Hawks: gave 2 bad goals
Red Wings: gave 1 bad goal
Oh, and by the way, I'm not a Hawk fan, so it's not necessary to use the :rolleyes

Wings looked like they had no legs. Not surprising seeing as that was their 4th game in 7 days.
Not your typical "4 games" either. That includes a game 6 and 7 to close a tough opponent out and games 1 and 2 of a new series (the WCFs) with one barely going into overtime.
I expect a MUCH better looking Wings team tomorrow.

The Legend of the Octopus is a sports tradition during Detroit Red Wings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Red_Wings) home playoff games in which an octopus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus) is thrown onto the ice surface (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_rink) for good luck. The origins of the activity go back to the 1952 playoffs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1951%E2%80%9352_NHL_season), when a National Hockey League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hockey_League) team played two best-of-seven series to capture the Stanley Cup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Cup). The octopus, having eight arms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus#Sensation), symbolized the number of playoff wins necessary for the Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Cup). The tradition was first started on April 15 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_15), 1952 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1952) by Pete and Jerry Cusimano,[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-0) brothers and storeowners in Detroit's Eastern Market (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Market,_Detroit). The team swept the Toronto Maple Leafs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto_Maple_Leafs) and Montreal Canadiens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Canadiens) en route to winning the championship, as well as winning two of the next three championships.
Since 1952 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1952), because the tossing of octopuses is generally viewed as a successful symbol of good luck, the practice has persisted each year; in one 1995 game, fans threw 36 octopuses, including a 30-pounder.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-1) The Red Wings' unofficial mascot is a purple octopus named Al (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_the_Octopus), and during playoff runs two of these mascots are also hung from the rafters of the Joe Louis Arena, symbolizing the 16 wins now needed to win the Stanley Cup. It has become such an accepted part of the team's lore, that fans have developed what is considered proper etiquette and technique for throwing an octopus onto the ice.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-2)

[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Legend_of_the_Octopus&action=edit§ion=1)] Events inspired by the octopus
The octopus tradition has launched a couple of other object-tossing manias. Some believe that the tossing of these objects will bring good luck to their favorite team.
During the 1995 Stanley Cup Playoffs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_Stanley_Cup_Playoffs), as the hype about the Wings' run to the Finals grew, a fan at the Boston Garden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Garden) threw a lobster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobster) onto the ice during a playoff game between the Boston Bruins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Bruins) and the New Jersey Devils (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_Devils). Lobster harvests are often identified with the Bruins' home region, the New England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England) States, particularly Maine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maine).
When in the 1995 Stanley Cup finals (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=1995_Stanley_Cup_finals&action=edit&redlink=1) the Red Wings took on the New Jersey Devils (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_Devils) and Devils fan threw a fish in Brenden Bryd arena after the Devils scored a goal.
During the 1996 Stanley Cup Playoffs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_Stanley_Cup_Playoffs), fans of the Florida Panthers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_Panthers) threw thousands of toy rats on the ice whenever the Panthers scored, inspired by the octopus toss and the story of Scott Mellanby (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Mellanby) killing a rat in the Panthers' dressing room.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-3) The NHL eventually cracked down on the rat-tossing because of the lengthy delays they could cause, and it ceased altogether shortly after the Panthers' Cup Finals run ended.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]
Ten years later (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Stanley_Cup_Playoffs), during the opening-round series between the Wings and the Edmonton Oilers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmonton_Oilers), an Edmonton radio host suggested throwing Alberta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberta) beef on the ice before the game. Oilers fans continued throwing steaks, even at away games, resulting in several arrests at the away cities.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-4)
In the 2002–03 season, the Nashville Predators (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nashville_Predators) fans began throwing catfish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catfish) onto their home ice, in response to the Red Wings tradition. The first recorded instance occurred on October 26, 2002 in a game between the Detroit Red Wings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Red_Wings) and the Nashville Predators.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-5) Jessica Hanley, who helps clean the ice in the Gaylord Entertainment Center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sommet_Center), has told the press that: ''They are so gross. They're huge, they're heavy, they stink and they leave this slimy trail on the ice. But, hey, if it's good for the team, I guess we can deal with it.'' This tradition continues, in Game 3 of the 2008 Western Conference quarterfinals matchup between the Detroit Red Wings and the Nashville Predators the hometown Nashville fans threw 4 catfish onto the ice.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-6)
During Game 4 of the 2007 Stanley Cup Western Division Semifinals between the Detroit Red Wings and home-team San Jose Sharks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Jose_Sharks), a Shark's fan threw a 4-foot leopard shark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopard_shark) onto the ice at the HP Pavilion at San Jose after the Sharks scored their first goal with 2 minutes left in the first period. [8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-7)
During the 2008 Stanley Cup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Stanley_Cup) finals, in which the Red Wings faced the Pittsburgh Penguins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Penguins), seafood wholesalers in Pittsburgh, led by Wholey's Fish Market, began requiring identification from customers who purchased octopuses, refusing to sell to buyers from Michigan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan).
[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Legend_of_the_Octopus&action=edit§ion=2)] Twirling ban
Al Sobotka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Sobotka), the Joe Louis Arena (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Louis_Arena) head ice manager and one of the two Zamboni (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_resurfacer) drivers, is the person who retrieves the thrown octopuses from the ice. After he retrieves an octopus, he has been known to twirl it above his head as he walks across the ice rink to the Zamboni entrance.
On April 19, 2008, NHL director of hockey operations Colin Campbell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Campbell_%28ice_hockey%29) sent a memo to the Detroit Red Wings organization that forbids Zamboni drivers from cleaning up any octopuses thrown onto the ice and imposes a $10,000 fine for violating the mandate.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-8) The linesmen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_%28ice_hockey%29#Linesmen) will instead perform any clean-up duties. In an email to the Detroit Free Press NHL spokesman Frank Brown justified the ban because "matter flies off the octopus and gets on the ice" when Al Sobotka swings it above his head.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-9) In an article describing the effects of the new rule the Detroit Free Press dubbed the NHL's prohibition as "Octopus-gate".[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-10) By the beginning of the third round of the 2008 playoffs the NHL loosened the ban to allow for the octopus twirling to take place at the Zamboni entrance.[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Octopus#cite_note-11)

Habs have a good coach; I approve
Source : TSN.ca
CANADIENS TO INTRODUCE JACQUES MARTIN AS NEW HEAD COACH
The Montreal Canadiens will hold a news conference this afternoon at 2pm et when the club will introduce Jacques Martin as their new head coach.
Montreal will be Martin's fourth NHL stop as head coach after working for the St. Louis Blues and Ottawa Senators and holding the head coach and general manager positions for the Florida Panthers.
"I think he has a really good reputation from what I hear," Canadiens forward Georges Laraque (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=georges+laraque) told TSN on Monday. "He did really well in Ottawa and as GM in Florida and the people will be happy here (in Montreal) because he's bilingual."
The Canadiens were in the market for a new coach after the club fired Guy Carbonneau in March. General Manager Bob Gainey took over as interim head coach and guided the team to an eighth-place finish and a first-round exit at the hands of the Boston Bruins.
Martin spent five years with the Panthers after joining the club in May 2004 as the team's head coach. He served as the coach for three seasons and assumed the duties as general manager in 2006. Last May, Martin agreed to a contract extension to remain as general manager through the 2011-2012 season.
In three seasons as the Panthers' bench boss, he posted a 110-100-36 mark and stands as the club's all time leaders in wins and games coached.
In 2006, he became the 13th head coach in NHL history to record his 450th win and became only the 12th coach in NHL history to coach in his 1,000th NHL game in 2007. He ranks in the NHL's top 10 all-time coaching leaders with 1,098 games coached (eighth) and 517 wins (ninth). Prior to joining the Panthers, Martin guided the Senators to a 341-255-96 regular-season record in nine seasons. He is Ottawa's all-time leader in games coached (692), regular-season wins (341), playoff wins (31) and playoff games coached (69).
Under Martin, the Senators earned their first President's Trophy, posting a 52-21-8-1 mark in 2002-03. He also led Ottawa to its first trip to the Eastern Conference Final, losing to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils.
The 2008-09 season marked the Canadiens' 100th anniversary and while they started well, it has to be considered a disappointment for the franchise. The team won seven of their first nine games in October. With the great beginning came talk of capturing a Stanley Cup to cap the Centennial season, but off-ice scandals, rumblings of in-fighting, goaltending issues and the coaching change all took a major toll on the team.
Montreal is facing a summer of questions, with several of the clubs bigger names - captain Saku Koivu (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=saku+koivu), Alex Kovalev (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=alex+kovalev) and Mike Komisarek (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=mike+komisarek) - among 10 regulars heading toward unrestricted free agency on July 1.
Last week, a Russian newspaper even reported the team offered Kovalev a new deal that would include being named captain and were prepared to let Koivu walk away.
With so many players potentially moving on, the duo of Martin and Gainey will have much to do when re-working the roster before the start of the 2009-10 season.
Note: On June 1, 1988 Pat Burns was named the 21st head coach in team history, replacing Jean Perron.
More to follow.

The Pens went out like a bunch for 2 dollar hoes. They played completely uninspired and acted like a group of spoiled brats. They showed zero composure last night. It was the most pathetic display I have ever seen. As a Penguins fan, I am embarrassed by the shit I saw last night.
It is one thing to get your ass kicked....it is another to just drop your pants, bend over, and take it PRISON STYLE on national tv....and then all the bullshit penalties....what the hell was that about? I wish I could blame the officiating, but 100% of the blame rests squarely on the shoulders of those fellas who played like a flock of feathered faggots.
Well, at least game 6 is in Pitt. I hope they decide to show up and even the series.
Oh, and yes, the Wings are dirty. Just cause the Penguins went out like sniveling bitches last night, doesn't change the fact that Detwaw, and especially Cleary, are dirty thugs....and the league allows to be who they are. I wish the Penguins were more thug and a little less finesse.
BTW, I knew Datsyuk would be a huge addition to the Wings in this series....his return was vital to the beatdown we saw last night.
Pittsburgh had their chances....especially shorthanded. IMO, they should have scored 2-3 shorthanded goals........and if they had, maybe they don't lose their composure, maybe they keep their heads in the game, and maybe they find a way to stymy the Wings in the 2nd period and win the game. Unfortunately, they just couldn't find a way to convert on Osgood......who owned Joe Louis last night.

A statement like "...the Wings are dirty" implies only one thing...
You dont watch them until the Finals. The Wings are anything but dirty. Theyre probably the cleanest team in the league and honestly, I dont think second place is very close at all.
The term "dirty" should be reserved for teams like the Ducks, Flyers and the Vancouver defense corp. Otherwise, dirty is a term attached to a certain player, not a whole team.
Especially the Wings....man, thats like "the world is flat" denial right there.

I do as well. Theyre the class of professional sports, period. 20 years of excellence and counting.
Its a pretty safe bet that they'll be contenders for the next 10 at least, too.
In 10 years, I'll be 39 years old. 30 of those years, the Wings were good. 25 of those years, they were Stanley Cup contenders, year in and year out. Thats just...sick.
No other sport has that currently except baseball with the Yankees (and they havent won shit in a looooong time). Thats some rarified air to be in.
Montreal though had the most dominate run in sports in the 50s, 60s and 70s. No other team had what fans of that era had, and I dont think any fan ever will again. It was a 6 team league, then 12, then 18 or 20 (cant remember), yet the Habs still won more often than not.

1. The thing with the Wings is even though they don't win the Cup every year, they have been competitive every season; great management, period; Ken Holland is one of the best GM's in pro sports, period
2. Regarding the Habs, the last time they were consistently competitive, it was from the mid 80's to the early 90's.
Of course, we had Patrick Roy back then, which helped a lot, but we also had a heck of a team around him; why? because Serge Savard was the GM, that's why; we need him badly
And of all the Habs dynasties, the 70's ws the best; not to insult the Richard brothers or Jean Beliveau, but it's true.
Ken Dryden, Larry Robinson, Serve Savard, Guy Lapointe, Jacques Lemaire, Steve Shutt, Doug Jarvis, Mario Tremblay, Guy Lafleur.
Of course, Scotty Bowman coached the aforementioned team, which was a big contributing factor

Fleury definitely redeemed himself in these last two games, for that horrible display in game 5.
As much as I crack on Hossa for being a turncoat....I'd love for the Pens to stand pat with most of the roster, but somehow add Hossa again....that is, if he is FA next season. I cannot remember how big a contract he signed.

Choke job? This was a rematch of the Finals from last year.....the Wings were fighting through tons of injuries all throughout their playoff run. The Pens are younger and healthier (at least in the nucleus).
When you have the dynamic duo of Crosby and Malkin, along with a very good young goalie in Fleury.....you always have a chance to be successful.
I do not believe this was a choke job by the Wings. Up until game 7, both teams did what they were supposed to do, win at home. Yes, the Wings were favored to win the series, but they didn't choke. They merely got beat by a young, hungry, aggressive group from Pittsburgh. It isnt like the Pens won 4-0 or 4-1.....it was an epic heavyweight fight between the two best teams in the league the last two seasons.
I would love to see Pens vs Wings 3 next year.

BTW, the reason the Mavs were chokers was because they blew a 13 pt 4th quarter lead with 6 minutes to go in game 3. They win that game they are up 3-0 in the series and most likely sweep. But they lost that game, all momentum and ended up losing the next 3 as well. It was a huge choke job. They followed it up the following season by owning the leagues best record and choking it away in the first round vs Golden St.
Detroit's loss this season is nowhere near the same hemisphere as those two losses.

Not to take anything away from Pittsburgh they deserve it :toast:toast:toast
But man, you can tell the Wings looked tired.
Pens swept Carolina, so they had plenty of time to rest;plus, they are younger than the Wings, which helps with recovery. Red Wings won the West Finals in 6 games, and #$%^&$#@ Gary Bettman scheduled games 1 and 2 to be played on consecutive nights, because of fucking NBC.
Just pointing out facts, but again, congrats to Pittsburgh, well deserved :tu
Think about it, before replacing Therrien with Bylsma, they were 6 pts out of the playoff race :wow:wow:wow:wow:wow
And also, I'm happy for Guerin; great great pro, played with shitty NY Islanders for a few seasons before the trade, never complained. :tu

It was a chokejob. The Red Wings were the defending champs and the favorites to win the Cup this year. They had a 2-0 lead in the series. Games 1-6 were won by the home team therefore giving an edge to the Wings since game 7 was in Detroit. It was a chokejob and it was worse than the Mavs. The Mavs had never been to the Finals. They were fish out of water. Most of the players on the Red Wings have played in multiple Stanley Cup Finals. Besides, if people say the Mavs choked because they blew a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals then how can you honestly say that the Red Wings didn't choke? They blew a fuckin 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Shaq was hurt...Dallas had a 13 pt lead with 6 minutes to go in game 3. Neither team had ever been to the Finals.
Pittsburgh was in the Finals last year. It was a rematch. Pittsburgh was a year wiser, a year hungrier, and a lot healthier than Detroit. Pittsburgh also had the league MVP, Malkin, and the face of the NHL, Crosby on their team. Detroit wasnt far and away superior to the Pens. They were the favorites, but not by a whole lot.
Was it an upset, YES.....was it a choke job, NO.
Stop trying to compare every other team that loses to your piece of shit Mavs....it doesnt work. Very few teams can choke like the Mavs.....
BTW, as a Cowboys fan too, the Boys choked in the playoffs two years ago against the Giants.....it was horrible.

It was still a chokejob. Don't even compare the Red Wings to the Mavs. Everyone knows that the Red Wings are one of the best francises in NHL history. I like the Mavs but I will admit that they aren't one of the best franchises in NBA history. The Mavs also don't have the history and winning that the Red Wings do. The Red wings were suppose to win game 7 and they lost. They were also the defending champions. The Mavs had never been to the Finals until 2006 so they were newbies to the experience. The Red Wings weren't.

Blowing a 2-0 series lead is a chokejob. It forces your opponent to win 4 out of 5. Your team has to win 2 out of 5.
You choked.

DETROIT (AP) - Henrik Zetterberg says it was disrespectful for Penguins captain Sidney Crosby not to shake hands with all of Detroit's players after Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup.
"I think that's one thing you should do," the Red Wings' Zetterberg said as the players cleaned out their lockers at Joe Louis Arena on Monday. "I don't know why he didn't do it, it's disrespectful."
The biggest snub after Friday night's game was to Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom, who waited while Crosby celebrated winning the Cup with his teammates. But he finally left the ice with a few other Detroit players.
"Sidney was probably caught up in the emotions and everything," Lidstrom said, adding that Crosby would learn from the situation.

I didn't see if that happened but if it did, that is a crock of shit. If he did do it, I would expect Mario Lemieux to call that kid into his office and explain why he fucked up. Mario is a class act and that is how he runs the Pens.

...well, if Mario does call Crosby to his office, Sid need only walk down the hall seeing as he lives with Mario...in his house....since he was drafted.

I wasnt ascribing my comment to you. I was ascribing it to the Wings, in my pretend world where they read ST and my posts specifically.

NEW YORK -- Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals is the most-watched NHL game in 36 years.
The Pittsburgh Penguins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=pit)' championship-clinching 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=det) on NBC on Friday night averaged 8 million viewers. The network said Monday that's the most since Game 6 of the 1973 Stanley Cup finals between Montreal and Chicago.
Game 7 earned a 4.3 rating and 8 share. It was the highest rating for a series-ending game since Game 7 of the 2003 Anaheim-New Jersey series.
The rating is the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned into a program, while the share is the percentage of all TVs in use at the time
