View Full Version : Kobe to forgo surgery

After seeking numerous opinions from hand specialists, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has decided to forgo surgery on his right pinkie. Fresh off his Olympic Gold Medal performance in Beijing, Bryant expressed that he did not want to miss any time on the court when Lakers training camp opens later this month.

"I have always felt that I can still focus and play at a high level even through various injuries. That's really just part of the game. When the doctors told me recovery from a procedure could be 12 weeks, I just decided now was not the time to have surgery. What it really came down to for me is that I just didn't want to miss any time 'punching the clock' for the Lakers, given all we are trying to accomplish as a team this NBA season. I am just really excited and looking forward to being there with the guys when camp opens in a few weeks. That is a real bonding process and if I can avoid being on the sidelines for that, God willing, I will," said Bryant.

wow..the injury must have not been as serious as intially reported during the all-star game. The media played him out to be more of a hero than he was as he carried to the lakers to the finals with a pinkie that required surgery. Only to find out he doesnt need surgery

To be followed by an interview on ESPN in which he announces that he'll have no surgery. And an interview on L.A. sports radio tomorrow saying that he's getting the surgery. And then Phil will say that he spoke with Kobe and he's not getting any surgery. And then Kobe will make a press release saying that he's already received a local anesthetic. And then Stephen A.'s sources will tell him that he's already had the surgery. Only to be trumped by Peter Vescey's sources saying that Kobe needs a kidney and the pinkie story is just a front. At which point it will be revealed that Kobe had it amputated Ronnie Lott style just to prove what a warrior he is. Reached for a comment Shaq will say that its simply an attempt to make his hands look less empty because of all the rings that he won't be winning with Shaq out of LA.

What an idiot. Get your surgery done like you're supposed to so it won't hurt you later on in the season, especially for a playoff run. You jackass. By trying to play the "warrior hero," you're actually presenting possible future problems for your health and your team.

Ego check yourself, Kobe.

I'm sure he has had guidance from the Laker brass regarding this. From what I can glean from these posts on KB24 is that the injury is pretty much a non-issue. They always say...well if he hits it again he'll need to take time off...well any player that gets his finger wacked with any sort of pressure and jolt will be sitting.

Right now, there's a kobe lovefest going on with his performance in the Olympics, being a "team" playe....I think many people or rather Laker fans will applaud his decision to think about the team first.....they will admire his noble deed until....they struggle, either don't make the playoffs or are eliminated in early rounds....then the hating will begin...again.....:hat

..well any player that gets his finger wacked with any sort of pressure and jolt will be sitting.

Uh what? Not necessarily true. And, with Kobe's finger in its present condition, it will take less to aggravate it or make it worse. That's bad logic.

He should be getting surgery. His ego won't let him. If he's able to play a full season, no harm, no foul. But if he re-aggravates it and it makes him miss more games than he would have had he just gotten surgery, he's a jackass.

Kobe was never injured to begin with. He hyped up this minor injury so that the media will play up the "he's such a warrior playing through an injury that may debilitate him at any time!" talk.

Typical Kobe move.

I knew something was fishy when I kept hearing reports about Kobe waiting to announce his pinky surgery. If the recovery time was around 6 weeks he would have had the surgery immediately after the Olympics.

I don't know what to think about his decision. Clearly he can still play at a high level, but I think he needs to do what's best for himself in this case and get the surgery that he needs. I don't trust that he will hold up for the entire season without doing further damage to it.

He's supposedly forgoing it b/c the recovery time is not 6 weeks, but 12 weeks, and that's assuming the rehab goes perfectly. He probably sees title this year and doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize it. I don't think he pulled a Paul Pierce, but who knows.

Well I think Kobe knows what he's doing..he's got several doctors opinions and they said not to have surgery, because the fracture has healed, theres still a completely torn ligament in there but he got used to playing with it. So he probably will get it fixed after we win the championship next season and then work on it all summer.

The Orange County Register chimes in.

Kobe’s surgery postponed (http://lakers.freedomblogging.com/2008/09/09/kobes-surgery-postponed/)
Bryant to skip surgery
by ART THOMPSON III, OCREGISTER.COM

Although Lakers star Kobe Bryant announced this afternoon on his website kb24.com that he is bypassing surgery on his injured right pinky finger, The Orange County Register has learned that it is all but certain that he will have the surgery at the conclusion of the 2008-2009 season.

By opting not to have surgery at this time, Bryant is expected to participate in drills, when the Lakers open training camp Sept. 27, at their El Segundo practice site. However, it has not been determined what limitations will be placed on him and how extensive Bryant would be used in the exhibition games.

Although Bryant said he made the decision not to have surgery, as planned prior to the opening of training camp, after consulting with numerous hand specialists, the root of his decision is linked to the return of Andrew Bynum.

Bryant believes that the Lakers need to establish early team chemistry and cohesiveness when the regular season starts, with Bynum in the lineup, because the Lakers played much of the second half of the 2007-2008 season and the entire playoffs without their injured 21-year old center.

One of the teams expected to challenge the defending Western Conference champion Lakers for the conference crown this coming season are the San Antonio Spurs.

However, the Spurs will be without one of their top players, Manu Ginobili, when the regular season begins. Ginobili injured his ankle during the 2008 NBA playoffs against Phoenix and aggrevated the injury while playing in the Olympics for defending gold medalist Argentina against Team USA. Ginobili had surgery last month.

Bynum suffered a dislocated left knee cap Jan. 13, against Memphis, and missed the remainder of this past season. Meanwhile, Bryant suffered a torn ligament and avulsion fracture of the right pinky Feb. 5, against New Jersey.

Due to the timing of the injury and the Lakers’ position in the playoff race, Bryant put off surgery at that time and shortly thereafter announced that he would postpone getting his finger repaired until after the Beijing Olympics in August.

Bryant helped lead Team USA to a gold medal, the Americans beating Spain and the Lakers’ Pau Gasol in the gold-medal game.

Bryant was able to get through the NBA season and the Olympic competition by taping his finger and receiving theraputic treatment on it, a procedure that he likely will continue this season.

120 miles, oh noooooooooooooooo. That is a two hour drive to go see a game. That is besides the point. Just because you do not have a team IN YOUR CITY does not mean you cannot root for the 3 teams in your state. So all the cities that do not have teams cannot root for anyone?

Nice try. If you are going to dog someone for liking a team, at least have your own. That is like bashing a guy for his ugly girlfriend while you sit at home jerking it every single weekend.
