Yesterday I opened up "word" to type a proposal and my task bar was gone (including the "file, edit, view, etc, at the top) and my default settings had changed...All I could see was the document itself...I could type the document but couldn't do anything with it...I've done the usual...restart, etc. but it's still screwed up...

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

did you right click on the top of the task bar to see a drop down menu of bars available?

CosmicCowboy

right clicking just gives me cut, copy, past, fonts, paragraph, bullets, close...in separate windows if I click them, but nothing about task bar...

Shelly

I've done that with Windows' task bar. Is it just in Word?

Yes...the other office applications still have the task bar and the rest of the stuff at the top..

if you hit the Alt key... do the menu options appear again?

Shelly

the only thing I can think is that maybe the taskbar were dragged or something. There's 2 parallel lines that you can grab to drag the taskbar. I'm not sure how to explain it better.

Try deleting Normal.dot (do a search for it), close Word first of course.

It will be rebuilt next time you start Word.

I know this works for a similar issue with Excel. In Excel you delete the "normal.dot" equivalent to restore the default settings (including toolbars).

phyzik

sounds like you might be in full screen. Try pressing Alt+V then "U" to take you out of full screen. Deleting normal.dot may do it to but you will lose any custom settings you had.

Normal.dot can be found in C:\Documents and settings\"profile"\application data\microsoft\templates

"profile" is whatever your computer login is.

also, application data is a hidden folder. You will need to click on Tools > Folder Options > click on the View Tab > select the option for show hidden files and folders.

"print screen" button is on your keyboard.

I don't have any buttons.

do you mean the print screen button? its on your keyboard

i dont know if you have full screen on in word. that will take everything away and leave a white screen with a cursor to type. if you move the mouse cursor all the way to the top of the screen, it should give you a menu bar with "file" "edit" etc etc. you should then be able to click "view" then "full screen" to turn it off. if it isnt that, i have no idea what the problem is

CC, with all the time you have invested in this so far, you could have hopped on a horse, headed into town, picked up a new machine at the ol' general store, and headed back out to the ranch, set up and been done! You earn like $700/hr right? Big savings.

Not yet...No offense but I was hoping to get confirmation from someone else that this was correct and wouldn't hurt anything...there are people on here that would intentionally give bad advice so that I would screw up my computer just so they could laugh about it...

Normal.dot is OK to delete, but you will lose any customization you had made. If in doubt just rename it to normal.old. A new normal.dot will be created though.

OK, deleted normal.dot and that didn't fix it.

which directory did you delete it from? tell us the full path. You may have deleted it from another profile such as "all users" or didnt go into the application data folder, which is hidden.

do this, click start and then click on Search.

Select "all files and folders"

when it changes screens click on "More advanced options" and put a check next to "search hidden files and folders" then do a search for normal.dot

Any file it finds called normal.dot go ahead and delete. Word is the only program that uses that file so dont worry about it. Make sure when you delete it that Word is closed. After you delete it, relaunch Word again.

I did it from advanced search and clicked all the file boxes, found it and deleted.

Restoring to a week ago finally fixed it.

Thanks, guys.
