View Full Version : Let the debate begin - VH1 crowns 'Fight the Power' as best hip-hop song

:hat From my old school.

NEW YORK - Let the debates begin: VH1 has compiled its list of the 100 greatest hip-hop songs, and Public Enemy's black power anthem "Fight the Power" tops the list.

The cable channel will count down its list in series of shows starting Monday. At No. 2 is the Sugar Hill Gang's groundbreaking song, "Rapper's Delight," followed by Dr. Dre's "Nuthin but a 'G' Thang" at No. 3. Run-D.M.C.'s "Walk This Way" with Aerosmith and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five's "The Message" round out the top five.

Salt 'N Pepa was the only female act in the top 10, with their early hit "Push It." Two of rap's biggest names — Jay-Z and Eminem — didn't make the top 10, though they are in the top 20.

Other acts on the list include the Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Biz Markie, Black Sheep and J.J. Fad.

The list comes as VH1 prepares to honor the pioneers in rap once again as part of its annual Hip-Hop Honors show, which this year celebrates Slick Rick, De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Naughty by Nature and Too Short. That show airs Oct. 6.

Fight The Power is a decent pick.

Hail Mary would be my #1 if there was a way to erase the Outlawz from the song. That goes for a lot of Tupac songs really.

I could live with Hail Mary. They probably didn't want too many Pac songs in the top 10 or so, otherwise it would probably take up a 4th of the top 10 for me

You don't know hip-hop. 3rd Bass was one of the best crews from the east coast in the late 80s - early 90s. Pop Goes the Weasel was far from their best song though. Words of Wisdom, Gas Face, Steppin' To The A.M., and MC Serge's solo Here it Comes are a few that come to mind. The Cactus Album was a classic.

If it's anything like VH1's other televised lists, the station doesn't actually put them together or determine their order. All VH1 does is compile and tabulate the information that comes in from various other industry sources -- musicians, critics, writers, etc. Sometimes viewers, too.

Granted, the list is crap. In both ranking and content. But I don't know how much of the blame VH1 can actually take for that fact.

Seriously, this list is bullshit

Hard Knock Life? WTF? Jay-Z's greatest song is unquestionably D'evils to anyone who knows hip-hop

One Love by Nas? That's one of the two or three weakest tracks on Illmatic. Memory Lane, Halftime, Life's a Bitch, and so on were far superior. Also, how is any list not going to have Live at the BBQ from Main Source's Breaking Atoms album? Nas dropped what is probably the greatest verse ever put on wax to open that track.

Streets disciple, my rap's a trifle
I shoot 'em out my brain like a slug from a rifle
Stampede. I leave the microphone split.
Play Mr. Tuffy like I'm on some Pretty Tone shit.
Verbal assassin; my architect pleases.
When I was 12, I went to hell for snuffin' Jesus.
Nasty Nas is a rebel to America.
Police murderer, I'm causing hysteria.
My troops roll up with a strange force.
I was trapped in a cage and let out by the Main Source.
Swimmin' in women like a lifeguard.
Put on a bulletproof; nigga I strike hard.
Kidnap the President's wife without a plan,
And hanging niggas like the Ku Klux Klan.
I melt mics till the sound waves over.
Before stepping to me you rather step to Jehova.
Slamming MCs to the cement,
Cause verbally, I'm iller than an AIDS patient.
I move swift and uplift
Your mind shoot the gift when I riff in rhyme
Rappin sniper, speakin real words.
My thoughts react, like Steven Spielberg's.
Poetry attacks, paragraphs punch hard.
My brain is insane, I'm out to lunch God.
Science is dropped, my raps are toxic.
My voice box locks and excels like a rocket.

Also, Fight the Power is a terrible pick for #1. It was a good song with a great video, but Rebel Without a Pause, Public Enemy #1, She Watches Channel Zero, 911 is a Joke, You're Gonna Get Yours, Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos, Can't Truss It, Welcome to the Terrordome, and By the Time I Get to Arizona are all right there with Fight the Power among PE's best tracks.

i am very disturbed, upon further reflection, by the only Outkast song mentioned being BOB. While a good song, they have at least 10, possibly 15 better ones. I'm really shocked they just didn't put that POS Miss Jackson on there instead, but that's another matter. Since they are pretty much the premier duo to come out in the last 15 YEARS, this is beyond comprehension.

Maybe not the best lyracist hands down, but definately the best song maker. People liked pac because his songs had meaning and you could really feel what he was trying to say. Dear momma, changes, starin through my rearview, life goes on, letter to my unborn child, etc are all classics.

As far as true lyracists go, some people won't agree/don't like his style, but as far as lyrics go and putting together the most complex syllables eminem is probably the best ever. /hate on

Except for pac and eminem share the 1 and 2 spots in all time record sales, despite both having relatively short careers. Eminems career kicked off in 99 with the Slim Shady lp and he retired in 04 with Encore. (which sucked terribly)
Tupac hit it big in 91 and was shot 5 years later. Pretty impressive to sell that many records while being in the limelight for such a short timespan.

After further thought, I'm going to back off my earlier statement of Pac being overrated.

Brenda's Got a Baby is probably the deepest song Pac ever wrote. It's got a pretty chilling ending when he finishes it off with the line "She's got a baby" after telling how Brenda's life fell apart.

Wl54ABY8VgY

I can't get into all the Pac stuff put out after his death. I love 2Pac's work too much for me to accept anything that he didn't have control over. I know 7-Day Theory came out posthumously, but it was like 2 months after his death and was pretty clearly his work first and foremost.
