrast the Dodgers have maybe the best bullpen tahts only going to get better with the return of saito.

true. but look at the world series last year. the rockies hit their stride in sept and made it to the fall classic. year before the cardinals and tigers both barely had good enought records to get to the post season and they were the last 2 teams standing. its all about momentum and at this time the dodgers have won 10 outta 11. pretty good IMO

Statistically, LA is
4-4 vs Phillies
3-3 vs Mets
4-2 vs Brewers
2-5 vs Cubs

So unless they face the Cubs (which could happen if Brewers continue their free fall), I really think the Dodgers will win a game, maybe even steal the series. Let's not forget the Dodgers boast an NL best 3.65 Team ERA.

I agree that they (NL West winner) will probably win at least one game. However, if you believe in projections by run differential, it is actually more likely that either Arizona or Los Angeles would be swept out of the playoffs than make the World Series.

Unless you consider Arizona "still in contention," which I really don't, then LA has the worst run differential of any of the playoff teams. To be fair, they might pass Milwaukee by the end of the season. They aren't even close to Chicago, New York, or Philadelphia.

On paper, the LA pitching staff is more dangerous in a short series than either Philadelphia's or New York's. This is definitely in LA's favor. My concern for LA is that no one will have to pitch to Manny Ramirez unless they really want to for some unknown reason.

So we're close to the Brewers, but not even close to the Phils, yet they have the same record? interesting.

Reggie Miller

So we're close to the Brewers, but not even close to the Phils, yet they have the same record? interesting.

Projections of future records are made by run differential. What a team will do in the remaining schedule is better predicted by this figure than their actual record.

Example: the Pythagorean Projection has a team at 81-81. On Day 142 of the season, this hypothetical team has 71-71, having had long losing and winning streaks. The hypothetical team has been on a winning streak to raise their record to 71-71. Odds are, they will play .500 baseball for the rest of the season, rather than continuing their "hot streak."

Run differentials as of today:

Chicago Cubs + 187
Philadelphia Phillies + 107
New York Mets + 84
Milwaukee Brewers + 52
LA Dodgers + 45
Arizona Diamondbacks + 7

Statistically, the Brewers and Phillies should not have identical records, particularly since the Brewers play in a tougher division. (That last point is debatable.) The Phillies should be better, which is somewhat indicated by the fact that Philadelphia beat the snot out of Milwaukee four games in a row.

Since run differential is used to predict future outcomes, this suggests that Milwaukee will continue to lose most of their remaining games, while Philadelphia will continue to win most of theirs.

I'm not saying that the metric is infallible. (It isn't.) I am saying that this metric doesn't give LA much of a chance. (It doesn't.)
