Popovich, Spurs saddened by death of his aide's wife (http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/spurs/Popovich_Spurs_saddened_by_death_of_his_aides_wife .html)
By Jeff McDonald

Simone Newman, wife of Spurs assistant coach Don Newman, died Saturday due to complications from kidney failure, the team said Monday. She was 48.

“We are all heartbroken,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said in a statement. “Simone was a wonderful person. She was full of energy, love and passion. She always had a smile on her face and truly lived her life to the fullest.

“Don and Simone were a perfect match, the love they shared was special. Our thoughts and our prayers are with their family. All of us will miss her greatly.”

Newman, who joined the Spurs' coaching staff in 2004, was not on the bench for either of the team's first two preseason games. He will not travel with the Spurs this week on their two-game exhibition trip to face Detroit and Cleveland.

Simone Newman is survived by five daughters.

In lieu of flowers, the Newman family requests a donation to the Spurs Foundation in Simone Newman's name. For details, call (210) 444-5862 or e-mail Florelisa Gonzalez at [email protected]

:( That's really too bad.
Can kidney failure be a sudden thing, or does it have to evolve over time?

I think this is ShoogarBear's area of expertise, maybe he'll check in and answer.

My only experience with it is that my father died from kidney failure and it was just under 3 months from the time he was diagnosed to the time he died.

:( I'm so sorry for your loss!

I know diabetics can have kidney failure, but that's as far as my knowledge goes.

As always, a human loss of this type puts these games that we enjoy so much, in their proper perspective.

It can occur suddenly, but is more likely to happen gradually over many years.

Since the widespread availability of dialysis, it's rare that someone dies of the kidney disease itself (although not rare to die of one of the many complications).
