Five cars of a railroad train derailed around 10:30 p.m. Friday in central San Marcos. Five cars containing hazardous materials overturned on the tracks between Wonder World Drive and Guadalupe Street. Residents of several streets near the tracks have been evacuated. The San Marcos Activity Center at 501 E. Hopkins is being opened for evacuees.

Evacuated streets include:

All of

* Alabama
* Railroad
* Gravel
* Camacho
* Roosevelt to Churchill Street

The northwest part of the following streets:

* Patton

Four of the overturned railroad cars contain sulphuric acid and the fifth car contains xylene, both hazardous substances. The San Marcos Emergency Operations Center has been opened and City of San Marcos Fire Rescue and Police are on the scene of the derailment.
