1) Highly over-ranked and was a second tier PG that cost David Robinson several championships and teams just collapsed on the Spurs.
2) A person who had an alercation with Malik Rose.
3) A coach who could not make key adjustments and with his high pitched voice and school boy looks surely could not intimidate anyone.

I didn't like the self-aggrandizing little troll doll when he was a player. I detested the speech he gave after they won the championship. I really got pissed when they retired David Robinson's jersey, and AJ got up and talked about himself. I didn't waver a bit when he started coaching for Cuban.

I don't give a damn if he was on the first championship team. (So were Antonio Daniels and Steve Kerr.) He was an adequate point guard who had Tim Duncan and David Robinson on the floor with him. He may be called the Little General, but Mario Elie had more to do with making that team tough, and keeping them motivated, than AJ ever did.

AJ played the same role with the Spurs that Trent Dilfer played with the Baltimore Ravens. He theoretically ran the offense... but his main contribution was not getting them into trouble on the offensive end, while the defense won the game. Retiring AJ's jersey makes every bit as much sense as retiring Dilfer's would make in Baltimore.

Maybe Avery is a good man - I don't know. My main source of information about Avery Johnson is... Avery Johnson. But I know what kind of basketball player he was. He was adequate. Nothing more. Maybe he fit Pop's sytem particularly well, but you can thank Pop and the system for that. And while he may bring some value as a coach, AJ has never been shy about letting people know that he's doing his part, whether the players are or not. He's never figured out that it's about the players.

If I really believed that AJ would never come here to coach because fans like me don't deserve it? I would feel like I had actually contributed to the team.

When the Spurs first signed AJ everyone pulled for him, especially after he got cut on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day...and especially after a year with Vinny D at PG, but as soon as he got that starting PG spot locked up he started copping a tude IMO...and it became harder for me to pull for him, especially after the 94-95 playoffs. Whether he had to do it to be successful or not...without a doubt he did not have the game to justify his tude.

But after seeing him get kicked around a bit and remember where he came from...a great deal of my anger went away. Still kinda irked by the jersey just on principle...but if he starts acting like a Spur again I'm willing to move on.

I think AJ could potentially be a championship difference as an assistant...his style works much better when he's not out on the court bricking 4th quarter J's from 10 out and he does know how to pick apart defenses.
