TORONTO - Canadian NBA star Steve Nash was among eight inductees honoured Saturday at Canada's Walk of Fame celebrations.

This year's event competed with the Toronto International Film Festival but still managed to draw the biggest crowds in the city thanks to the stellar list of inductees who walked the red carpet, including Nash, Bryan Adams, Michael J. Fox, k.d. lang, the Kids in the Hall and James Cameron. The stars greeted fans, signed autographs and added their names to the growing list of luminaries recognized with stars on the walk.

The red carpet portion of the evening was just the beginning. After unveiling their stars, the inductees were feted at a gala tribute ceremony at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Sigourney Weaver, Linda Evangelista, Colm Feore, Jeanne Beker and Julie Bowen were among those helping to celebrate Canadian talent and innovation. After the tribute ceremony, guests moved next door to the Grand Ballroom at the Sheraton Centre for the inaugural Inductee Ball.

This year's inductees join over 100 other distinguished Canadians who have been honoured since the Walk's inaugural year in 1998.

Nash, who was born in South Africa and raised in Victoria, B.C., entered the NBA in 1996 after a college career that included three NCAA tournament appearances and two nods as West Coast Conference Player of the Year.

In the NBA, Nash became known as one of the best point guards in the league, playing with the Dallas Mavericks and the Phoenix Suns. He won back-to-back league MVP awards with the Suns in the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons.

Nash captained Canada's Senior Men's National Team at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, leading Canada to win their round robin group with a victory over Spain and a stunning 83–75 win over favoured Yugoslavia when he scored 26 points with eight rebounds and eight assists. Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinals with a loss to France. A victory over Russia in its final game of the tournament enabled Canada to salvage seventh place.

Nash again led Team Canada during qualifying for the 2004 Summer Olympics at the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was named tournament MVP, but Canada finished fourth, missing out on the three Olympic spots available.

To help young players, Nash backs the Steve Nash Youth League, designed primarily for boys and girls Grades 2-7. The program was developed in B.C. and now is offered by provincial associations across the country.

Last December, it was announced that Nash would be inducted into the Order of Canada.

About Canada's Walk of Fame

Established in 1998, Canada's Walk of Fame aims to engage Canadians in celebrating the accomplishments of Canadians who have excelled on the national or international stage in the areas of the arts, entertainment, sports and innovation. The annual celebration culminates in a televised tribute special that honours Canada's finest stars. Each inductee is immortalized, their names cemented into the sidewalks of Toronto's entertainment district.
