What's the youngest age to see it, where you'd have a chance of understanding it, regardless of the R rating?

I was going to the midnight showings at the River Oaks theatre in Houston right after starting high school. That movie cracks me up every time.

I rented this shit when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, back when I rented new scary movies every friday, and when I popped it in I was so confused as to how something so gay was supposed to be scary. I had no choice but to stop the movie and put in the next movie I had rented.

It wasn't until I saw some of it on comedy central or something when I was 13 or so that I realized it wasn't supposed to be scary.

17.
Absolutely a terrible movie.
Only thing that was even remotely interesting when I went to see it is that I went with a group who had a somewhat similar "act" for the original "Dawn of the Dead", and we put our own spin on it.
The drunk guys down the front spoiling it for all the regulars that were there made it somewhat tolerable as well, but otherwise that movie is one of the worst films ever.

I don't think I've ever seen it. We used to go to the midnight showing of The Song Remains The Same instead.

I completely understood it. But, I was the kind of kid who hung out with adults and had parents that didn't do much shielding, so all of its subversive themes were far from new or shocking to me. I don't know that sheltered suburban kids would get it at 10 or 11 years old. My younger half-sisters probably wouldn't have.

I was invited by a co-worker to go catch a screening of it at the old Central Park Fox theater behind the mall, they showed it on weekends at like midnight or something. Not sure exactly how old I was, but somewhere between 20 and 22. One friend got up and left she thought it was so terrible, the other swore the whole movie she could see Tim Curry's pubes and was gonna puke.

It was fun though, before the show they picked a 'virgin' (i.e. someone who had never been there) to 'sacrifice' and sing to, and they all had a roll of toilet paper to throw when they uttered the "Great Scott!" line. I feel sorry for whoever had to clean the theater when they were through each night.

Thanks guys. It seems like we've got an assortment of haven't seen it, don't want to see it, and didn't like it. Then we've got people who saw it at an age more in line with the 'R' rating.

This is what I was looking for. The age you saw it and if you 'got' it. The 'R' rating tells us something, but today's kids get exposed to a lot of stuff earlier than kids that grew up without the net and cable TV did.

I'm leaning towards Funt's thoughts. It depends on the kid as well as the age. If the kid has adults they talk to it makes a big difference.

I have watched only parts of it because I can't stand musicals. Although for some reasons I always try and watch them but i get bored and annoyed and watch something else. I would much rather go outside and wait for something to get caught in a spider web than watch stuff like that. The only musical I have been able to watch all the way through is Grease. I did not really like that movie either but somehow I watched the whole thing. I would think there is some other musicals but I can't think of any. I think I almost watched all of dreamgirls but still did not finish it.
