The best one was the HOT chick who was in front of the senate committee.

Well the *best* commercial was the one with the troops in the airport.

As for humor, the Budweiser one with all the animals (see what you started) was good, as were the monkey ones for careerbuilder.

The Super Bowl is the most-watched television event of each year. As many as 150 million people are expected to tune in at some point to today's NFL title game, pitting the reigning champion New England Patriots against the Philadelphia Eagles. Advertising time is selling for a record $2.4 million per 30-second spot.

This year's Super Bowl broadcast will include ads from Pizza Hut, Subway, Volvo, CareerBuilder, Pepsi, FedEx and Cialis, among others. One of Busch's ads features comedian Cedric the Entertainer talking about responsible drinking and designated drivers. Napster, the groundbreaking peer-to-peer file-sharing service shut down in 2001 for allowing users to trade digital music for free and reborn as a legal business in 2003, will have an ad.

There will be at least six commercials for upcoming movies, including Paramount's remake of "War of the Worlds." Unilever, makers of Degree antiperspirant, will spoof old G.I. Joe commercials by using action figures in its ad. And in the now-you-know-where-they-are category, a Frito-Lay commercial will feature baggy-panted '80s rap icon M.C. Hammer.

Last year’s Super Bowl left a lasting impression. So much so, the Federal Communications Commission ruled the half time show indecent and fined CBS. One part of the event that didn’t leave a lasting impression was the commercials.

But people are still watching. Some 145 million people are expected to tune in to watch Super Bowl XXXIX. A retail industry group says a quarter of them tune in to just watch the ads. Ads that cost companies as much as $2.4 million.

“It's going to be very tame. Probably tamer than is necessary. Probably, I would say, preposterously tame,” said Bob Garfield of Advertising Age.

Sunday’s lineup includes some veterans. Visa is back.

“Our format this year and our advertising is very all American,” Suzanne Lyons of Visa said.

One new comer is Web domain sales company godaddy.com

“We found that there were a lot of people that didn't know who we were, and we believe if they know who we are they'll do business with us,” godaddy.com Chairman and CEO Bob Parsons said.

The government proposed fining CBS-owned stations a total of $550,000 for last year's halftime show, but that was only the start. By the end of the year, the FCC had levied nearly $4 million in indecency fines for a variety of shows. Congress worked to raise fines even higher.

Choosing a British knight for the entertainment is only one of several ways this year's Super Bowl is striving to be more G-rated than last year's. Advertisers such as Anheuser-Busch Inc., criticized last year for ads some considered crude, have promised to throttle it back for today's game. Erectile-dysfunction drug Cialis will hold its commercial late in the third quarter, airing well after 9 p.m. And the NFL, embarrassed by last year's debacle, took back control of the game's entertainment, which it ceded to MTV last year. The league even scrutinized every lyric in Paul McCartney's song list.

Last year, the FCC — charged with policing the radio and television airwaves for violations of its decency rules — received 1.07 million complaints about 314 radio and television programs. It got more than 500,000 complaints about the halftime show of last year's Super Bowl.

To put this number in context, in 2003, the agency received 202,032 complaints about 375 programs.

In response, lawmakers in both houses of Congress have introduced bills that would raise the maximum indecency fine from $32,500, up to $500,000 in one version.

the godaddy.com one was awesome then the nfl pulled the 2nd ad. douchebags (http://www.webdesigntalk.net/showthread.php?p=447014#post447014)

As you may have noticed our Super Bowl ad only appeared during the scheduled first quarter spot. It was scheduled to run also in the second ad position during the final two minute warning. Our ad never ran a second time. Instead, in its place, we saw an advertisement promoting "The Simpsons."

The NFL persuaded FOX to pull our ad.
We immediately contacted Fox to find out what happened. Here's what we were told: After our first ad was aired, the NFL became upset and they, together with Fox, decided to pull the ad from running a second time. Because we purchased two spots, we were also entitled to a "Brought to you by GoDaddy.com" 5 second marquis spot. They also chose to pull the marquis spot.

...
I'm sure you'll be hearing more about this over the next few days. I believe that it's the first time ever a decision was made to pull an ad after it had already been run once during the same broadcast.

Clandestino

How many times have you seen troops being applauded at the airport? How many times have you seen a large group of them flying commercial? You DO know it was a beer commercial don't you?

tbong,

I come from a military family. Troops, especially those getting leave from Iraq/Afghanistan, often fly home commercial. It's usually cheaper for the government to fly them home, versus trying to find room on cargo planes in the space A (available) seating that is few and far between (not to mention no guarantee of a set leave time).

It happens all the time, sorry it's lost on you. My sister went through a similar experience coming home from Kosovo on leave, there was about 12 troops coming home. Some folks in 1st class even gave up their seats for them.

Good sentiment though.

Aggie Hoopsfan

I don't think it was "hijacked." They threw up their logo at the end.

Personally I'm glad they did. I'm not gonna run out and buy their beer because of it. I think if they hadn't put their logo at the end, then probably one of the biggest water cooler topics would have been "who made that ad?"

Hell, they dropped 2.4 million for the ad, I got no problem with them flashing their logo for one second at the end.

MannyIsGod

Compared to a lot of things you see, I thought it was pretty tame.

Personally it just made me want to change to channel, and I'm not sure that's what a good commercial should do...but being a female sports fan, it's just something you have to suffer through. IMO, if you're going to spend that much for a spot, you should make it a little more oriented to both sexes...there's a lot of female fans these days.

Besides, we get to see a lot more butts in shiny tight pants than ya'll get shots of cheerleaders. :lol

Did yall see the one with Mike Ditka and Dennis Rodman? For countertops?? My uncle did that one. He owns his own Ad company in houston and got his first superbowl commercial. He said he had some really good ideas, but the pretty much got nixed because of them being afraid of the FCC. (gotta admit, it was kind of disappointing, knowing how funny my uncle is)

timvp
02-07-2005, 10:52 PM
Yeah, I didn't get that one at all. It looked like two different commercials.

I'm not sure if it's an old commercial but I like that Cedric the Entertainer one where he said his fantasy was having two girls and bud light on a deserted island ... but then realized bar-b-q and a dog was the way to go.

man fuck the fcc they bust our balls even at the sight of micha...er, janet jackson's titty as if a 12 year old with a modem hasn't seen worse than that already.

seriously, this country lives in a fiction. on the boob tube we cant have boobs distract us while we are taking a look on our laptop at the pureportugesepussy.com link our cousin frank sent us.

thats what we get for a country that caters to the whims of white suburban mothers of two in their late 30s/early 40s who drive suvs and cut us off on the highway as they chatter about their next junior league event with some of their girlfriends. we get a country that doesnt make as much money as it should, spends more money than it should on credit without any regard to when it has to be paid back, and a desire to kill the terrorist boogeyman at all costs.
