MSNBC Takes Incendiary Hosts From Anchor Seat
By BRIAN STELTER (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/s/brian_stelter/index.html?inline=nyt-per)
MSNBC tried a bold experiment this year by putting two politically incendiary hosts, Keith Olbermann (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/o/keith_olbermann/index.html?inline=nyt-per) and Chris Matthews, in the anchor chair to lead the cable news channel’s coverage of the election.
That experiment appears to be over.
After months of accusations of political bias and simmering animosity between MSNBC and its parent network NBC (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/nbc_universal/index.html?inline=nyt-org), the channel decided over the weekend that the NBC News correspondent and MSNBC host David Gregory (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/g/david_gregory/index.html?inline=nyt-per) would anchor news coverage of the coming debates and election night. Mr. Olbermann and Mr. Matthews will remain as analysts during the coverage.
The change — which comes in the home stretch of the long election cycle — is a direct result of tensions associated with the channel’s perceived shift to the political left.
“The most disappointing shift is to see the partisan attitude move from prime time into what’s supposed to be straight news programming,” said Davidson Goldin, formerly the editorial director of MSNBC and a co-founder of the reputation management firm DolceGoldin.
Executives at the channel’s parent company, NBC Universal (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/nbc_universal/index.html?inline=nyt-org), had high hopes for MSNBC’s coverage of the political conventions. Instead, the coverage frequently descended into on-air squabbles between the anchors, embarrassing some workers at NBC’s news division, and quite possibly alienating viewers. Although MSNBC nearly doubled its total audience compared with the 2004 conventions, its competitive position did not improve, as it remained in last place among the broadcast and cable news networks. In prime time, the channel averaged 2.2 million viewers during the Democratic convention and 1.7 million viewers during the Republican convention.
The success of the Fox News Channel in the past decade along with the growth of political blogs have convinced many media companies that provocative commentary attracts viewers and lures Web browsers more than straight news delivered dispassionately. ........................

Good move. Keith deserves his own show, as does Matthews.
But their bias defines them both and neither ever belonged in the anchor chair for the big dances.

I like the fact that Olbermann makes no bones about his biases and doesn't try to pretend to be objective in his reporting. That fact, however, suggests to me that it's journalistically wrong (and always has been) to have him be the primary news reporter for a major media outlet. I can understand the notion that Olbermann was intended to be a leftist foil to the right-ism (perceived or not) of Fox News, but I have thought for quite a while that Olbermann had taken that too far for someone purporting to report the news.

Olbermann is no wallflower and is not shy about tooting his own horn. He has rubbed others at MSobamaNBC the wrong way. Matthews was a big Hillary supporter and there were clashes with Olbermann in the past. There was another throw down on air with morning Joe and others . Lots of nasty stuff posted on U-TUBE.

MSNBC and it's parent company, and war profiteer, GM, show their true colors and paint this move as 'the end of an experiment in bias news reporting' by replacing highly successful shows with a, you guessed it, wing-nut biased news reporter...
http://www.allhatnocattle.net/corpnews.jpg
MSNBC's announcement that it is replacing Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews with David Gregory as anchors for its main political events (the upcoming presidential debates and election) vividly illustrates several long-obvious facts. First, nothing changes the behavior of our media corporations more easily than vocal demands and complaints from the Right, which petrify media executives and cause them to snap into line. From today's New York Times article identifying some of the causes for MSNBC's decision. In response to media criticism that the press is insufficiently substantive and adversarial to political power, the claim is frequently made that media outlets are simply driven by the profit motive, and that their programming choices are nothing more than a by-product of ratings. But in MSNBC's case, that is plainly untrue. Back in 2003, they actually canceled their highest-rated program, Phil Donahue's show, for purely ideological reasons -- because, at a time when the establishment "liberal media" were systematically amplifying the Government's pro-war views and excluding anti-war views, that short-lived MSNBC show was one of the only venues in America where one could hear anti-war viewpoints, and NBC's fear of angering the Government and the Right clearly caused them, first, to impose extreme and unusual restrictions on the show's content, and then to cancel it altogether.

Keith Olbermann said himself in a post on The Daily Kos that Donahue was not fired for ideological reasons. From what Olbermann said, Donahue's show was too expensive to produce and that Donahue was proving to be more and more difficult to work with.
I was already back working here - and I've said this before here -- when the Donahue show was cancelled.
I know it is one of the cardinal tenets of this place that Donahue was cancelled because of his political viewpoints, but I must tell you, that wasn't the reason.
Did his opposition to the war hasten the cancellation? I'm sure it did. But had there been no war, or had there even been no push for war, all I know about that show suggests it would have been cancelled anyway. There's a New York Times article I stumbled across the other day, from September 2002 I think, that talks about how he was nearly cancelled because of expenses and ratings, then.
My last submission: the same people who pulled the plug on Donahue are the ones who started, fought for, defended, and aided Countdown -- especially in the politically dangerous times of 2003 and 2004.

When is ABC gonna dump Gibson and Stephosausugus for being McCain ass lickers?
It's time to get a little bit angry, people.
As we all prepare for the upcoming circus show from ABC/Disney starring Charlie Gibson and the the scheduled phony "interview" with Sarah Palin, I wanted to provide everyone a chance to read the actual transcript and see how insulting Gibson was to Barack Obama and the church he belonged to. For one hour, ABC's Gibson and George Stephanopoulos ignored the war in Iraq, the growing recession, the lack of healthcare for nearly 50 million Americans, the millions who are losing their homes and the millions losing their jobs.
They could only pick and pick at Obama's church, his faith and his pastor.
And now, this little monstrous religious bigot from Alaska, Sarah Palin, who has been sequestered away in hiding from the media and all interviews, will now grant a sit down with Charlie Gibson.
Sarah Palin belongs to a church that teaches that Catholics are going to hell, that Jews are going to hell and deserve to be attacked by terrorists for rejecting Jesus, that homosexuals are sick and must be cured, that the world is coming to an end and that Alaska will be a special place for God's elite from the Anti-Christ, that books should be banned and that a girl who is raped by an axe murderer must endure nine months of pregnancy to make sure that men still have a divine right to procreate through the act of rape...yes, that is her faith. And there is more.
Take a read of just some of Gibson's obsession with and slander of Obama's church that went on for nearly one hour. Moreover, expect nothing remotely like this to be dealt to Palin. Why? Simple. She belongs to a white church.
From the transcripts:
GIBSON: Senator Obama, since you last debated, you made a significant speech in this building on the subject of race and your former pastor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. And you said subsequent to giving that speech that you never heard him say from the pulpit the kinds of things that so have offended people.
But more than a year ago, you rescinded the invitation to him to attend the event when you announced your candidacy. He was to give the invocation. And according to the reverend, I'm quoting him, you said to him: "You can get kind of rough in sermons. So, what we've decided is that it's best for you not to be out there in public." I'm quoting the reverend.
But what did you know about his statements that caused you to rescind that invitation? And if you knew he got rough in sermons, why did it take you more than a year to publicly disassociate yourself from his remarks?
OBAMA: Well, understand that I hadn't seen the remarks that ended up playing on YouTube repeatedly. This was a set of remarks that had been quoted in Rolling Stone magazine and we looked at them. And I thought that they would be a distraction, since he had just put them forward.
But, Charlie, I've discussed this extensively. Reverend Wright is somebody who made controversial statements, but they were not of the sort that we saw that offended so many Americans. And that's why I specifically said that these comments were objectionable. They're not comments that I believe in. And I disassociated myself with them.
And what I also said was the church and the body of Reverend Wright's work over the course of 30 years were not represented in those snippets that were shown on television and that the church has done outstanding work in ministries, on HIV/AIDS, prison ministries, providing people with the kind of comfort that we expect in our churches.
And so, what I think I tried to do in the speech here at the Constitution Center was speak to a broader context, which is that there is anger in the African-American community that sometimes gets expressed, whether in the barbershop or in the church. That's true not just in the African-American community. That's true in other communities, as well.
But what we have the opportunity to do is to move beyond it. And that's what I think my candidacy represents. And Senator Clinton mentioned earlier, that we have to connect with people. That's exactly what we've done throughout this campaign.
The reason we've attracted new people into the process, the reason we've generated so much excitement, the reason that we have been so successful in so many states across the country, bridging racial lines, bridging some of the old divisions, is because people recognize that, unless we do, then we're not going to be able to deliver on the promises that people hear every 4 years, every 8 years, every 12 years.
And it's my job in this campaign to try to move beyond some of those divisions, because when we are unified there is nothing that we cannot tackle.
GIBSON: Senator Clinton, let me -- I'm sorry, go ahead -- Senator Clinton, let me follow-up and let me add to that.
You have said that, "He would not have been my pastor," and you said that you have to speak out against those kinds of remarks and implicitly, by getting up and moving, and I presume you mean out of the church. There are 8,000 members of Senator Obama's church, and we have heard the inflammatory remarks of Reverend Wright, but so, too, have we heard testament to many great things that he did.
Do you honestly believe that 8,000 people should have gotten up and walked out of that church?
CLINTON: I was asked a personal question, Charlie, and I gave a personal answer. Obviously, one's choice of church and pastor is rooted in what one believes is what you're seeking in church and what kind of, you know, fellowship you find in church. But I have to say that, you know, for Pastor Wright to have given his first sermon after 9/11 and to have blamed the United States for the attack, which happened in my city of New York, would have been just intolerable for me. And, therefore, I would have not been able to stay in the church.
And maybe it's, you know, just, again, a personal reflection that, regardless of whatever good is going on, and I have no reason to doubt that a lot of good things were happening in that church.
You get to choose your pastor. You don't choose your family, but you get to choose your pastor. And when asked a direct question, I said I would not have stayed in the church.
OBAMA: Well, let me just respond to two things. Absolutely, many of these remarks were objectionable. I've already said that I didn't hear them because I wasn't in church that day. I didn't learn about those statements until much later. But...
GIBSON: But you did rescind the invitation to him...
OBAMA: But that was on something entirely different, Charlie. That was on a different statement. And I think that what Senator Clinton referred to was extremely offensive, to me and a lot of people.
But what I should also point out is that Senator Clinton's former pastor publicly talked about how Reverend Wright was being caricatured and that, in fact, this is somebody who had maintained an extraordinary ministry for many years.
And so there are two important points. Number one, I wasn't aware of all these statements, and I can understand how people would take offense.
But, number two, the church is a community that extends beyond the pastor. And that church has done outstanding work for many, many years.
The third point I guess I would make is, once again, that unless we can bridge some of these divides, we're not going to solve problems in this country. And what my entire body of work over the last 20 years has been devoted to is getting blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, young, old to work together, starting when I was a community organizer.
And my own life embodies that diversity. That's what America is about, and that's what this campaign has been about.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Senator, two questions. Number one, do you think Reverend Wright loves America as much as you do? And, number two, if you get the nomination, what will you do when those sermons are played on television again and again and again?
OBAMA: You know, George, look, if it's not this, then it would be something else. I promise you, if Senator Clinton got the nomination, there will be a whole bunch of video clips about other things.
In a general election, we know that there are going to be all kinds of attacks launched and leveled. There have been quite a few leveled in this primary campaign.
And I have confidence in the American people that when you talk to the American people honestly and directly about what I believe in, what my plans are on health care, on energy, when they see my track record of the work that I've done on behalf of people who really need help, I have absolute confidence that they can rally behind my campaign.
And, you know, the notion that somehow that the American people are going to be distracted once again by comments not made by me, but somebody who is associated with me that I have disowned, I think doesn't give the American people enough credit.
STEPHANOPOULOS: You've disowned him?
OBAMA: The comments, comments that I've disowned. Then that is not something I...
STEPHANOPOULOS: But you do believe he's as patriotic as you are?
OBAMA: This is somebody who's a former marine. So, I believe that he loves this country. But I also believe that he's somebody who, because of the experiences he's had over the course of a lifetime, is also angry about the injustices that he's had.
GIBSON: I'm getting a little out of balance here. Do you want to take a few seconds or do you want to go to the next question?
CLINTON: I think in addition to the questions about Reverend Wright and what he said and when he said it, and for whatever reason he might have said these things, there were so many different variations on the explanations that we heard.
And it is something that I think deserves further exploration because clearly, what we've got to figure out is how we're going to bring people together in a way that overcomes the anger, overcomes the divisiveness and whatever bitterness there may be out there. You know?
It is clear that, as leaders, we have a choice who we associate with and who we apparently give some kind of seal of approval to. And I think that it wasn't only the specific remarks but some of the relationships with Reverend Farrakhan, with giving the church bulletin over to the leader of Hamas, to put a message in.
You know, these are problems. And they raise questions in people's minds. And, so, this is a legitimate area, as everything is, when we run for office, for people to be exploring and trying to find answers.

Olbermann Canned for Crying Foul at GOP Exploitation of 9/11 Tragedy
Countdown anchor tossed out as a pariah of the ‘fair and balanced’ main-stream media
Aaron Dykes
Infowars
September 10, 2008
MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann lashed out at the blatant exploitation of the 9/11 attacks during the GOP convention– and is now paying for it with a demotion and a round-beating from the all the self-righteous media now attacking his sins of ‘bias.’
Keith Olbermann, well-known critic of terrorism fear-mongering and the Bush administration alike, has now been fired from his anchor position at MSNBC for his alleged ‘bias’ in reporting.
While he has come under fire for ‘leaning left,’ the straw that broke the camel’s back was not Olbermann’s preference for Obama or for Democrats over Republicans, but the crime of criticizing the blatant exploitation of the September 11th attacks.
Olbermann apologized to viewers shortly after the GOP convention aired a blatant propaganda video invoking 9/11– which erroneously linked Iran with 9/11, and readily showed burning buildings and victims of the attacks in the name of spurning on towards "victory" in the War on Terror and electing John McCain:
"If at this late date any television network had of its own accord shown that much graphic videotape– I speak as someone who lost several friends there– it, we would be rightly eviscerated at all corners, perhaps by the Republican party itself for exploiting the memories of the dead and for perhaps trying to evoke that pain again. If you reacted to that videotape the way I did, I apologize. It is a subject of great pain for many of us still and it was probably not appropriate to be shown."
Olbermann apologized to viewers shortly after the GOP convention aired a blatant propaganda video invoking the tragedy of the 9/11 attacks in the name of spurning on towards "victory" in the War on Terror and electing John McCain.
For that statement, and presumably others, Olbermann and Hardball’s Chris Matthews, who apparently aided the former in his discussion, will no longer be primary anchors during MSNBC’s 2008 election coverage, but will be mere correspondents for David Gregory, who is cozy enough with the Bush Administration to dance unashamedly with Karl Rove.
Tom Brokaw, who was reporting alongside Olbermann when the statement in question was made, may have had a role in his ousting. The Washington Times states:
At a panel in Denver, sponsored by the Joan Shorenstein Center on Press, Politics, and Public Policy, Mr. Brokaw said that MSNBC hosts Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann demonstrated bias in their election reporting: "I think Keith has gone too far. I think Chris has gone too far."
If biased news reporting were really a crime, there would not only be a staffing shortage at every TV network, but Fox News headquarters would be struck by lightning. All of the major news networks are completely subservient to the establishment two-party dictatorship and, as such, incapable of acting in the public’s best interest anyway.
MSNBC isn’t left-leaning, it’s a corporate mouthpiece for the military-industrial complex, alongside CNN, FOX, ABC, CBS, NBC etc. ad nauseam. Olbermann was merely a Howard Beale-figure– good at grafting a segment of the population opposed to the establishment media’s stronghold into its viewership circle.
Not only is the cry of ‘bias’ a case of the pot calling the kettle black, but it is the case of making a pariah out of the one MSM anchor who tells some truth inside a pit of vipers– Olbermann was, for instance, the sole televised anchor to report on a Cheney staff meeting where staging a false-flag incident was admittedly considered. The manufactured crisis would have sacrificed Navy SEALS to provocate war with Iran.
While Cheney admittedly considered crafting terror outright, and murdering Americans in the process, Olbermann is the one attacked for having the gall to criticize the acts of exploitation.
But I suppose I have forgotten– this is a post-9/11 world whose first ordinance is to never forget the lessons of September the 11th– deal harshly with anyone who questions 9/11 and does not go along with its seeming mandate for endless war, especially one who questions a factually unstable video blatantly tugging at heartstrings in the name of continuing to exploit the tragedy so that the ‘War on Terror’ may go on. That, Keith Olbermann, must never be done. Shame, apparently, on that black spot of bias.
And who, exactly, has been fired from Fox News for their ‘fair and balanced’ persuasions?
Chris Matthews was not defended in this article.

Interesting no one was interested in what they had to say...while Fox was pulling record ratings and better ratings then all of the other Networks combined. And Fox had been slumping this year. Yeah, NBC News yucked that Rove dancing right up but at the same time, we're supposed to believe that Keith Olbermann on MSNBC saying "Jesus, Joe, get a shovel" is out of bounds and tarnishes the NBC News brand....fucken morons...

MSNBC's Doomed 'Experiment'
By Brent Bozell
The executive suite at MSNBC is the last hardened corner of America to concede that maybe Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews are nowhere close to the textbook definition of detached, "straight news" anchor. Their decision to abandon what was tenderly called their anchoring "experiment" only acknowledges that the idea was a bust: MSNBC was regularly coming in dead last among the commercial cable-news and broadcast-news network covering the conventions.
NBC News is coming to the realization that Olbermann and Matthews aren’t only suppressing MSNBC’s ratings on election and convention nights, they’re ruining whatever credibility NBC’s brand retained. When the boos really kicked in during Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech in St. Paul, the delegates started chanting "NBC! NBC!" as the foremost example of partisan excess from an "objective" source. It’s gotten so bad that old NBC war horse Tom Brokaw is decrying how these men have "gone too far." This is shocking stuff coming from an anchorman who gave a Reagan-trashing interview to Mother Jones magazine in his Eighties heyday.
It’s important to note that in the day-to-day flow of anti-Republican acid at MSNBC, this announcement means very little. It’s not like their shows were canceled, like poor Tucker Carlson. Matthews and Olbermann still retain their regular hours of fulmination. In fact, the network brass made it very clear in their statement that abandoning the anchorman experiment would enable the two liberal agitators "to offer more candid analysis during live coverage." Translation: We don’t think these blabby, childish embarrassments to journalism are animated enough.
The convention coverage wasn’t embarrassing enough, apparently.
Start with Olbermann coming typically unglued because the Republicans dared to show a video in remembrance of September 11. It was about three minutes long. It contained allegedly controversial themes like jihadists have wanted to kill Americans for decades. They still want to kill Americans. We say never again. No more attacks like September 11. So what?
Sounding like he was trying to choke down tears, or maybe vomit, Olbermann declared the video was inappropriate, and that if his network showed this much 9/11 footage, "we would be rightly eviscerated at all quarters, perhaps by the Republican Party itself, for exploiting the memories of the dead and perhaps even for trying to evoke that pain again." This is ludicrous, considering how much Matthews and Olbermann boosted the Kerry-endorsing "Jersey Girls" in 2004 and their crusade to charge President Bush with the crime of 9/11.
The day after the Republican convention ended, Olbermann named John McCain the "Worst Person in the World." Olbermann lamented that when McCain suggested to Time magazine that Iraq is now a "peaceful and stable country," he revealed "a man suffering from at least one actual delusion, to say nothing of an utter disrespect for the meaning of the loss of life. It is not funny. It is shameful."
And MSNBC wants more "candid analysis."
After Barack Obama concluded his Athenian oration from Invesco Field in Denver, Olbermann and Matthews weren’t glum. They were absolutely giddy. Olbermann was wowed: "For 42 minutes, not a sour note and spellbinding throughout in a way usually reserved for the creations of fiction. An extraordinary political statement." Matthews found a way to top that, and thumb conservatives in the eye: "You know, I’ve been criticized for saying he inspires me, and to Hell with my critics!...In the Bible, they talk about Jesus serving the good wine last. I think the Democrats did the same."
The goo flowed like lava from a volcano over Barack’s historic acceptance address. Restraining his thrilled leg, Matthews also announced: "It is an iconic night in history: we'll all remember this night as long as we live." Olbermann oozed that Obama was both Mandela and Gorbachev: "it happens as suddenly in some respects as the Soviet Union crumbled or apartheid was beaten in South Africa."
Outside of special events coverage, MSNBC’s executives haven’t really seen the light about how their Obamaholics Unanimous lineup is bad for ratings. Even as they yank Matthews and Olbermann away from the anchor desk, MSNBC’s adding hard-left Air America radio host Rachel Maddow to consolidate the "progressive" carpet bombing after dark. They think they’re the Genius Channel. In a gooey Boston Globe puff piece on Maddow, MSNBC prime-time boss Bill Wolff declared his network is a brand for "high-powered intellects...I'm not saying we're NPR, but there is an appetite for really smart discussion of the news."
And these people think John McCain is suffering from a delusion.

Tonight's "Special Comment" was the act of a desperate man. The nerve of saying that McCain is now "aiding and abeding" Bin Laden is so pathetic. I hope he got fired tonight. The Republicans had every right to run 9/11 stuff that night at the RNC. They were in charge. If it was the other way around, you bed your ass, the Democrats would've paraded that story out there as well. Olbermann calling it 9/11 TM was just horrible.
