Retirement A Possibility For Abdur-Rahim

Sep 07, 2008 7:54 AM EST
Retirement is a strong possibility for Kings' forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim as his 31-year-old body begins to wear down, according to Sacramento Bee.

Abdur-Rahim's troublesome right knee could prevent him from taking part in October's training camp, which could mean retirement and an early start to a coaching career.

The Sacramento forward said his physical progress remains "slow," and that he's "going to sit down and focus on that when I get back."

He's currently on an 11-day trip to Africa that will conclude on Monday.

Abdur-Rahim averaged just 1.7 points and 1.7 rebounds in six games for the Kings in 2007-08.

He was either the most average 'franchise' player in the last ten years or the most above average role player....can't tell which.

Reef used to be pretty good, he just wasn't good a defense.

Is he a member of the US Olympic team in 2000? He must have been good back then....

He was basically a 20/8 guy his first 6 years in the league. But, I think all of his teams sucked and he never had much help down low. I don't think he was ever considered a franchise player. But, he would have been either a very good second option or a great third option on a good team.
