"The Alabama State Employees' Insurance Board (http://www.alseib.org/HealthInsurance/) last week approved a plan that will require state employees who are obese or have health problems to make progress to address those issues or pay a monthly charge for health insurance"

Link worked for me. I am all for it. Now if we could only get something done about parents pumping junk food into their obese kids-defining it as child abuse, perhaps?

How people dont see the obvious slippery slope associated with these things is beyond me.

Slippery slope? Nobody bitches about your-fault auto accidents and violations being penalized by the auto insurance companies, or higher premiums for risky occupations. Or health insurance and life insurance costing you more just because you are older? Or outright unavailable if you are sick. Why bitch about bonus/malus health insurance for clients who indulge in risky behaviour with their weight, cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, etc?

That's a preview of what happens if we turn to single payer insurance. The insurance company, who ever it is, has the right to do risk assessments. I have the choice between about four insurance companies through my employer. Each has their own pros and cons.

Consider this. If we ever get the Dali-bama's version of Huillarycare, the government will turn around and put people into involuntary programs to lose weight, stop smoking, etc. They will implement such things, maybe not for a few years, but it will happen to save money.

The more power you give to the government, the less freedoms you enjoy. If you want to live as the ward of a government, move to some other country. Don't impose such things on me.
