Its a sad day gang. I've just recieved my red ring of death and it seems my time is up.

I've started the disassembly process after saying my goodbyes to family and friends. The white casing is off and I've broken the microsoft seal voiding any warranty I might have had. I was frustrated and upset. I probably should have thought about boxing it up and sending if off but my inner green took over and I begun to thrash on it as the rest of my family cleared the room and remained silent as I turned my living room, dining room and kitchen into a disaster area of rage.

I'm picking up the torx bits to remove the metal casing and get to the hard drive. Once I'm there what do I need to do. I need answers gang because I can't seem to find directions on what to do without paying 30 bucks for some kind of ebook that walks me through it. I can solder if I have to I just need to know where to solder.

If I have to purchase a new unit can I remove my hard drive and install it in the system? Is there a formatting process involved? Is the red ring of death a result of a fucked up hard drive?

I've set up a paypal to take donations due to the fact that I've been informed by the wife that I will not be accessing the savings for my addiction.

Contact me for paypal donation addy.

I'll leave with a moment of sadness...

I'll rest my head tonight, thoughts I can't reveal.
The shame inside of me, the fate they've tried to seal.

If you could use your hands, what would you use them for?
Would it be to strangle me, or just try to ignore,

The fact that they don't care, why they stop and stare?
Why they put you in that dusty dirty chair?

Everyday is hard, hard for you to survive.
While we maintain this materialistic paradise.

Oh XBOX ? .... Don't know anything about one of those, but I've heard things about wrapping it in towels. This could either fix it or mess i up worse.

Since you broke the warranty sticker, This is the only other fix I know that suppose to work, The towel trick just buys you some time days to a week maybe.

I'm going to remove the heatsink and reset the chip. I'll install some washers between the heat sink and motherboard to keep it from vibrating. I'm to understand that the red ring of death is due to the heatsink vibrating the graphics processor loose.

I hear the towel trick can do some serious damage.

The RRoD is variant in its reasoning. There are entire websites dedicated to just such problems, ranging from a vibrating heatsink (in which, the towel trick "works"), to faulty soldering between mainboard and processor (in which, you need a steady hand and the right grade of stick) to plain-old unaccounted for, random problem inside a hastily designed and manufactured electronic component.

The actual "Red Rings" are just a default system error that Microsoft uses to tell the end-user that there has been a very critical hardware error. You can get the RRoDs by simply turning off your 360, unplugging the VGA cord, and turning it back on. Because, in effect, not having a means to output a video signal is a critical hardware error (no matter how easy it is to actually "fix").

My point is, drop a line to these sites.

http://www.xbox360rally.com/the-red-ring-of-deathcure-found/

And here is a step by step instruction (.pdf file) to repair a particular problem. You must determine if this is the EXACT nature of your issue before attempting!

http://www.martin-smt.de/pdfs/div/xbox_manncorpr.pdf

And here is a video as well.

Yep they sent the same one back. They repaired it pretty quick too. But for some reason it's louder.

No work was done, they just put the fan on high to keep it cooler. No overheating = No RoD :lol

I actually think they cleaned the fan and dust out, it had that clean smell to it when I took it out of the box.

might as well throw some thermal paste on the chip while you're at it, if it was an overheating problem. it's cheap.

If you end up buying a new one and don't care about the HDMI, don't buy an elite or premium. Buy an arcade model and then buy a 120 GB hard drive for it. Essentially, it'll be an elite for about $50.00 less.

I was in a fit of rage. So I started taking the thing apart. Its not like I had a reciept or anything either. Fuck it I'm going to try and fix it tonight and if I can't I'm just going to have to borrow some money from Jim or CC.

I took everything apart and the chip was set fine. I cleaned everything off and the system actually boots up now. The fans are extremely noisy and after a minute or so I get two red rings on the left and it shuts off.

Looks like I'm gonna have to get a new one.
