Bobcats pick up option on Ely

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Charlotte Bobcats picked up the option on center Melvin Ely for the 2005-06 season.
The Bobcats acquired Ely in July with guard Eddie House in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers. Charlotte had until Oct. 31 to pick up the fourth-year option on Ely, a first-round draft pick in 2002.
``There was no reason to wait,'' Bobcats coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. ``We are looking forward to Melvin being an important part of our frontcourt rotation, and we're excited to secure him for at least the next two seasons.''
