View Full Version : My car....

Oh how sad....and i need some recommendations at the same time.
A few weeks ago my temperature light came on in my car. I freaked out a bit, but put some water in it and went on my way. The next weekend I got my oil changed and told the owner about the problem. He said he would take a look and told me there wasn't much wrong, just the coolant reservoir and temp gauge needed to be fixed. They could do it. I said "cool deal, I'll do it eventually." It kept happening so I stopped by this weekend and the guy ordered the parts to get it fixed this weekend. But today.....
It hit 260 degrees two minutes away from the office. Gurgling and all.
Now with the overheating I want to take it to someone who is able to look at it with a biased eye...like a volkswagen deal or import mechanic. Has this happened to anyone or do you all know of anyone i could take it to?

just the coolant reservoir and temp gauge needed to be fixed. well maybe you didn't make it clear or used wrong terminology, but were you leaking coolant. you don't fix a reservoir you replace it and that's rare unless you have a 10+ year old car. also i've never heard of a temp gauge going out.

it could be your thermostat. you need to flush your radiator. water pump may be going out. is your car leaking and fluids?

A lot of things can happen when you run a car on low coolant and overheat and NONE of them are good. You don't need a volkswagon "specialist"...you just need to get the leak fixed ASAP before you overheat it again and blow your engine.

Did you recently fart inside the car ? The Methane gas interacts with your thermostat because of the sudden increase in temperature it will trip the circuit so just make sure to ask the mechanic for the anti-fart blend coolant.

I don't know about a temp gauge issue but if your coolant reservoir is cracked or damaged you would certainly overheat. The temp light coming on is a byproduct of that so no real need to take it to someone else unless you just want another opinion. These days opinions don't always come for free. Not to mention that you used water and not actual coolant which is why you started gurgling to begin with. Water burns off faster than coolant.
Why not just let the guy who ordered the parts fix it. Unless its a water pump or you need an actual radiator I'd think the problem sounds pretty minor. The guy probably saw the empty tank with either a crack in it or a trail of coolant residue running down. I'm sure he'll do it cheap. I consider anything under 175 cheap.

You either have a leak or your fan is not working. Leak can be anywhere usually the hose on top bust every couple of years. If you put fluid in and it is gone in a day or 2 you have a leak. Check and see if the fan is running when you turn your car on. You may not want to use your air condition if your car keeps overheating until u get it fixed. If your car starts to overheat it sucks but turn on your heater and close the vents closest to you. That should suck out the some of the heat from you engine because you don't want to burn that up cause that will be expensive. If it is just your fan you can get bye by only using your air condition when traveling over 40mph. Once again though if it starts to overheat turn on your heater first. If temp still does not cool down you should pull over make sure you have fluid in car and let it sit for a while. Good luck.

If its a mechanical fan its the water pump pulley. Highly unlikely though certainly that car has an electrical fan. I'd assume since the dude saw something was up with the reservoir thats her issue.

You do not want to drive a car repeatedly when it is overheating. could lead to bigger problems like blown head gasket or worse yet, warped head. both will cost lots of $$$.
Start with the cheapest and work your way up. replace thermostat, check hoses for leaks and replace accordingly, and check water pump for seepage of coolant.
temp gauge should have nothing to do with it.

Whatever you do get it fixed, rather than doing it "eventually".
One of the worst things you can do is allow a car to overheat.
Most car engines nowadays have aluminum heads, when aluminum gets hot it warps, when your heads warp your coolant leaks, and you'll be in for one of the most expensive repairs there is.

so quick update.... I didn't take the highwway home because I was afraid of overheating. I turned off my air and that kept the temp down. By the time I got to Fredricksburg and Huebner to turn onto Babcock I heard a noise that I couldn't ignore so I pulled into the little gas station that's a Jack in th Box too. I poured some coolant/anti freeze in it and turned on the car to see what was happening. Turns out the water pump is leaking and there was a huge stream of the water/antifreeze/coolant trailing off into the sunset. Tow truck was called and so will the insurance comapny. The water pump is right where the accident I got into in June is. So somebody missed something! dum dum dum!

:lol For one thing I messed up by taking it back to the dealer and not shopping around. That was was partly because of my dumbness/impatience.
And 2, that was for both services. I think they charged me between 3-4 to change my thermostat/labor the first time and $600 for the radiator/labor like a year later. But yeah I'm not denying the fact that I got hosed. If that ever happens again I'm just going to buy the radiator and put it in myself.

I'm still laughing and shaking my head on this one.
Unless someone backed into the front of her car at a high rate of speed the accident was her fault to start with and her insurance company already picked up the tab for both cars. Another claim/insurance rate increase will make buying a water pump seem cheap.

I understand and I don't doubt my rates will go up this upcoming renewal. But, I specifically said "hey my coolant light came on but nothing was wrong..." Got it back after the repairs and everything was fine and then this happened. The point of impact was right right at the right headlight.

My corvette got crunched BAD sitting in my driveway. I rented a room in my house to a guy I worked with. He invited a buddy over one night. I was in bed with a friend and they were out in the living room drinking all the beer I had in the refrigerator. His drunk buddy was backing out of the driveway later and turned the front wheels about 20' too soon and ripped off the right/rear side and right back corner of my Vette. I could hear the fiberglass shattering in my bedroom...what a mess...it had a custom pearl white paint job and it cost a fortune to get fixed. The guy was so pissed that I made him pay for it that he paid me in loose quarters.

When I was in college, I dated a guy from Houston whose dad collected Corvettes. Over one summer he lent us 2 to use during summer school. They were from the 70's and I have no clue what the models were, except that one was a red T-top, and the other was a silver convertible. Drove them for almost 4 months, and I'm sorry guys, but except for the attention getting factor, there really wasn't much to that whole experience! I must have missed something.

so quick update....

And 2, that was for both services. I think they charged me between 3-4 to change my thermostat/labor the first time and $600 for the radiator/labor like a year later. But yeah I'm not denying the fact that I got hosed. If that ever happens again I'm just going to buy the radiator and put it in myself.

IMHO a good independent shop is better than a dealership for most things. The owner of the shop I take my personal vehicles to is impeccably honest and we have become good personal friends.
The benefit of taking it to the dealership (on the more complicated computer/electronics/engine/transmission timing stuff) is that you generally know they have all the electronic diagnostic equipment necessary for your specific vehicle. The problem with the really small independents is that they can't afford to have all the diagnostic equipment for all the brands and unless they are really honest they won't tell you. An independent shop has to be big enough to afford to invest in all the necessary equipment. My friend spends well over $100,000 a year just staying current with all the diagnostic stuff he needs.

I'm pretty sure the Progressive Claims adjusters have already done that and have instructed everyone that comes in contact to do the same.
At this point it's in the insurance company's hands. They took it to Pro Care on 35 and Rittiman to get it looked at yesterday afternoon and to the dealer late the same day to get a second opinion. So, now I'm just waiting to hear the verdict; and quote.

Yeah I agree. But the problem is sometimes finding an independent shop that does good work and is reasonable. But yes, once you find one who you trust, and does good, honest, work you and your vehicle are in good shape.

Verdict is in.
The dealer finally got a look at it on Friday and said they would stop doing all work if there were extra cracks or any hairline damage around the water pump or engine.
No damage to the engine, one of the girls from Progressive said there may have been damage there (had I said that before? I don't remember).
I just had the water pump replaced.
So, no the insurance did not pay for the repair (ended up being about $450...thank God for the savings account I have). But, they did agree to pay for the rental while it was determined who was at fault. So, hypothetically I could have been out the 10 days worth of a $30/day rental plus a $15/ day damage rental plus the repairs...so that's what? $900 and I only paid $600. Anyway.

Thats astronomically high but unfortunately its a result of these newer vehicles. More expensive parts and even more difficult to get to. Used to be able to change a waterpump in about an hour with minimal tools and very little disassembly. Now you have to remove half the engine bay to even locate some of these parts buried down in tight areas. These is why I don't buy new vehicles.
69 Camaro water pump 110 bucks and 2 hours to swap out. I'd take minor repairs over an expiring warranty any day.

Well whatever the case is you owe me for two extra days...I don't have keys."
:wtf
And I got my renewal quote today. They didn't drop me but raised by rates a good $1000. :lmao I'm the shit.
Well you call your insurance guy then. You have progressive right? I remember when someone hit my car and kept going I kept the car an extra week and didn't have to pay for anything extra, AND I left it at the garage where my car was getting work done at. Progressive is normally pretty good. Well at least that one time with me they were.

I called them later today and found out the manager was gone today. What is this? Managers aren't supposed to take days off! (lol). But seriously. I'm pretty sure it'll be taken care of. /rant

Did your timing belt actually break?
No, thank god. I took my car in right after I moved because the fucking morons that "fixed" my AC in Houston didn't reconnect the drain hose when they were finished, so my passenger side flooded, and my car that hasn't made any noises in the 8 years I've had it was sounding like the engine was going to fall out. They fixed the AC at this dealership and checked everything out for less than $50, but recommended that at 124,000 miles, it was a good idea to go ahead and replace it before anything worse happened.
It was just a bitch to be surprised with all of the new issues they found, like the leak in the oil pan gasket that had my engine sitting in oil apparently.
