Tonight I'm really looking forward to Salim finally getting some minutes, and some more of Watkins. And I'm immensely curious as to why no one has made a blog yet, is it because it's not being broadcast in any way? I mean, it is on the radio, even though I won't be able to listen to it.

It is nice to see Mason make a couple of shots in a row, but I really am surprised he has not handled the ball very much in this preseason. I thought he would average 3-4 assists per game.
Hairston has a couple blocks, first off the bench.

Mason averaged 1.7 assists last year playing most point guard. It'd be unrealistic to think he'd average 3-4 assist in San Antonio playing shooting guard.

10-16-2008, 07:22 PM
I think we should keep Hairston. TOlliver hasn't impressed enough to prove to me that he is a substantial upgrade over Bonner, so I'm not at all convinced we should make that swap. After Hairston, I am torn between Watkins and Farmer. One is a pretty good defensive presence that Timmy hasn't had the luxury of playing next to the past few seasons, while Farmer can certainly score. Of course, Farmer is small and Watkins is limited offensively. I guess the one we keep should come down to how easy it would be to get another player that provides a similar skillset as either one of these two.
Hairston is 6'5'' or 6'6'', but he has a big frame and a tremendous vert
He's a guy I want to see a year from now. Quietly very impressive.
Kudos to the front office. I bitched and bitched. But they did a good job in the draft.

When he was playing "starters" minutes he was averaging 4 assist. I am surprised that Pop has not put the ball in his hands to kind of see how he does. I know he has not played a ton of minutes this preseason, but I though he might be a ball handler when he did get time.

If Bonner was ever going to contribute, it would have been last year in the playoffs. The Spurs were needful of offense (like his).
Bonner is simply a liability now (albeit a small one, salarywise).
No offer will be refused.
DPG21920

It is always like this with the Spurs. The offense is pretty good and they always get open looks, it is just a matter of guys hitting them. When they hit just a decent % of their open looks the Spurs win.

Yes, but Hairston has a couple bad turnovers too.
I thought Farmer had the edge because he could potentially be used earlier as a stop-gap until Manu returns. But Hairston is making a strong case for himself. If he makes the team, I think he'll go to Austin as soon as their camp opens.

This announcer keeps acting like the Spurs played their main guys the entire game. Only Duncan and Mason played extended minutes

I am happy with what ever the Spurs tried to do. The level of play and competition from the invites has been very, very good.
Watkins making the most of his time. I wonder if the Spurs even think he's in the running for a roster spot.
I have my doubts, but he's shown enough to warrant a long look. I wish Pop would give him 25 minutes of action in an upcoming game. I suspect he'd respond with turnovers and fouls...but he's another guy, like Hairston, that could be good for Austin.

Gameday: Spurs vs. Cavaliers
FOURTH QUARTER
Tim Duncan and Roger Mason played extended minutes and combined for 30 points in the Spurs' 91-70 preseason road victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Duncan had 16 points in 26 minutes. He was 6 of 10 from the field and had 13 rebounds.
Mason was the only Spurs starter to play more than 30 minutes and had 10 points.
Tony Parker played in the first half and had 14 points and five assists in 17 minutes.
Matt Bonner hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the fourth quarter. He finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Anthony Tolliver hit the first basket of the fourth quarter to give him 10 points. Moments later, Bonner hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to give him 10 points and put the Spurs in front 74-63.
THIRD QUARTER
Roger Mason is the third Spurs starter in double figures. He has 10 points and the Spurs lead 66-59 at the end of the third quarter.
Tim Duncan had two baskets early in the third quarter and added a tipin midway through the quarter to give him 16 points. The Spurs lead 60-50.
SECOND QUARTER
Tony Parker led all scorers with 14 points and Duncan had 10 as the Spurs took a 47-42 halftime lead.
Parker was 4 of 6 from the field and had five assists.
Kurt Thomas made a basket early in the second quarter for his first points of the preseason. That tied the game 25-25. Devin Green's first basket of the game put the Spurs in front 27-26.
FIRST QUARTER
Tim Duncan had eight points in the first quarter and Anthony Tolliver finished the period with a 3-pointer. The Cavaliers lead 22-21.
Duncan is off to a fast start with six points. The Cavs got 3-pointers from Daniel Gibson and Mo Williams to grab a 16-12 lead.
Spurs starters: Tony Parker, Roger Mason, Michael Finley, Tim Duncan and Kurt Thomas.
Thomas is seeing his first action of the preseason. Spurs small forward Bruce Bowen and forward/center Fabricio Oberto have the night off. Parker sat out Tuesday's road game against the Detroit Pistons.

Shit, hopefully Salim and Vaughn can hold down the fort till Hill makes it up, then turn JV into a assistant coach or something. I hope Watkins and Hairston make it, I like the look of
Tony/Salim(i know this'll be Vaughn, but I can dream)/Hill
Mason/Hairston/Manu
Bruce/Ime/Finley
Tim/Bonner/Ian
Fab/KT/Watkins
I guess Manu, Hill, and Ian will be the IR, the fucking 2nd best player, and the two most exciting new players, outside of Mason.:bang
And double :bang:bang about Bonner. He better do that shit in the reg season. I don't want two Bonners, so if Tolliver doesn't make it, Pop won't regret it.

Man, Watkins is a beast protecting the rim... I just wish we'd see more boards from him.
I absolutely love these preseason invites. Too bad we can't keep them all.
We need a beast like Watkins protecting the rim. I still think he would be VERY handy for 10 minutes a game playing D against other teams bigs. I say we keep Watkins. The Spurs can teach him some offense as he goes along. At the very least I don't want Pop cutting him straight away. Give him a real good chance the rest of the preseason to see what he can really do.

Red Sox win the second best comeback in baseball playoff history, second only to Philadelphia beating who else, the Cubs, 10-8 in 1929.
Unreal. The Sox just might do it again.... The Sox have Beckett going in game 6, and stud Lester in game 7.
This thing I think is going 7 now, the Sox have ALL the momentum.

3-1 count to JD Drew, intentionally walked Jason Bay to pitch to him, and he hits a ground rule double out to right field.
JD Drew has turned into a clutch stud postseason hitter.

Defense is a mindset and much harder to teach. It sounds as though Watkins has good defensive and shotblocking fundamentals right now, but needs to improve his rebounding. Offense can always be taught on the fly and can develop over time.
With Ian injured and Splitter not here, this guy could fill a huge void for the Spurs as a backup big. There are several new big men in the Western Conference this season. Personally, I don't want to see another "alley-oop" exhibition from the Hornets this season. This guy sounds like just what the doctor ordered to give the Spurs another rim-protector besides Duncan. I certainly hope Pop feels the same way.

The problem is that he spends more time in the "he doesn't". He is going to have to string a few games like this one together before I am convinced he can get anywhere close to averaging double digits. I still think he is what he is and that is not going to get much better.
Hairston is still probably the best prospect of our swingmen. He will need developing but I think that is better than trying to get something out of Green or Farmer that may not be there. Stoudamire is still the wild card as far as our back court goes...but I wonder where he will fit if he makes it. If he can get healthy and get in a couple of games here at the end of the preseason he could wind up showing us something. But again...will we carry 3 PG's? Still more questions than answers regarding him.
I am still on the fence regarding Watkins. We know he is a natural shot blocker, but will he be too much of a project beyond that? If we could Toros for insurance purposes in case Ian just does not come around I would be happy.
