2007-08 season: Williams had a nice year on the court for a 21-year-old, something that's easy to forget in the midst of his trouble off it. He bumped his 40-minute scoring rate all the way up to 18.9, had solid rates of blocks and steals, and made a huge improvement in his free-throw rate. Add it all together and he was a solid bench player who has shown the potential to be much more. In particular, if he can get his 3-point percentage above last year's 31.4 percent his offensive game will really take off.

Scouting report: Williams has a smooth-looking outside shot off the catch and it won't surprise me if he rapidly improves as a 3-point shooter as he adjusts to the longer line. He can attack bigger players off the dribble, too, but he's a bit of a sloppy ball handler -- this only really works if he has a big quickness advantage.

Defensively, he still needs work, especially if the Pacers plan on using him at power forward. He saw a lot of time there last year in small-ball arrangements but is too light to defend the post. He's more effective as a wing but at 6-9 will have to work on his agility to stay in front of smaller players. But he did draw 16 offensive fouls in just 965 minutes, a healthy result, and he doubled his rates of steals and blocks.


2008-09 outlook: Williams has a bright future if he can clean up the off-court stuff, as his size and shooting ability make him a potential 20-point scorer a few years down the line. But he still has holes in his game that need mending, and it seems likely he'll have to do it in another location given the comments the Pacers made after his latest scrape with the law.
