Ginobili Injured In Olympics Semifinals

POSTED: 11:19 am CDT August 22, 2008
UPDATED: 11:35 am CDT August 22, 2008

SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili was injured Friday during the Olympic semifinal game against the United States.

Ginobili, playing for Team Argentina, injured the same ankle that bothered him in the NBA playoffs during the first quarter.

He didn't return to the game. It was not clear how severe the injury was.

Spurs officials had urged Ginobili to pass on the Olympics and rest the ankle, but he refused, saying it ankle felt fine.

Team USA defeated Argentina 101-81 to advance to the gold medal game against Spain on Sunday.

Olympics are over for injured basketball star Ginobili
22.08.08 22:14

(dpa) - Argentine basketball star Emanuel Ginobili is injured and will miss Sunday's game for Olympic bronze against Lithuania, Argentine team doctor Diego Grippo confirmed Friday.

"There is no chance that 'Manu' will recover. He will not play against Lithuania," Grippo said.

A recurring injury to his left ankle forced Ginobili to remain on the bench for most of Friday's semi-final, which saw defending champion Argentina lose to the United States, 101-81.

"Ginobili is in a lot of pain, he is very sad," Argentine coach Sergio Hernandez said.

The San Antonio Spurs shooting guard was on court for just 6 minutes and 21 seconds in the semi-final and scored 2 points before withdrawing at half-time.

Andres Nocioni may also miss the game against Lithuania.

"He has tendinitis in his left knee. We will see if he recovers," said Grippo.

Let the tanking begin.

Yeah, he was driving and LeBron stepped in front of him as he was passing and Manu landed off balance. It was not really anything unusual so it is a concern that his ankle is going to hold up under the rigors of normal play...until he has properly healed the ankle.

Shitty news to wake up to. I hope he'll be ok and be ready for when the season starts.

It's not going to be pretty to have to lean on Mason, Udoka, and Finley to carry the load should he miss some time this season with the ankle.

timvp

Ginobili shouldn't be playing if a slight tweak of the ankle sends him to the locker room.

Chances are the Spurs will have to rest him throughout training camp and preseason to make sure he's healthy. An ankle doesn't heal all the way unless you get a whole lot of rest.

Well unlike the Wade, if Gino takes time off, they do not get a number 2 draft pick. They will still win more than 20 or so games.

They'll get him on a therapy program once he's back. He'll be ready before the regular season; I think the main concern is that this is a chronic ankle issue that will progressively hurt his mobility.

Right, timvp. Thus, the reason for my question. Most of us have posed the question, what happens if Manu gets hurt? That is why the Spurs needed to bolster their scoring and wing position. Even if Manu didn't get hurt, he is cutting and moving on the ankle in a competitive situation.

This could set him back for months.

However if there is a bright side to all this, Manu was going to need the rest anyway, seeing as how he virtually has had no offseason. He'll now be forced to concentrate only on rehabbing his ankle, which will keep him out of competition until he's healed.

What a tragedy. Just yesterday, i was thinking that Ginobili was going to be in great shape for the start of the Spurs' season after playing so well in the olympics.
I'm sure he is feeling like shit because the Spurs advised him not to play and because he will be in Pop's doghouse for months.
i hope the Spurs can make some trade(s) to improve their prospects for the upcoming season.

No. You completely missed the point of the original post. Yes, this fucks up the Spurs' plans. I recognize that. Yes, they pay him millions. But will you just forget about the money first, and think how Manu must feel at the moment? He's human. If anyone feels disappointment, guilt, whatever, it's him. Both of us are sitting in front of a computer passing judgment, he has to suffer all the shit.

Then again, I wouldn't expect someone who thinks we should be loyal to money, to understand.

Stupid me, I thought professional sports was a business. Manu made a decision with his heart, good for him, I applaud that. He knew the risk, was advised against taking that risk and now looks like a total imbecile. The Spurs now need to make a decision with their brains and their wallets.

I had a serious ankle injury in college playing football. Although it was nominally OK after therapy and didn't require surgery, it was a recurring 'weak link' for years.

Sometimes the weakness would pop up unexpectedly, and I could virtually trip over nothing--like the flowers in my Grandma's living room rug.

The Spurs took the risk of signing him, they knew he was going to play on the national team, it is a business, they made a business decision that he was worth the risk,

We in Houston, have Yao and Scola playing....again, our organization took the risk, they knew what they are doing.

It is unfortunate if Manu is seriously injured, but if it is just some more inflammation, he will be fine with some rest, and he has plenty of time to rest.

Clearly you can see USA had beaten Argentina but not Manu. And with their All-Star line the led went down to just 6 pts? That was no revenge. Hey I notice that odd smile faded on Melo's face after that :lol that was scary:D.

The Spurs got just what they deserved. They sat around all off season and refused to get younger. They chose to gamble their future on an over 30 Duncan and banged up over 30 Ginobli along with a slow, over 30 Oberto in the middle.

At this point in his career Ginobli is a 20-25 minute a game man. They needed to go out and get a legit starting SG. But instead they resign Finley.

He is 30 as well as Bowen, Ginobli, Oberto and Finley. Duncan needs help, he can't go out there and put up 30 & 15 any more. We needed to get younger and more athletic. Yet we wanted to keep it Jurrasic Park. Cant blame Ginobli when all along we knew that he was breaking down. We needed a legit starter at 2Guard and Finley aint it

The free agents the Spurs chose to go after signing elsewhere =/= the Spurs choosing to keep it "Jurrasic Park".

Sheesh, the influx of ignorance this summer has been worse than most.

When I saw Manu went down and didn't return in the 2nd half I was not interested to watch the entire game anymore.
I knew they had no chance but a Spur now with the ankle injury? that was so devastating for me. With our new recruits, I was looking forward to a BIG start for the 2008-09 season. But that was what you wanted to see, right? Beat Manu! Beat Manu!

Clearly you can see USA had beaten Argentina but not Manu. And with their All-Star line the led went down to just 6 pts? That was no revenge. Hey I notice that odd smile faded on Melo's face after that :lol that was scary:D.

Okay despite Kobe's bestselling jersey in China you can still hear the loud boos in the arena. I was surprised. The whole world is not behind you afterall.

SO ARE YOU HAPPY NOW AMERICA?

I was expecting Argentina to defend its title. Until Manu was downed. But still they have superb 1st half game with Scola and bench taking control.

It would have taken divine intervention for Argentina to beat the US team, even with Manu Ginobili playing.

Manu makes only 9 m a year, that's a lot lower than even some role players. You under pay him, you cant complain about him being injured, get over it.

Are you kidding me? Are you really that stupid? Give me the names of all the $9-10MM role players. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Manu's stength became his weakness. His burning desire to play in the Olympics was more important to him than his long term health.

The pressure of his country's wishes meant more to him than getting 100%healthy.

I love it when the Argies call Spurs fans selfish for worrying about the ramifications of this injury on the coming NBA season. And yet, the Argentine Olympic "Powers that be" pick an injured athlete to carry the opening ceremony flag in a not so subtle way of pressuring him into playing. How is that NOT selfish as well?

This Olympic experience will have a long term effect on Ginobili's basketball career. That's unfortunate.

wouldn't listen to pop nooooo had to go and play in the fucking olympics :pctoss

The guy was under intense pressure from his countrymen to play.

I am not so sure he really had that much of a choice, it is expected in Argentina that he would and should play, if he didn't play he would have been under heavy criticism there.

Very tough break, sorry to see it.

I'm sure this has been posted somewhere already, but he had a severe ankle sprain his rookie year, didn't play for the first part of the season, then went on to win a championship. Yes, I realize that he was younger then, but he's still an athlete in better condition than most.

Weren't people wanting him to get limited minutes at the beginning of the season anyway? I'd say they're getting their wish.

Well hopefully Manu's MRI comes out well. If I were to guess, I would say we don't see him play until December or later. But that's a total guess.

Does someone know when Manu will have his MRI ?
It seems that they canceled today's one because of swelling in his ankle.
Will they wait that he came back to SA ?

I'm guessing they would do it as soon as the swelling subsides enough ... 2-3 days, maybe?

Why the hell is it so hard to believe that Manu might just have wanted to play in his last Olympics?? I'm not saying you're wrong, people here obviously wanted Manu to play, but pressure wasn't the only factor here. Manu would have played either way IMO.

What if he said otherwise. Would our Argentinian fans have been ok with this? Keeping in mind the service that he's already given to the NT. Where i come from it would be ok. I suspect in Argentina probably not.

Yah i agree Manu wanted to play and im sure that's how it will always be but when he showed no improvement from injury, having his own doubts about being able to play. The naming of him as flagbearer woould of made it very hard for him to say NO. The timing of it seemed very opportunistic.

Manu LOVES olympics and NT. There's no presure here.

Manu showed improvement from injury. But his doctor say that was a time-bomb for anytime (NT or Spurs)
Everybody knew Manu was the flagbearer many months ago. Was too ovious.

You are right. You could tell from Manu's interviews how important this was to him in his soul. I believe with zero pressure, he would have still wanted to play. Manu loves the Olympics and playing for his country.

Well they should have announced it earlier not when there were doubts about his health. The fact was he wasn't 100 percent. The timing of it sucked.

Is so hard to understand?

There was NO PRESSURE HERE. Manu decided to play. There was NO PRESSURE for carring a flag! NOBODY TOLD ANYTHING TO HIM!

Get a clue:

San Antonio is a small market, Manu sign a contract because he believe SA is the best place to win a Championship (not the best place to make money), he's coming off the bench and help to win 3 rings in 7 years, all for the same price. All for the team.

But, if Money is all that matters:

-he should play for Panathinaikos instread Bologna
-he should play for Denver instread San Antonio
-he should play the Euroligue (Euros) instread the NBA (Dollars)

His work is the NBA but his spirit is the National Team ...Injuries can happen anytime and everywere (you liked or not, playing or not, resting or not, in the NBA, the olymplics, the parking lot, etc) You have nothing to say about it.

Loyalty and money are not the same thing for Manu Ginobili. That's why San Antonio´s small market will never be THAT lucky again with a big steal in the 57Th pick for less money.

Never.

Fuck you, ducks. If Manu were selfish, he would have sat out one or two games during that Lakers series because of his bum ankle. If he were selfish, he would have just stayed home and let down his whole country.

You are selfish. The guy is hurt and all you could think about is how it's going to affect the Spurs. Ungrateful SOB.

well, that's not entirely true. There was a great amount of pressure, as there is with any Argentine superstar in any sport. I don't doubt that had an impact on his decision. I do however, believe that, like Kori said, even with zero pressure Manu would have wanted to play.

Change Ginobili, Manu with Duncan, Tim then you would be right.

I agree. Manu is Manu but the only name that fits in that sentence is Tim Duncan.

I understand that Manu wanted to represent his country but it really really stinks that he aggravated his ankle injury.

I think with 2-3 months of rest he'll be back to form. While he gets worked back into rotation, Mason, Hill, and Udoka should get his, Barry's, and Finleys minutes. Then they can be more comfortable with the system.

When's their first game, anyways?
