View Full Version : Would You Miss Taco Cabana?

I saw a posting on Craigslist from a person that had moved and no longer had Taco Cabana and was requesting someone mail him some at his expense....

I don't even know what to say about that...

Mailed? Yuck. :lol

I wouldn't request it being sent to me.

I would miss the monthly visit for some chicken fajitas on one of my busier nights though.

Taco Cabana isn't the best, but its not that bad.

I wish someone would mail me a Margarita.

PM5K
10-10-2008, 03:20 PM
Yeah it's not that bad, but coupled with their uncanny ability to totally fuck up orders, I rarely ever go there, but if I moved I certainly wouldn't miss it to the point that I'd want someone to send some to me, I could think of a dozen other places I'd rather have food from before Taco Cabana, probably more...

If I could find a recipe for their shredded chicken, I'd be very happy. That's about the only thing I really like there ... since my 3:00am, super nachos after binge-drinking days ended a few years ago, anyway. :fro

It's ok, there are plenty here in Dallas but I really only like their fajita tacos and quesadillas. Their bean and cheese tacos suck...

mrsmaalox

It would depend on where I was. If I was in the southwest I probably could get over it real fast, but if I was somewhere up in the northeast US, I would probably miss it a lot. There's a place in El Paso that's legendary like that, CHICO'S TACOS, people have their food shipped all over the world.

They know people get the munchies late at night.

6588 FM 78
11361 IH 35 S (Von Ormy)
13980 Nacogodoches

Glad they are coming back. It's not a trip to Cali without a stop at a Carl's Jr. They still don't have any near Austin.

Back OT, the best thing about TCs is decent and reasonably priced Margeritas. Most of their food is semi-nasty at best.

I have been back a few years and I have eaten once from there. But when I lived on the East Coast (Virginia and Jersey) I would have killed for Taco Cabana. Not because it was Taco Cabana, their food is just so-so, but because it would have been closer to authentic Mexican than anything I could get there that wasn't made in my own kitchen (when you could even find comino or Mexican oregano that wasn't $1000 per half ounce or something).

Seriously, I went to this one place that promised authentic food. They brought chips with this "white Mexi Sauce" that was basically mayo with garlic. Their chicken fajitas were breaded (!?) and the tortillas were the store-bought crap.

To top it off, the salsa was made in New York City.

I lived in Northern Wisconsin for a about a year...worst year of my life. On our drive to the new house (now the house we live in) we stopped at three places 1. HEB 2.Bill Millers for tea and 3. TCs for bean and cheese tacos. It was the worst year of our lives.

I don't know about mailing TCs, but mailing some tamales would definitely be in order during the Christmas season.

The reason Guacamole has a bad reputation is most places use artificial Guacamole from a 5 gallon bucket. My sister worked for Hardy Burgers in the 80s. The white people moving to San Antonio couldn't get enough of that shit. it was like liquid crack! They wanted on their fries and on their french toast it got crazy, It wasn't until they were broken into and only the 5 gallon buckets were missing that anyone knew how bad it really was.

And the ones who use real Avocados? they don't let them get ripe and they add onions and shit.

That is why a fresh large avocado and a sharp knife is all you need. You eat your meat and carve away the Avocado as needed. I found that out in Chicago when i ate some puerto rico food in the Latin King part of town.

The Avocado looked like a melon it was so big and very sweet. just thinking about that day I get a wet spot...........................on my tongue.

I ordered deep fried pork chops with fluffy Mexican rice that would make uncle Beans pappy roll in his rickety old grave.

http://eat.tanspace.com/photos/HappyCafe-porkchop.jpg

So before you dismiss Guacamole go buy some huge Avocados let them get real soft put them in a bowl with 1/2 lime juice and some salt (maybe a hint of cilantro) and eat.

Guacamole = mash potatoes in English. It's just smashed Avocados. it was up to the person at the table to add fresh onio garlic or tomato, it was the white man that decided to add it all together. Those muther fukers introduce sour cream to the Mexican plate! what the fuck? No one saw that coming.......

I love Taco Cabana, especially the slasa bar, wish we had it here in Oz.

If I had a few million bucks I'd bring it here, because half-decent tex-mex is hard to find over here.

My guacamole recipe:
2 ripe avocados
1 sm-med spanish onion, chopped VERY fine
1 shot lemon juice
1/2 shot lime juice
6-12 shakes Tabasco sauce (depending on how hot you want it)
a little salt and fresh pepper
mmmmm...

You guys are confusing guacamole dip, with real guacamole.

The dip has all the stuff mentioned above, Real guacamole is just avocados, Back in Mexico when someone famous or important like Pancho Villa came around it was a custom to have the avocado already peeled. But sometimes the avocado was not all the way ripe so instead of serving a hard unripe avocado they smashed it.

That is how is was first created. I prefer sliced avocado or smashed with salt,
http://37days.typepad.com/37days/images/2007/07/05/avocado.jpg

The taco already has the PicoDeGallo or salsa so i get my onion/cilantro fix on the taco already.

I sometimes cut up some tomato and coriander (cilantro) with salt, mix that up and put it on the side. I noticed that a lot of people put garlic in, but I think as a strong flavour it tends to overwhelm the other flavours. Each to his own. ;)

I don't put much garlic in. Just a little bit is great for the flavor. You gotta have garlic in Mexican food.
