Some people think Dallas gave a way "a good chunk" of its 2009 draft. But Dallas still has 8 picks, and 2 comp pics coming their way. Remember, they got 2 picks back from Tenn. for Pacman getting suspended again. Here is a breakdown of Dallas 2009 draft picks.
2
3 (Cleveland's)
4
4 (Detroit's)
5
5 (Titans)
6 (Miami's)
7
7 Lions
And don't forget the comp picks we will get for J. Reeves(Texans), and J. Jones(Seahawks). Probably another 5th and 6th.

11 picks. Plenty of picks to move up and down the draft as they please.

Also, lets look at the NFL trade value chart. According to the NFL draft trade value chart Roy Williams was worth 1500 points (7th pick in 1st round of 2002 draft). Now, Assuming the Cowboys finish with a top 10 record they gave up 920.6 points (760 + 155 + 18.2 - 12.6) That's the Cowboys first round pick (last 10) 760 points, 3rd round pick 155 points, and 6th round pick 18.2. They send us their 7th round pick (top 5) at 12.6 points.
So the Cowboy received a 6'4" WR as already been to the probowl (with Harrington and Kitna at QB) and ran a 4.37 at the combine (in 2002).

The draft trade chart shows why the Lions kept insisting on two 1st round picks for Roy Williams every time Jerry tried to trade for him (in the past). Hypothetically, if Detroit had gotten two 1st round picks for him they would have gotten 1520 points. Right around what his trade value is.

Jerry said that he offered more at the draft than he did Tuesday….so the Lions could have gotten a better deal if they hadn't waited.

Imagine all the bargaining chips they could have had draft day to get a stud number 1 pick. Roy gets banged up a lot, so I still hold by thinking they gave up too much for him. If he performs really well, frees up TO from double coverage and stays healthy then I might change my mind.

Very true...but this team is in a win now mode for the next 3 years. WR's take too long.

I maintain that 14 picks would be too many picks for a team as loaded as the Cowboys. They would end up keeping less than half those picks. And the Cowboys don't need to commit alot of dollars to an unproven rookie at the top of the draft. They would of invested their 2009 top pick to a WR most likely, now they got one with superstar potential and who has proven he can be a playmaker in this league. And with their 11 picks they will have anyway.

But it will take a while for Roy to get fully integrated in the offense and get the playbook down. Im sure they will give him a handfull of plays each week untill then.

I was waiting for someone to break it down like this.....I was too lazy to do it myself.

After a guy plays in the NFL, the draft value chart means nothing. The guy drafted 8th overall in the 2004 draft, a two time Pro Bowl selection, was traded for a 2nd and a 5th.

Like everything else, you can't judge if the Cowboys gave too much until the guy plays for a while. If he comes in, makes an impact, and help put the team over the hump then he was definitely worth the picks. If he busts then he wasnt. Given his talent and production so far it seems if he stays healthy he will produce. A risk Jerry was willing to take.

It's crazy how in the NFL, you're value only drops, but in the NBA, it only seems to raise.

Draft picks are crap shoots ask Lions fans. That being said I think it was a good trade for both teams and Roy will play great in Dallas with a QB that can get him the ball. Lions need a QB they are at ground Zero yet again:sleep.

Bill Parcells said it best on draft picks

"If 1 out of 2 can even play in this game, you had a really good draft"
