Looks like the Spurs are again gaming the draft system.

In previous years they drafted European players that gave them the flexibility of keeping their rights without occupying a roster spot and taking up salary cap.

Now, they've negotiated with European teams to give their 2nd round draft picks playing time.

Gist will play for Angelico Biella. Trent Plaisted (rights own by Detroit) will also play for the Italian team.

I guess you can look at it however you want...whatever makes you feel better.

Nice to see the spurs gaming the system with splitter.

Not my opinion, it's reality.

The Spurs will keep 1 to 2 slots open for either callups or signing players who are waived. They've done ever since the rule change. If you do this, then as it stands the roster is completely booked:

Thomas/Oberto/Mahinmi
Duncan/Bonner/Tolliver
Bowen/Udoka/Finley(?)
Ginobli/Mason
Parker/Vaughn

Where does Hill and Gist sit in this roster? They can't be both taking up a roster spot and playing in the D-league. Therefore one of them has to go to Europe!

Also note: Vaughn and Finley are inelligble to play in the D-league.

If this move was actually planned by the Spurs, it seems risky. This strategy was sensible in the past, but not anymore. If Gist plays well, he'll be on the radar of dozens of euroleague teams. I wonder why they wouldn't even want him to play in preseason camp to see how he performs against Bowen, Udoka, Bonner, Mahinmi, etc.? Strange...

More like Spurs getting owned again. ce should hang out with Tpark, their collective homervision would make them a great couple.

When there are competing leagues and teams with money to spend, it is the PLAYERS who can game the system.

There's already a long thread talking about the Gist situation. You didn't need to open a new thread just to voice your thoughts about the effects.

Thanks.
