------------------------------

To pass the time until the start of preseason, let's see how SpursTalk.com ranks the Top 50 Spurs. Those eligible for the list include all players, coaches and owners. I don't want to define "top" too narrowly, but I think the best way to do it would be to think of the list as a list of the 50 most influential people who have helped make the Spurs one of the most successful franchises in the history of sport.

For more information on what we are doing, check out this thread (http://spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103061).

In this thread, we will vote for spot number 17. Please place your vote. If you will, also explain in this thread why you voted how you did.

Thanks.

P.S.

Poll options listed in alphabetical order. If you want to vote for someone not on the list, post in the thread and I'll add the person.

Voting will end 2AM CST Tuesday morning.

Please vote only once.

Mike Mitchell

Mitchell was an important transitional player for the Spurs. A 6-foot-7 small forward from Auburn, he joined the team before George Gervin's eighth season and instantly became a solid second scorer. By the 1984-85 season, Gervin's last in San Antonio, Mitchell led the Spurs in scoring, the first player other than Gervin to lead the team since it joined the NBA in 1976. He was the team's top scorer again in 1985-86, at 23.4 points per game, and led the team in minutes played from 1983 to 1986.

Mitchell averaged 20.1 points in his seven seasons with the Spurs and is all over the team's list of all-time leaders. Most significantly, he ranks fourth in points scored in silver and black with 9,799. He also ranks eighth in games played (488), fourth in field goals made (4,152) and attempted (8,429), sixth in free throws made (1,480) and attempted (1,888) and 10th in all-time free throw percentage (78.4). He ranks eighth in three of the club's all-time playoff categories: points scored (646), and field goals made (273) and attempted (544).

"Mitch" scored 40 or more points 10 times during his Spurs days, including a high game of 47 in 1984.

When Mitchell became a free agent after the 1987-88 season, during which he averaged only 13.5 points, the Spurs opted not to re-sign him. But he became something of a bridge from the Gervin era to the David Robinson era when the Spurs brought him back for the 1990 playoffs, Robinson's first postseason.

I kinda like the idea of Mitchell here. Mitchell is no doubt the next player off the board. His competition is Holt, Bass and Moe for this spot.

was Budenholzer also part of the 1999 run coaching staff?

Sweat Pea, Negele Knight, Charles Smith I,Cory Alexander, Dwayne Schintzius, Walter Berry,Sleepy Floyd, Alfrederick Hughes, and Brad Lohaus

Brought to you by Bob Bass

Seriously? I don't understand the love. He was a long time "company man", and a decent guy, but was pretty much a dud in the player acquisition department, whether via draft or trades or FA.

My next three would be Mitchell, TC, and Chill. We already got three non-players in the top 20.

Absolutely Mike Mitchell was a rare talent. He was quite a scoring machine in his prime. The Spurs traded with Cleveland for (Jazz) Ronnie Brewer's dad, after getting "showcased", for Mitch in a trade that RC would be in awe of now.

Its now close. Mitchell is losing by only 3 votes. Get the vote out for the last Spur all star player. Holt can wait a little longer.

Going with Mitchell. You can make a case for him being the 12th person on this list ahead of the last four and Kenon.

Holt and Bass both are legit picks as well, though.

Malik belongs on the list, but not this high.

malik gets the 100 place and only that high due to him pulling his shirt over his head and letting his man dunk on the other end

Yeah that should undo all the good things he did.

Mario Elie not getting the love is crazy IMO. He was a vital part of the total transformation of this team from chokers to closers.

I don't know about everyone else, but I didn't vote for him because he only played ~120 games with the Spurs. Mitchell averaged 20 ppg for seven years.

Mario's coming up soon on my ballot. There's no way the Spurs win in 99 without him. The team was just sleepwalking through the season until they heard him unload to NBC on that Jazz game. They got fucking pissed and never let their hunger up again that season.

Holt has a strong case but I went with Mitchell.

I'm not quite old enough to have been able to see and appreciate Mitchell or Kenon's game, but from what I've read and heard... Both are vastly underrated and probably top ten players in terms of who you'd take in a pick-up game.

Yep. I'm starting to consider where he belongs just for turning that team into something special.
