SpursTalk's Top 50 Spurs
1. Tim Duncan
2. David Robinson
3. George Gervin
4. Gregg Popovich
5. Angelo Drossos
6. Manu Ginobili
7. Tony Parker
8. Sean Elliott
9. James Silas
10. Bruce Bowen
11. Larry Kenon
12. Avery Johnson
13. Alvin Robertson

------------------------------

To pass the time until the start of preseason, let's see how SpursTalk.com ranks the Top 50 Spurs. Those eligible for the list include all players, coaches and owners. I don't want to define "top" too narrowly, but I think the best way to do it would be to think of the list as a list of the 50 most influential people who have helped make the Spurs one of the most successful franchises in the history of sport.

For more information on what we are doing, check out this thread (http://spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103061).

In this thread, we will vote for spot number 14. Please place your vote. If you will, also explain in this thread why you voted how you did.

Thanks.

P.S.

Poll options listed in alphabetical order. If you want to vote for someone not on the list, post in the thread and I'll add the person.

Voting will end 2AM CST Saturday morning.

Please vote only once.

I'm going with Peter Holt. Without his approach as an owner our basketball guys wouldn't have been able to make the decisions they have in the first place. Some owners try to control and make decisions and he stays out of it. He's truly a great owner to have.

*edit*

I'm actually going with Moore. Underrated and appreciated. Holt will be my next vote.

My breakdown from yesterday plus the inclusion of Moore . . .

Johnny Moore
Only player not on the list that has his number retired by the Spurs. Led the league in assists in his second year in the NBA with an average of 9.6. Averaged 9+ points, 9+ assists and 2+ steals for five straight seasons. After the best season of his career and only 26 years old, got sick (Desert Fever) with a life threatening disease. Battled his way back to the court but was never the same. Second in franchise history in assists and fourth in steals.

Artis Gilmore
Played five season with the Spurs. Averaged 16.1 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocks over those five seasons. Shot 62.1% from the field while with the Spurs. Two-time NBA All-Star with the Spurs.

Bob Bass
Was the GM of the Spurs from 1974-75 to 1993-94. Filled in as interim coach four different times. Did a very good job of helping the Spurs remain a winning franchise while being given limited funds by the owners he worked for. In his 19 seasons as GM, the Spurs were a combined 894-750. The Spurs were at or above .500 in 14 out of the 19 years he was GM. As a coach, his all-time record was 143-108 (5th most coaching wins in franchise history, 6th best winning percentage in franchise history).

Mike Mitchell
Played for the Spurs for parts of seven seasons. Averaged 20+ points four of those seasons. Averaged 20.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while with the Spurs. Fifth All-Time in franchise history in points scored behind Gervin, Robinson, Duncan and Silas. Fourth All-Time in franchise history if field goals made behind Gervin, Robinson and Duncan.

Peter Holt
The owner during all four championship runs. Helped get the SBC Center built which allowed the Spurs to stay in San Antonio. Has been a hands-off owner and let the basketball people handle basketball business. Has paid luxury tax money at various times. Helped pass the current CBA which is very friendly toward small market teams.

RC Buford
Has been Pop's right-hand man behind the scenes since 1994. Buford was also an assistant coach under Larry Brown. Has been the general manager during the last three championships. He was the main scout responsible for Manu Ginobili. Also helped convince Pop to draft Tony Parker. Has avoided bad contracts and has targeted veteran role players who fit into the culture of the team.

I've always though Moore was overrated, although it's hard to ignore his retired jersey. Moore averaged a lot of assists but he also played on fast-paced teams with some of the best scorers of all-time. That said, I'm leaning toward voting for Moore even though Mitchell and Gilmore were likely better players. Still not sold on my pick yet.

Bass and Holt also are very good candidates at this point as well.

Voted Moore the last 3 times, so hopefully i don't have to keep voting for him ;)

But, Holt would be my other choice here. He has probably been forgotten a little bit too much actually - maybe should be a bit higher. Regardless of his limited budget, he does always seem quite the 'spurs fan' himself, proudly rooting for his (literally) team.

Voted for J Moore. I remember meeting him and Alvin once when I was an annoing little kid. I can't remember what year it was. I want to say it was the mid 80's. It was some type of JR Olympics or something. JM and Alvin were watching the Basketball game. While I was asking them stupid questions. I remember JM saying "Don't you want to watch the game"? I was'nt paying any attention to the game. Good memories. So if yall can tell me what event that was, that would be nice.

JMo...for the 4th time. He's another one of those guys, similar to AJ and Bowen, that if you only look at the stat sheet you'll miss what he was about. The guys closer to my age probably appreciate him more than those young bucks like Timvp.

I listened to my elders and voted Moore.

I hope my elders will remember that when it is time to vote Sho into the top 25. :toast

At least Nazr's family would vote for him.

Rasho's wouldn''t.

Because they would assume people would see that Rasho is an obvious pick for the list and that the family voting would just be overkill. :)

In all seriousness, I highly doubt that the real life Nazr would vote for himself at spot 14.

I ended up voting for Moore. And it looks like he won by two votes. Let me run the IP verifier to confirm the totals . . .

Edit: After the IP verifier, Moore ended up winning by one vote :wow
