I've been around long enough to know that the Redskins and Cowboys always defy the predictions and the betting lines, no matter how good or how bad either team is. The Cowboys have looked pretty good so far, but I wouldn't be shocked to see the Cowboys go out and lose by 24 because neither team intimidates each other. There just isn't any way to know what's going to happen.

they actually played pretty well last year in Dallas. but got burned by TO deep 3 times - that was their first game without Sean Taylor, and Reed Doughty (who would eventually play solid, if unspectacular football) got torched in his first start.

the jason taylor injury may not hurt as bad as it would against some other teams. with him and carter starting, the team has been a bit weak against the run. demetric evans is much more stout at the point of attack, and gives them a better shot at slowing down Barber. On the other hand, he's almost no threat to get to Romo, but that's the trade-off.

eh, but you still got a QB - as damn good as he is - who is capable of giving the other team the ball 4 times in a given week.

the cowboys are clearly the class of the league right now, but they are far from unbeatable. Philly - who I'm not completely sold on - made a lot of mistakes in that Monday game and still had an excellent opportunity to walk out of Dallas with the win. (Not to insinuate the Cowboys played flawlessly, only that they are definitely beatable in a given week.)

Maybe, but it's also possible that if the Redskins score 31 it's because they were down 42-10 and started throwing the ball to try to catch up and started drawing lots of PI calls. I'm not sure about Dallas' secondary, but it'll take a heck of an effort to run on them. What's hurt them this year seems to be the short pass. What works for the Redskins against them is the long pass.

This from a secondary that has utilized two rookies, a rusty Pacman, and a rusty and recovering Newman. They've been damn solid and had a great game against the Packers.

You have to understand their coverage schemes. They aren't a bump and run, press and jam secondary. They don't have the personnel to do that, so their defensive schemes are going to be to play off the receivers and cover. They're going to play you to have to take the short passes and have to sustain long drives. So far they have been getting better each game and turned in a nearly masterful performance against the Packers (Rodgers had almost nothing through the air until the game was sealed at 27-9 and the Cowboys went prevent) after a nearly flawless second half against the Eagles. The Cowboys had 4 sacks on McNabb and 5 on Rodgers, and most of those were coverage sacks. The secondary is night and day better at this point than last season, and with Pacman and Newman losing rust by the game while the rookies get much needed experience there is no reason to think they won't improve game to game.

I was referencing the secondary being much improved over last year's, which had many lapses per game. I still have images of Reeves, Nate Jones, and Roy Williams being burned. They still have room for improvement, but since the start of the second half of the Philly game they have been lights out against two very good offenses who torched other teams.

I don't know much about Washington's secondary, but we'll find out how good they are on Sunday.

they held boldin/fitzgerald in check most of the day on sunday - save for a long TD pass to Fitzgerald. Boldin had a TD as well, but it came when AZ spread the field at the goal line.

from a coverage perspective, washington has got quality depth at corner and the best safety in the division in laron landry (now that brian dawkins is finally experiencing a drop-off). the question is always at the other safety spot. doughty is solid, but not a great athlete (by NFL safety standards) and horton is a great athlete, but very raw.

it would be flat out scary how good that safety tandem could have become if not for Taylor's untimely demise.

Me neither, because I've been watching them give up short passes all the way down the field until they get inside the red zone where they hold teams to field goals because the run defense is so good and the secondary doesn't have to worry about getting beat deep. I know they've improved from last year, but that ain't saying much, and I don't think they have a single interception. How many has Derek Anderson thrown against teams not called the Dallas Cowboys?

I also have a hard time with your suggestion that those were coverage sacks when a cornerback got two of them in the Green Bay game. The defensive line is wearing the other team down, and the secondary's playing bend but don't break with some successful blitzes toward the end of the game. It's working so far but it isn't going to last if they don't improve.

That's their strategy to give up short passes down the field and make teams string together long drives with a lot of successful plays, banking on the defense getting negative plays here and there to stop drives. This just isn't a matchup bump and run, blitz heavy defense that's going to either shut you down or get toasted like the Eagles. It's designed to stop the run and make you throw short.

I also dont think the D is going to get many interceptions simply because the corners are better coverage guys than opportunistic ball hogs. Pac and Newman have no history of racking up interceptions, Henry had one good stretch last year and that's it, and we dont know about Jenkins or Scandrick yet. Also, none of the safeties have a history of being big interception guys. That's just the design of this defense and the way it beat Rodgers on Sunday is going to be the way it beats people all year if it is to be successful.

Also, the sacks Henry got came off of what the Cowboys call their "Cowboy" defense, which is a nickel except the 4th corner comes in for a safety (Roy or now Watkins) instead of a LB. That allows 4 LBs to remain on the field to stay stout against the run while having an extra corner in Henry to rush the QB if desired while still keeping 3 CBs and Hamlin to cover. On both sacks the coverage took away any routes long enough to allow Henry to get to Rodgers on a wide corner rush. Definitely stuff they couldnt do last year due to weak corner depth.

I think they've been lucky so far, as some of the secondary guys look so bad that it's amazing they're on a professional team. So far it's working though, and the Cowboys defense hasn't worn down despite being on the field a long time. The offense's decision to run down the throat of the Packers was probably deliberate to keep the defense off the field. Again, time will tell if it holds. I'm not impressed, particularly considering how hyped the secondary was before the season.

The offense ran down the throat of the Packers because the Packers were playing a lot of nickel and on times they didn't they were using their safeties and usually one LB in coverage blanketing TO and Witten. It shows the maturity of Garrett as a play caller to recognize this and run the ball against a defensive front looking to stop the pass. Those draws, misdirection runs, and delayed hand offs were a thing of beauty keeping the safeties back and allowing the line to tear open the front seven and sometimes six. Garrett's coming into his own now that he's had a year to get acquainted with his fancy toy.

Cowboys looked impressive against Green Bay. DeMarcus Ware is a beast in obvious passing situations. Redskins will need to stay somewhat balanced to keep the Cowboy defense guessing. They are passing much more in Zorn's westcoast offense, so you can expect Washington to throw it early and often. And if the Cowboy secondary doesn't press, I like the Skins chances in the passing game. Moss can use his speed to get to open spots in the second level of their defense. But that's if they don't press and bump. I would be surprised if the Cowboys let Moss and Randel El run free off the line.

The one thing Jason Campbell is getting better at are his reads. Against the Giants, it seemed like he was holding the ball too long and paying the price. Now, it seems like he's more in rhythm in the quick passing game. And if he can complete a high percentage and keep the chains moving, the Skins have a chance. He's not McNabb but he is playing well.

As for the Skins defense against Romo and Company, they have their hands full. Their offense is so balanced, it's difficult to take away things. They have too many playmakers on that side of the ball. The Redskins should blitz every down from every spot on the field because they are going to give up points anyway. Be aggressive and force the issue. If they play that bend and don't break defense, counting on their secondary to cover, that's a slow death, imo. Without Jason Taylor, you need to manufacture pressure somehow.

And if the Redskins really want a chance to steal this game, they need to make some plays on special teams. But you can say that about any of the games on Sunday so you really can't count on it.

I don't think it's going to be a blowout. I just hope Washington is in striking distance in the 4th quarter. This game is going to be physical like they usually are between these two teams. It will be fun to watch and I can't wait.

Good point on Thomas. He showed some flashes last week now that he is finally healthy. Not the least of which was breaking loose for a 70 yard TD that was called back on a penalty that didn't affect the play at all.

I would agree and I think there is more respect for the Redskins and Giants from Cowboys Fans than for the Eagles. When Tom Landry died there were tributes from NY and Washington. Philly is known best for booing Santa Claus and cheering possibly paralyzed opposing players.

For the Skins to be a threat, Campbell is going to have to make some plays downfield with Cooley and Moss. Santana has had some of his best games as a Skin against Dallas - as a Redskin at Texas Stadium: 3 games, 18 receptions, 349 yards, 3 TD.

Hopefully it will be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the team has been known to lay an egg in some of these early season games, then sneak in the backdoor at the end while everyone is sleeping on them. (there's a couple of puns built in there, but it's too late in the evening for me to care...)

the only times I've ever seen TO get alligator arms involved Taylor roaming the middle in his vicinity.

laron's a big hitter, but he's just not the physical specimen that Taylor was. Taylor would have never gotten trucked over like Landry did by Brandon Jacobs - and I'm not sure Jacobs would have even tried to do it to #21. Landry's just not as physically imposing as the guy who had the speed of a corner, but the size of a linebacker.

On the other hand, Landry is much smarter than Taylor was at this age - he's rarely out of position and he knows when to go for the big hit vs. just making the tackle.

Amazingly, the Redskins lost the best safety in the division and replaced him with...the best safety in the division. But man, it would have been amazing to watch them both out there for the next 5-10 years. No matter what highs or lows the team hits over the next decade, there will certainly be a large 'what might have been' factor regarding ST.

actually, i would have agreed with you COMPLETELY before the season. but dawkins is clearly a step slower this year. he's 35, it was bound to happen at some point. nonetheless - he's still a very competent player that has to be accounted for out there. but landry is playing better football right now.

and there's no doubt that taylor was the best safety in the division last year before his death. outside of maybe bob sanders, he was probably the best safety in football. because he was such a big hitter, people don't seem to realize how good in coverage taylor was.

Cowboys game plan very similar as last week. Be able to run Barber and Felix against 7 man fronts and force skins to bring Landry up leaving either TO or Witten in single coverage with no help. Then burn them.

Defense needs to control run with front 7 leaving 2 deep on Moss and Cooley.

Dominate in special teams, especially against one of leagues weakest punt coverage teams.

Yeah, that kid is really a good manager of the game. He doesn't knock your socks off but he's smart, knows his personnel and makes really good decisions. Again, there are a number of things I'm disappointed about but don't want to sound like I'm taking away from a well-played game by the skins. Taking advantage of your opponent's mistakes is a part of the game.

I think it was Cris Collinsworth who pointed out that Owens had 1 out of every three plays going to him in this game. That he would bitch is shocking, even for him. It's possible that someone asked a question that was designed to get that kind of answer and sound bad when they played just the sound bite.
