In the end of it all it seems positive.
PF Robert Horry replaced by Kurt Thomas
SG Brent Barry replaced by George Mason
PG Damon Stoudamire replaced by committee
PF Ian Mahinmi to NBA level
G George Hill (NBDL)
SF Tolliver (NBDL or cut
We are a little younger, a little less likely to get injured and a little more physical. It still seems like we will need to address the back up point guard position but the rest of the roster looks like it can make a run at another title.
Duncan will enjoy having Thomas around for a full year. Thomas should be better now that he has had some time to digest the system. Mahinmi will provide energy and fouls. As he soaks up the foul calls it will limit the ticky tack calls on Thomas and Duncan. Oberto will be around to do his thing, as well. Bonner will play mop up minutes. May get time against slower teams. He has to hit his shots since that is all he can really do.
Bowen will share more time with Udoka. Bowen will still play the fast SF's while Udoka will play the physical types.
Ginobili should be fresh come playoff time with Mason and Finley provided minutes during the season. Mason could be the steal of free agency. When he plays his numbers are comparable to any other star SG.
Parker will be Parker. It would be nice if he could up his apg numbers 1-2 per game. Vaughn will play hard, but may give way to Mason when some offense is needed.
Hill will spend the year in NBDL along with Tolliver unless Tolliver gets cut. Hairston and Ahearn will not make the team.
There still seems to be one more tweak needed for an experienced backup point guard that can score. The most likely trade candidate would be Bonner.
Players to sign or trade include Sam Cassell, Devin Brown,Delonte West, Juan Dixon, Shaun Livingston, Smush Parker, Darnell Armstrong, Chris Quinn, Damon Stoudamire, Tony Allen, Willie Green, Jarrett Jack or Tinsley if he gets bought out, Charlie Bell and Steve Francis.
Greatest potential: Shaun Livingston but Spurs won't bite.
Cassell won't get the chance after Van Exel, and Stoudamire.
Most likely; Devin Brown or Juan Dixon.
West is not as good as he thinks.
Allen, Jack or Bell would be great.
The rest is a waste.
The final result we be the Spurs will wait and see how Mason can do in limited point minutes when offense is needed from the position.
