Any society that has millions of citizens proudly subscribing to an extremist philosophy that "greed is good" and "deficits don't matter" is bound to experience something like this.
The most obvious problem is that most experts in government behave like timid child who are either afraid to criticize or limited in their ability to criticize obvious problems. Past Surgeon Generals from both political parties have complained about this too-- despite being the highest ranking doctors in our society, they can't straightforwardly tell children not to drink too much Pepsi or eat too much McDonalds... that might offend money interests and some profits. The irony now of course is that the supposedly leading financial minds in America, wasteful hubristic folks who live in mansions and own a dozen cars and have lots of wealth safely tucked away for their own retirement years, will now ask and receive billions of dollars in corporate welfare. They are free market survival of the fittest capitalists when making profits, and simple socialists when they suddenly find themselves financially in the red.
