LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Hollywood studio Columbia is planning to revive its hit 1980s franchise "Ghostbusters" with a third film that will reunite stars Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, it was reported Thursday.

Entertainment industry daily Variety reported on its website that Columbia Pictures has already hired screenwriters Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to write the third film in the money-spinning series.

The first two "Ghostbusters" movies -- about an intrepid team of ghost exterminators battling supernatural forces in New York -- grossed more than 500 million dollars worldwide in total.

Two other members of the original cast, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, would also return for the third film, Variety reported.

Director Ivan Reitman made both the 1984 original and the 1989 sequel.

Yes, but it's been going on for 25 years now, it's just that it is getting progressively worse.

Prediction - this movie will be unwatchably bad.

I bet there will be nepotism in the casting process and the ghost of Dan Ackroyd's career will get a role in the film.

The sequel or third installment was in the form of a video game. Not sure has will turn out. You can definitly count out Rick Moranis since he doesn't do film anymore.

Isn't this supposed to be a CGI movie? If so, then it's quadruple lame.

Oh no. I may be sensing a Steve Carrell and/or Seth Rogen overload in the making.

Citizen Kane. Sorry, but Citizen Cane made it sound like even less artistic than Ghostbusters:lol

if only the original casting of Peter Venkman was still around. would've been so much better. no knock on murray's part.

I have been wanting a third installment for a long time. In my opinion, they should have made it shortly after the sequel, but I think the writers know that this is a sacred franchise to many who grew up in the 80s and early90s and so they won't mess it up. I would feel more comfortable if I know Harold Ramis were producing it and Dan Akyroyd and him were writing the script, but we can't have everything we want.

I'm glad this next installment will include Aykroyd and Murray. I had read that they originally were just going to have cameos by an original cast member or two.

I thought Akyroyd and Ramis said the third installment was gonna be in the video game coming out in October?

I guess the money changed their minds.

If they wright the script, it will be gold.

At least we know Run-DMC won't be able to embarrass themselves on the soundtrack this time around.

Maybe they can make it right with Huey Lewis and let him do the soundtrack this time around.

When the similarities between this song and the theme song of the 1984 film Ghostbusters were heard, Huey Lewis sued Ray Parker Jr. for plagiarism, claiming that Parker had stolen the melody from "I Want a New Drug". Lewis had been approached to compose the main theme song for the film, but had to decline because of his work on the soundtrack for Back to the Future. The producers of the film allegedly then hired Ray Parker and asked him to write a theme that sounded like "I Want a New Drug".

In 2001, in an interview on VH1's Behind the Music, Lewis mentioned the suit. This allegedly breached a confidentiality agreement in the aftermath of the first suit, and led to a countersuit by Parker.
