Los Angeles Clippers point guard Jason Williams announced his retirement from the NBA today, ending his 10-year career. Signed by the Clippers as a free agent on August 7, 2008, Williams did not appear in a game for Los Angeles.

Williams enjoyed a 10-year NBA career that saw him take the court for three different teams, (Sacramento 1998-2001, Memphis 2001-2005 and Miami 2005-2008). A member of the NBA Champion Miami Heat in 2005-06, Williams started all 23 playoff games and averaged 9.3 points and 3.9 assists for Miami in helping to win the organization’s first title.

The West Virginia native leaves the NBA with career averages of 11.4 points, 6.3 assists, 1.3 steals, 2.4 rebounds while shooting 39.6 percent from the floor, 32.5 percent from three-point range and 81.6 percent from the foul line in 679 total games. Williams finishes his career with a 2.77 assist-to-turnover ratio.

He enjoyed his best statistical season in 2001-02 when he averaged 14.8 points, 8.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds for Memphis. In his four seasons with the Grizzlies, Williams became the club’s all-time assists leader and all-time leader in three-point field goals attempted in addition to being named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for the 2002-03 season by Sports Illustrated when he finished tied for second in the league in assists per game.

Clippers Sign Free Agent Guard Jason Williams


The Los Angeles Clippers today signed free agent guard Jason Williams, according to Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

Some kinda BS is definately going on here. Maybe it's just that he doesn't want to play for that moron Dunleavy in Clipperland. Could also be the attraction of the Euro's too as Jamstone said above.

Jason Williams still has one of the highest assist to turnover ratio’s of any point guard in the league, he is a very good outside shooter and can play both the flashy up tempo game, or as he proved in Miami, the slower half court game. At this point in his career J-Will has mentioned several times his willingness to come off the bench, and given Baron Davis’ history with injuries, Baylor may have just hedged his bets perfectly by signing a back-up point guard who is still good enough to start on most NBA ball clubs. On a bit of a separate note, I would assume that the signing of Williams signals the end of any hope some fans may have had that the Clippers would resign free agent Shaun Livingston who is trying to make a comeback to the hardwood after the very serious leg injury that has been ‘YouTubed’ to death.

I heard from several different sources early today that Maccabi Tel Aviv (http://www.maccabi.co.il/MaccabiTheTeam2.Asp?Year=2008&language=english) was in talks with none other than the Miami Heat's unrestricted free agent point guard Jason Williams. (In fact, Wikipedia already lists Williams on the Maccabi roster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maccabi_Tel_Aviv_B.C.). UPDATE: Silly me, Maccabi has another Jason Williams, who plays forward.)
His agent Dan Tobin confirms the talks are on.
"In the current climate," he says, "you have to take these offers seriously."
So, is this a negotiating ploy to encourage an NBA team to offer more? Or is there really a chance White Chocolate is going overseas?
Williams, according to Tobin, has been overseas only when the Memphis Grizzlies played preseason games in Europe.
I asked Tobin what his best guess was as to where Jason Williams would play. "No guess," he said. "I don't want to speculate. But we're listening, we're patient, and we're looking for something specific."
Tobin says that, more than money, Williams' biggest priority is to win.
Maccabi Tel Aviv's roster is one of the best in the Euroleague, and features former lottery picks Marcus Fizer and Rodney White, as well as upcoming players like Omri Casspi. Last season, the team won a major pre-season tournament, and made the finals (but lost) in the Euroleague Finals, the Israeli State Cup, and the Israeli League Final.
Many basketball veterans tell me that there is no country that is easier for American basketball players to adjust to than Israel.
Tobin's client, former Net Tamar Slay, played in Jerusalem, and Tobin says the lifestyle was magnificent. "You are in a different country. But there are high-rises, there are beaches, everyone speaks English. Most of the things you see as you go through your day are things that you are used to seeing in America," Tobin says. Not to mention, "you get an apartment and a car, and the team takes care of the taxes."
Tobin says he is talking to NBA teams -- he won't say which ones -- and has heard from several overseas organizations. "But Maccabi Tel Aviv reached out," he explains, and of the international teams, Tobin says "that's the one I'm particularly focused on."
