Building a macro in excel...

What is a macro and how do I create one on excel. I need it to calculate NPV. It is a project for class. I just need some hints or help to get started. Or better yet who can I email my assignment to and have it done by Monday? :lol ok, just kidding I actually want to learn this stuff.
