HAMILTON, Ohio -- An Ohio teenager is fighting for his right to wear makeup at school, but school leaders said it's a distraction.
"They're gender stereotyping. He's being sexually discriminated against. Nowhere in the rules does it say that males can't wear make-up" said Mindy Ball.
Should Boy Be Allowed To Wear Makeup?
The Hamilton mother said she stands 100 percent behind her son, 13-year-old Matt Allsup, an eighth-grader at Garfield Middle School who wears black eye makeup, lipstick and fingernail polish, NewsChannel5 sister station WCPO-TV in Cincinnati reported.
On Monday, Allsup was told to wash the makeup off his face, with the assistant principal telling him it was distracting and against dress code.
"When I spoke to the principal," Ball said, "She told me it was distracting because of the black makeup and I said, 'Well, I'll get him pink,' and she said, 'No, because he's a male, he's not allowed to wear it, the public don't accept males wearing make-up.'"
"None of my classmates found it distracting or anything -- and it's not extreme. I don't see why I can't wear it," said Allsup.
Ball and her son point out that every student is required to wear a character badge –- and one of the qualities it pledges is acceptance.
"It says, 'Do you value the uniqueness of all students?' And they're not letting me be unique," said Allsup. "I don't see why we have to wear them if we're not able to express who we are."
Freedom of expression is what Allsup and his mom said this is all about. They vow to fight the school's ban on his black makeup and plan to hire an attorney to take the issue to court.
"I don't think it's fair if he has to take his makeup off. I think every student in the district should have to take theirs off," said Ball.
Hamilton City School District spokeswoman Joni Copas said after Allsup washed his face, there was no further discipline.
She said if makeup is too harsh -- whether on a boy or a girl -- the student should be asked to wipe it off.

I find it telling that they didn't have any quotes from the 'distracted' kids. I bet the only ones distracted were teachers and administrators. With all the shit kids say/do/wear today, this is pretty common and I bet none of the kids think twice about it.

It's funny, he's probably getting his ass kicked CONSTANTLY for this faggity behavior but is probably wearing the makeup because he's constantly getting his ass kicked. Funny world.

The best way to address this is for the school to endorse a once-a-month "Boys Wear Makeup Day." Boys who put on makeup will be rewarded by getting to sit next to their favorite teacher at a special exclusive lunch table. (The reward is mandatory.)

I don't think that is a "cry for freedom." I think it is a "cry for attention."
Since becoming a parent I have noticed that there a lot of self-absorbed parents out there. The kids compete for attention in an environment where the parents have conflicting priorities (TV, careers, drama, etc.). Often, instead of planning around the kids(s) the kids are tagged-alone as burdensome accessory.
I haven't often been accused of being a bigot but I suppose that may be true. I can't remember meeting a happy, well-adjusted goth.

Alrightty, but freedom from what?
He will certainly be free of the pestering of interested girls (Or boys either, I imagine, if that's the way his taste goes. Although I'll admit I'm supposing boys would be attracted conventional good-looks and that may be wrong). For that matter, he will likely be free of a lot of social interaction.

He can dress like he wants, wear makeup as he wants, do whatever he wants...just not at school. If kids want to kick his ass because of the makeup then it's disturbing the school environment, not to mention placing his own safety at risk. That's why schools have dress codes ... in part they teach something about responsible behavior but they more than that they are intended to protect students, mainly from themselves.
Bottom line: individuality and self expression is great ... until you have to get a job and earn a living. Then, all of sudden, conformity looks beautiful.

true. But isn't part of what education should do is prepare students to become productive members of society e.g. get a job? I'm thinking the real lessonis balance and moderation. Learn to express yourself, but learn that there is a time and place for everything.

Okay so this kid purposely wants to look like a freak, fine. The other kids may not so much be distracted but repulsed; they shun the kid, kid is a joke, whether or not it's right he is not accepted into their cliques. Everyone knows that's what high school is like, right? So after years of being not accepted, and an outcast, kid gets fed up and goes Columbine on the place for not accepting him. All those school vigilantes claim they couldn't take the rejection anymore. I know it's wrong to be judgemental and not accepting of differences, but what should the school board actually do? Try to get the one kid to conform, or change the mindset of the entire high school population? High school has been like that forever, any significant change of thinking is gonna be real slow in coming; and in the meantime there may be a risk of a bunch of innocent kids getting killed. Which side should they opt for? Like being between a rock and a hard thing.

exactly. It's like prison which also happens to be a publicly funded institution. If the warden says "no black colored eye liner" then tough........wear your black eyeliner when you get out on parole.
Hell, plenty of middle schools around these parts force kids to wear uniforms.
Point being, if the public school allows you to go to that school tuition free, then you do what school tells you to. Otherwise, have mommy home school you while teaching you the finer points of painting your nails with skull and cross bones.

You think that Columbine happened because of lipstick? Columbine happened because kids who were mentally ill did not get treatment even though they clearly needed it beforehand. Columbine happened because parents don't pay attention to their kids and realize they were burgeoning sociopaths. It had nothing to do with black lipstick or makeup on boys.
Not only that, one could argue that surpressing a child's need to express himself could result in rage. Personally, I would rather have kids expressing themselves so you know what you are dealing with, rather than making them suppress themselves then having an unknown quantity.

Then at Jefferson they stepped it up a bit and I saw a few mohawks and stuff like that along with the gangster crap. Then when I moved to Austin it was like a tv show. You had the wannabe gang members that dressed like gang members from tv and movies and you had the “cowboys” then there were the ones that dressed like their favorite tv show characters. sure, why not throw out all the kids with physical deformities too.
We're not talking about things people can't help themselves over.....we are talking about the kids that are screaming for attention. That's all this is and when they get that attention, it's distracting from the learning environment.
I think this issue has been discussed ad nauseum in the public arena which again is why every public school in the country has a dress code of some sort.
The bulk majority of males in this country do not wear face makeup. Therefore it is not 'normal' for a guy to put it on because he woke up one morning and wanted to.
If you let that go, then the line gets longer for kids saying "ok, now it's my turn to dress how I want to dress" and soon there is absolutely no dress code.

sure, why not throw out all the kids with physical deformities too.
But this is just freaking make up. Its only an issue if someone doesn't think he's "normal". He is not wearing blush and blue eye shadow and prancing around in a summer dress. He is not trying to look like a chick. Goth make up doesn't distract people it only distracts the "normal" people.

That was the only reason I kept going to school. I still remember sitting outside and watching the girls practice volleyball with Tish who also had big boobs. She used to let me motorboat because she thought it was hilarious. DAMN I MISS HIGH SCHOOL!

you're missing the point.
It doesn't matter if you think that it doesn't distract people or not. It is makeup and it's on a guy and the potential is there.
Therefore, if you let it go, then who are you to say that the guy wearing the blue eye shadow and summer dress should go home and change.
Why isn't guy in the summer dress normal too in your book? Who are you to say he's not normal? I guess it would only distract the "normal" people........this goth kid better not call him a "freak"

You don't have to try and convince me. A few of us joined track just to do this same thing. We would just high jump a few times then sit on the mat and watch the chicks run by. We were scouting to see which ones we would sit next to when we would come back from those meets out in Cuero or where ever.

meh. One day maybe his other testicle will drop and he'll realize that he looks like a douchebag. Until then, let him dress how he wants.

Because it sounds like your point is the kid wants to dress like a girl. Sounds like you were home schooled. When it gets worse is when people like yourself see other people who do not look like yourself and you try and force people to look a certain way. That kid is not sitting there saying to himself "allright I got away with "goth" make up on so now next week I'm going for a prince albert and letting it hang out"

Look my friend I am a method actor. I didn't plan on going undercover as a senior I planned on being a freshman. Don't get me wrong I would go after the junior and senior chicks but I will stay in character.

well you can have all the under age chicks you can handle. I think the important thing here is choosing the right name.

no, that's not my point and no, I wasn't home schooled and my personal background nor yours have anything to do with this argument.
my point is that if you let this kid come in with face make up, then it sets precedents to allow other kids to say, "hey, if he can wear that, then I should be able to wear what I want to".
And although it is a "public school" this is not public domain. You can look whatever way you want to at the mall, but if the school forces you to wear khakis then you wear the khakis or you a) move to another town/state/country b) go home schooling c) go private schooling. There is nothing in the constitution that forces a school to allow kids the freedom to dress as they please.
Based on what you've said so far, I'm not sure you even think a school dress code is necessary at all, but there are good reasons why they have dress codes and enforce them.
