Malone to retire in Utah as NBA's No. 2 all-time scorer

Feb. 11, 2005
SportsLine.com wire reports

SALT LAKE CITY -- Karl Malone is retiring, ending a career in which he became one of the NBA's greatest power forwards and was No. 2 on the league's all-time scoring list.

Malone, who teamed with guard John Stockton for 18 seasons with Utah to form one of the NBA's greatest duos, will announce his retirement Sunday at the Delta Center, the Jazz said Friday.

The 41-year-old Malone underwent knee surgery last summer and has not played since last season with the Los Angeles Lakers. He joined the Lakers at a greatly reduced salary before last season in an attempt to win an elusive NBA championship by playing with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. Detroit beat Los Angeles in the NBA Finals in five games.

The Jazz had no comment Friday on the decision by Malone, whose agent said last week it was possible Malone might return to action with San Antonio.

The Lakers were not surprised.

"We've had one year with him and everyone in the organization, from the front office staff, fellow players, coaches, everyone really enjoyed having Karl around for that year," Lakers spokesman John Black said. "He was a real addition to our team last year in helping us get to the NBA playoffs."

Malone finishes his career 1,459 points behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the NBA's career scoring list.

Last season, he missed 39 games after injuring his right knee, and was hurt again during the playoffs, missing the last three games of the NBA Finals.

Malone opted out of his $1.65 million contract following last season, making him a free agent. He and his family live in nearby Newport Beach, Calif. They also have a home in Salt Lake City.

His agent, Dwight Manley, said in October that his client wasn't ready to play, but if he returned, it would only be with the Lakers.

That changed late last year after Malone was accused by Kobe Bryant of making a pass at Bryant's wife. Malone, through Manley, denied the accusation and apologized to Bryant and his wife for any remarks she might have considered inappropriate.

NEW: Malone to retire from NBA
Web Posted: 02/11/2005 12:38 PM CST

Johnny Ludden
Express-News Staff Writer

Karl Malone will announce his retirement at a news conference Sunday in Salt Lake City, an NBA spokesman said today.

Malone had been debating whether to sign with the Spurs for the remainder of the season.

Tim Frank, the NBA’s vice president of basketball communications, said Malone will make his retirement official on Sunday.

Malone met with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and Tim Duncan on Saturday in San Antonio. He said he enjoyed the visit, but still needed to gauge whether he was emotionally and physically ready to resume his career.

Popovich was unavailable for comment this morning.

The Jazz also announced the news conference will be at 3 p.m. at the Delta Center.

The Jazz issued a press release and the NBA spokesman said it, so I don't think Malone can change his mind now. Obviously he's made the decision. The broadcaster in Utah who had his story all over the place this morning about Malone signing with SA obviously has bad sources.

Malone's camp caught wind of that other article saying Malone to sign with the Spurs. They new they needed to do something else to keep Malone's name in the spotlight. Now they have everyone thinking Malone will retire ... but as he's ready to cross the I's and dot the T's on his retirement papers he's going to put on his superman cape and fly to San Antonio to save the struggling Spurs and carry them to a championship.

Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY -- Karl Malone is retiring, ending a career in which he became one of the NBA's greatest power forwards and was No. 2 on the league's all-time scoring list.

Malone

Malone, who teamed with guard John Stockton for 18 seasons with Utah to form one of the NBA's greatest duos, will announce his retirement Sunday, the Jazz said Friday.

Malone, who is 41 and underwent knee surgery last summer, is healthy and works out every day but has not played since last season with the Los Angeles Lakers. He joined the Lakers in an attempt to win an elusive NBA championship, but failed to do so despite playing with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.

Malone will announce his exit at a news conference at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.

His agent, Dwight Manley, said Malone was "very serious" about returning to action with the San Antonio Spurs before he decided to retire.

"I can tell you he's given a tremendous amount of thought to this decision, but the specific details are best left to him to make on Sunday," Manley said.

The Jazz did not elaborate on the announcement. Speaking to reporters at the Delta Center before Friday's game against Minnesota, coach Jerry Sloan called Malone "a unique individual and I'm glad I got the opportunity to coach him."

Malone is the second-leading scorer in NBA history, 1,459 points behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He played 18 seasons for Utah before joining the Lakers for the 2003-04 season at a greatly reduced salary, saying he wanted to win a championship before retirement.

He missed 39 games last season after injuring his right knee, and was hurt again during the playoffs, missing the last three games of the NBA Finals, all of which the Lakers lost to the Detroit Pistons.

Lakers spokesman John Black said Malone's retirement was no surprise.

"We wish him and his family the best ever. We've had one year with him and everyone in the organization, from the front office staff, fellow players, coaches, everyone really enjoyed having Karl around for that year," Black said. "He was a real addition to our team last year in helping us get to the NBA playoffs."

Malone opted out of his $1.65 million contract after last season, making him a free agent. He and his family have homes in Newport Beach, Calif., and Salt Lake City.

Malone was a key factor in the Lakers' victories over the Spurs in last year's Western Conference semifinals and Minnesota in the conference finals.

Manley had said in October that his client wasn't ready to play but that if he returned, it would only be with the Lakers.

That changed late last year after Malone was accused by Kobe Bryant of making a pass at his wife. Malone, through Manley, denied the accusation and apologized to Bryant and his wife for any remarks she might have considered inappropriate.

Stockton, who with Malone formed the famed pick-and-roll tandem, retired after the 2002-03 season.

This doesn't surprise me one bit. I had this feeling he wasn't going to come. He wanted a ring but would he be willing to become known as the hall of famer who became a 30 game mercenary to get a title after being a 1 season mercenary the year before and failing? His legacy is Utah and when the Lakers lost last season and when he couldn't make up his mind this season, all the indecisiveness was just too much for him to play for another team. And I feel that in his eyes, maybe it wouldn't have been such a "legitimate" title if he wasn't in some way leading the team to victory. He tried it once, and it failed. I don't think he wanted to have that possibility of failing again.

Malone, who teamed with Dennis Rodman for 18 matches with the WWE to form one of the WWE's greatest duos, will announce his retirement Sunday at the Delta Center, the WWE said Friday.

The 41-year-old Malone underwent knee surgery last summer and has not wrestled since last season with the WWE. He joined the wrestling league at a greatly reduced salary before last season in an attempt to win an elusive WWE championship by playing with The Big Show and The Rock. The WWE beat WCW for the wrestling championship in five matches.

The WWE had no comment Friday on the decision by Malone, whose agent said last week it was possible Malone might return to action with LMGHA(Little Mexican Girl Hunting Assoc.)

The WWE was not surprised.

"We've had one year with him and everyone in the organization, from the front office staff, fellow players, coaches, everyone really enjoyed having Karl around for that year," WWE spokesman John Black said. "He was a real addition to our team last year in helping us get to the WWE championships."

Malone finishes his career 1,459 punchs behind Rick Flair on the WWE's career scoring list.

Many congratulations to Karl Malone on his first of what will probably be several retirements. After stringing the press, Laker fans, Spurs fans and Heat fans along with daily indecision on whether or not you would be rejoining the league, you have finally come to this week's conclusion that you are closing the book on a long and... long career.

Your impact on the game was always clear... from your college days when you ended the career of Rice center Dave Ramer to the prime of your career where anyone who stood in your path (for instance Isiah Thomas and David Robinson) could expect to pay with a visit to the hospital. And we cannot forget the "Twilight Period" of your career (1999-2004) when you fought the injustices you faced under owner Larry H. Miller in Utah.

You may be retired for now, but your legacy remains. Every time a muscle-bound behemoth falls to the ground after being grazed by a point guard, we will think of you. Every time a defender is called for a foul for being kicked in the shins while guarding a jump shot, we will remember you. Every time a team stacked with four Hall of Famers fails to win a Championship, you will be in our minds.

I hope your retirement is fulfilling, whatever you decide to do - whether it be hunting, wrestling professionally, or hinting at a possible comeback. And may you have no trouble finding someone to carry you along in every venture, as you have for the last 20 years.

Instant Classic.

This is the best news of the entire season. Fuck Malone. I'm sure he'll eventually change his mind again but he can find some other team to put up with the drama queen bullshit.

Pop fucked up for even entertaining his shit at this stage of the game. Now we get to read headlines like "Malone spurns Spurs" and worry about whether this fucking distraction has any affect on the rest of team.

Enjoy watching us win the title bitch and wondering what could have been. Maybe Shaq will let you "kiss the rings", just make sure to wipe his man-seed off your mouth first.

I for one would've liked to have Malone on the Spurs roster. He would've given them more depth and would've been a bruiser under the basket. You can say all you wnat about Malone and his elbows, but this guy wanted to win a ring real bad, so I think he would've done anything to make it happen.

Yes I know it's hard to forget about the elbows and all the dirty stuff he did to "our" Spurs, but I think Malone still could've played 15-20 minutes a game and contribute. I'm looking at this from a basketball point of view.

I just hope all the people who didnt want Malone arent bitching if we lose in the Finals to Shaq/Zo MIA!

Personally, I still think we will win it all. Malone woulda been nice, but Im not complaining. Ive always said that wed win it alll either way. I woulda liked to have Malone, but we are still OK.

Thank fuck for that. Happy days.

Malone never wanted to be in San Antonio - for the fans, for the team or for the town.

All he wanted was to be here for himselfas we are the best option for a ring with 30-odd games left in the season to get an easy ring.

Fuck off Karla. :drunk :drunk :drunk

I support the Spurs with Malone or without him but I can't quite figure out why some Spurs worry about Zo signing with the Heat. I'd be suprised if he could finish out the season.
