I just wish it was a swim meet and Josh said "I don't do no swimmin cuz I'm black", nobody would give a shit about any of this.

Hahah, that's a joke but that shit is also kinda true...I didn't learn to swim until my late 20's. I almost drowned twice in my life.

How does Obama represent all black Americans? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard.

If Obama wins the presidency, what will be the first thing written about him in the history books? No matter what Obama does in office, there will be 1 sure fire line about him in the history books.

The day Obama wins the presidency, what line will EVERY newspaper have in common.

What would be that line?

There's nothing wrong with that. He took advantage of the benefits of the system...so why is he now dissing that same system? It worked rather great for him.

Yes, he wouldn't fit in, he's not African except from the gene pool. He's black but he's also American. The Star Spangled banner represents America, it's not the white people anthem, it's the American anthem.

If he wants to diss his country's anthem, sure go ahead but don't say it's because he's black because that has nothing to do with it. Saying you don't sing the anthem makes you sound un-patriotic which is whatever, but saying it's because you're black is just ignorant.

Rev. Wright doesn't and his views didn't represent Obama, according to Obama, same thing.

What's ignorant is him not giving an explanation for why he said, "Black", in regards to his explanation.

You gotta be kidding me if you don't know that answer. Even a kid in grammar school can give you this answer if Obama becomes president.

You and I both know what Obama will be known for above all else if he becomes president unless he does something truly great like solve poverty or hunger.

Ron Artest on the Josh Howard Fiasco (http://slamonline.com/online/2008/09/ron-artest-on-the-josh-howard-fiasco/)
by Marcel Mutoni

What? You were expecting someone else?

Naturally, the first athlete to publicly acknowledge L’affaire Josh was Ron Artest, a man who has never been afraid to tackle race relations head on.

The Sacramento Bee emailed Artest about the controversy, and below is his measured response.

“I think josh howards comment is a reflection on education. I think the schools need to teach deeper in the history classes and make the students aware of racism but also teach them that all people are not bad.

“I can relate to not feeling wanted by my own country at times but as I dug deeper I realized that America is divided and we need leaders to bring America closer together. An example where I felt unwanted by my country was when I didn’t get a chance to tryout for my national team. I believed it was because my history. I hope he overcomes this. Family 1st”

I’m not sure what Ron means with the “Family 1st” thing, but his response is interesting nonetheless. Always warms my heart when Mr. Artest proves to be the voice of reason in what is quickly turning into a predictably ugly debate.

Thanks for the article Duncan228, I have not seen it.

He would have been great on the Olympic team, I think Ron knows how to behave when surrounded by people he respects.

I like Artest and even though he's been boneheaded at times, he doesn't blame it on being black, he blames it on Ron Artest being Ron Artest.

NBA to go light on Josh Howard (http://mavsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/09/nba-to-go-light-on-josh-howard.html)

Apparently, Josh Howard's latest brush with controversy won't cost him cash. More importantly, it won't cost him any games.

An official from the NBA said the league is not likely to take any action against Howard for showing disrespect to The Star Spangled Banner.

The spokesman cited previous incidents involving Charlie Ward and Allen Iverson, who both made controversial statements and received no repercussions.

When you think about it, that's probably the prudent move by the league. When you start legislating against freedom of speech, you're treading on ground that is almost certain to bring up a legal discussion.

Besides, the league could have plenty of other reasons to dip into Howard's bank account with his summer street racing and last season's admission of marijuana use.

Mark Cuban tries spin control for Josh Howard (again) (http://mavsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/09/mark-cuban-tries-spin-control-for-josh-h.html)

Gotta give Mark Cuban credit for publicly having Josh Howard's back, even if Cuban's take on J-Ho's latest bonehead incident makes absolutely no sense.

Owner Mark Cuban said the Mavericks dealt with Howard's flag football episode after it happened in July.

"That said, we will be going through some advanced communication-skill sessions together this training camp," Cuban said Tuesday. "I have explained to him that cellphone cameras are not your friend and that what you think you said on camera is never what people will hear when it shows up on YouTube or TV.

"There is only one universal response that works: 'Both teams played hard.'"

What exactly did Howard think he was saying when he looked into the camera and came up with this doozy? "'The Star-Spangled Banner' is going on. I don't celebrate this [expletive]. I'm black."

So the solution is apparently advising Howard to give nothing but boring, bland quotes, which is what he has been delivering in the Mavs' locker room on a regular basis anyway.

The Mavs' PR folks will have their hands full trying to fix J-Ho's image, but they can't help him if he doesn't grow up fast.

he claims he is a veteran so it might affect him differently.

for my perspective, i just finished coast guard training and currently working on my degree, it doesnt bother me one bit that FinDog chooses to remain seated during the national anthem. like he said before, its not like he's sitting down while burning the american flag, and shooting the bird at people. if he thinks its pointless, then that's his opinion, as long as he's not interrupting others. i personally think the national anthem before sporting events might not be needed. who really cares anyway, this country is about freedom to do what you want, if i see somebody sitting down during the anthem, it really wont bother me at all. i cant see how it can possibly affect others. its not a big deal

Cuban made himself look bad in Howard mess (http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/8594344/Cuban-made-himself-look-bad-in-Howard-mess?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=73)
by Mike Kahn

Shocked and appalled ... that was the general reaction this week when the video showed up of Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard mocking the national anthem and using his race as a reason for doing so prior to a charity flag football game hosted by Allen Iverson back in July.

There were plenty of reasons for people to be upset, and it's been an unfortunate run of bad judgment shown by Howard over the past five months or so that has threatened to have a long-term effect on what had been a very promising, All-Star career.

Just Joshing? Josh Howard is taking some heat after his controversial remarks about the Star Spangled Banner. Not sure what all the fuss is about? Watch Howard's rant HERE. Howard's indiscretions are one thing.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban's are quite another.

That Cuban would rush to Howard's defense was no surprise. He is fierce in his support of his players — you would think he changed the name to Mavericks after he bought the team.

Cuban has often gone over the top in his ferocity when he feels an injustice has been done or if he is in disagreement over any perception or decision on a topic he deems important. It's a big reason why he is beloved and despised by so many. He is very bright and is one of those to have gotten in early on the Internet, made huge money and had the wisdom to turn it into much, much more.

But in the process of becoming this outspoken maverick, he has turned into a bully. In some ways, he has taken on some of the same characteristics as one of his basketball heroes, the former coach of his alma mater at Indiana, Bob Knight.

Nonetheless, Cuban's "Maverick Blog" is always interesting and often insightful on topics that range from basketball to Web trends to politics to search engines.

So when I checked in on Friday, "shocked and appalled" was I upon seeing what he had posted — too many e-mails pock-marked with racist commentary hurled at Howard, the NBA in general and criticism of Cuban for supporting such a player and league.

He led it with "Thanks for the advice on Josh," and went right into allowing these feeble-minded folks to voice their ugly opinions under the sarcastic guise "let them voice their embarrassing opinions and their e-mail addresses." It's easy to understand where he was coming from, because of those dangerous minds that categorize people with a hate that can curdle the skin.

But in the process, his arrogance toward the under-class lowered his own standards and mentality to their level. Later on in the day, he removed them from the "Maverick Blog," contending it made him sick to his stomach all day.

His contention was that he made his point and he hoped that something good came out of those e-mails being posted.

Still, I was shocked and appalled.

Nothing good can ever come out of giving a forum to that kind of commentary. Cuban did it just so they would embarrass themselves and maybe get a taste of their own medicine since their e-mail addresses were there for all to see.

What he seemed to ignore, however, is that it gave legs to that kind of ignorant, ugly and destructive thinking. In his own arrogance toward the fools, he was giving them a forum to incite others to climb aboard. He's too smart not to realize how many racist, dangerous minds are out there ... and that kind of situation only helps give legs to more people like them.

Cuban did it out of spite and his own imperious nature. There is no learning out of promoting ignorance, no matter how sarcastic and obvious the forum may be. It was born out of his own arrogance and sense of superiority that has come with his wealth and power and has created an even more embarrassing situation for the Mavericks.

All that does it make matters worse.

This has nothing to do with political correctness. There is a fine line between people that show no fear for the consequences of their words and actions that stay above the fray, or those that actually get a kick out of stimulating the fray because they can. And that's where Cuban is in this instance.

His honest appraisal of things has so often been refreshing and informative. Having met him almost 13 years ago when he was beginning Broadcast.com, it's been an amazing and impressive climb to where he is today.

But if he has reached the state where he actually believes he's so bright that he can embarrass people out of their ignorance, then his own forum of ignorance becomes a dangerous place in and of itself.

And that's what he managed to accomplish Friday. Indeed, taking down those posts was "the right thing to do."

But if he actually believes that makes him look smarter, then he unequivocally missed the point himself.

spurs_fan_in_exile
09-23-2008, 01:15 PM
I don't think Cuban made himself look bad as much as he did the Mavericks fanbase. Obviously not all of the fans are racist shitheads, but this is one situation where just letting the situation die a quiet death would have been infinitely wiser. His reaction just gave the story some legs and extra coverage while advertising to the world that at least some portion of their fans are bigots. That's true of probably any fan base, but it's one thing to assume it and another to broadcast proof of the fact to the world.

There are a lot of religious groups that do not observe flag etiquette at all, including standing for the National Anthem. The idea is that to do so is a form of idolatry. (Placing a symbol before God.)

These include:

The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)
Mennonites (particularly the Amish)
Huttites

Apparently, all Quakers and Mennonites are "fucking douche-bags and not worth the sweat of one of our soldiers balls." This despite the fact that many have been incarcerated and/or tortured for their beliefs. By the way, we're not talking the 100 Years War, here. It has happened in the U.S. as recently as the late 20th century.

"One of the best-known stories of WWI COs is of five Hutterites - four brothers named Hofer and Jacob Wipf. They had been sent to Alcatraz prison after their courts-martial, where they again refused to don the military uniform. The authorities put them in solitary confinement cells in the dungeon, which were dank, cold, dark, dirty and infested. The men were locked up wearing nothing but light underwear, and were given no blankets or beds. They had only the cement floor for a bed. They were given nothing to eat for the first four and a half days, and were given only half a glass of water every 24 hours. The last one and a half days they were forced to stand with their hands tied together crosswise above their heads so high that they could barely touch the floor with their feet. When they were finally released from solitary confinement, they were covered with a rash, badly bitten by insects, and their arms were so swollen they could not put their jackets on. They also had bruises from being beaten with clubs. Soon after they were again sent to their cells day and night, though not with their hands tied up. After four months, they were transferred to Fort Leavenworth. Upon their arrival, they were made to take off their clothes in order to put on prison uniforms, except that it took two hours for the uniforms to arrive, and the men had to wait outside in the freezing cold. Joseph and Michael Hofer became so ill that they had to be taken to the hospital, where they both later died. Jacob Wipf and David Hofer were put into solitary confinement cells because again they refused to do work assigned by the military. Their hands were stretched out through the iron bars of their cells and the wrists chained together. They were made to stand that way for nine hours a day, getting only bread and water. This lasted for two weeks."

http://www.mcusa-archives.org/mhb/Yoder-Conscience.html

Similar incidents have been documented well into the Vietnam Era, not to mention the case of Muhammad Ali.

This isn't exactly the same issue as standing for the National Anthem, but it is to the Quakers and Mennonites. I'm so proud of my country at times like this.

Actually, what you said is kind of true.

We saw how the Portland fans responded to the negative antics of their players. The organization was forced to clean house just to attempt to re-connect with the fans and they were successful.

Cuban, on the other hand, does his Napoleon-esque rant of how his guys are being unfairly treated, etc and then tries to PUNISH the fans by exposing the emails and IPs of everyone who was angry about Howard. Keep in mind this is the umpteenth time Howard has embarrassed the organization and its fans.

Anyone who blindly roots for that organization needs to wake up and realize that the Mavericks are the armpit of the NBA.

Others on this board have taken notice and changed which team they support (Findog, Monos etc).

Maybe you should do the same.

i don't know if you're just a complete dumbass or just somewhat of a dumbass but actually defending most of those racist bastards is where you went wrong in your argument. don't say you don't defend them either because the quote above is saying it was wrong for cuban to expose the trash of our society. to even call those people fans is a fuckin' stretch... those "fans" aren't just angry, they are disgusting wastes of life and deserve all the backlash their wicked forked tongues have caused them!

Are you kidding? Not only are they widely viewed as the unprecedented "team of the future", but their fans are crazy about the team again. Did you see the Rose Garden when they drafted Oden?

They got rid of a lot of dead weight and re-vamped their image with the fans. Kudos to Paul Allen.

1) Dirk Choking
2) Cuban pushing away cameras after defeat like a little bitch
3) Shawn Bradley getting dunked on
4) Watching them get curb-stomped by the Warriors in 2007.

But if you really think about it, you remember the things like Josh Howard's numerous off-the-court incidents, or Brandon Bass "veto-ing" the original Kidd deal (priceless), or Cuban claiming the Finals were fixed in 2006.

Its no surprise why so many Mavs fan have abandoned their team on this board and have instead decided to go with up and coming teams like the Blazers.
