The final presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain drew fewer viewers than the second one but more than the first, according to early numbers from Nielsen Media Research.

Wednesday night's showdown received a 38.3 rating in the top 56 local television markets. By comparison, last week's debate scored a 42.0 rating and the first one on Sept. 26 drew a 34.7 rating.

The last debate was the most personal, and perhaps, the most thrilling of the three, with McCain mounting a sustained attack on Obama's character and policy positions, while Obama continued to link McCain to President Bush.

But the debate competed with the National League championship baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies, which was aired by FOX instead of the debate.

The presidential showdowns were overshadowed by the vice-presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin drew nearly 70 million viewers, the second-largest debate audience ever.
