View Full Version : Parliamentary v.s. presidential system

This is a discussion I have had for years with various people. From my perspective as someone who has always grown up in a presidential system, countries with parliamentary democracies have always looks a lot better to me. But I've talked with people who grew up in those systems (Britain and Israel, mostly) and they have just as many complaints about their system of government as I do about mine, albeit different complaints.

A brief journey into Wikipedia turned up this interesting quote about one advantage of the parliamentary system:

"In addition to quicker legislative action, Parliamentarianism has attractive features for nations that are ethnically, racially, or ideologically divided."

Which, I have to say, defines our country quite well. And I don't see it getting better - I see it only deepening.

I wonder whether a parliamentary system would end the 2-party charade of running to the far right/far left base, and then running back to the middle again.
