100,000 people
Barack Obama has apparently attracted more people to his rally today in St. Louis, Mo., than to his August acceptance speech at Invesco Field in Denver.
Lt. Samuel Dotson of the St. Louis Police Department placed the crowd count at 100,000 people, according to the campaign.
"All I can say is, 'Wow,'" Obama said just after taking the stage underneath the Gatway Arch.
Politico has called Dotson to confirm the crowd figure, but has not yet heard back.
If the number is verified, it would be his his largest American crowd, second only to the 200,000 people who turned out for his speech in Berlin, Germany, and more than the 80,000 people who attended his Democratic National Convention speech.

What they're posting has nothing to do with Obama. They're posting the City of St. Louis demographics for some weird reason. What does the city demographics have to do with anything, when there are more than one and a half million people (on the Missouri side) of St. Louis' metro.

Huge crowds turn out at Obama rallies: 100,000 in St. Louis, 75,000 in Kansas City
By MARGARET TALEV AND WILLIAM DOUGLAS
Democrat Barack Obama turned out enormous crowds at his two stops in battleground Missouri on Saturday in what campaign aides said was a strategy of using his ability to command huge crowds as a way to build excitement heading into the final two weeks of the presidential campaign.
An estimated 100,000 people showed up in St. Louis Saturday morning to hear Obama speak at the Gateway Arch - the largest crowd ever to hear Obama in the United States.
Saturday evening, a crowd estimated at more than 75,000 thronged the Liberty Memorial near downtown Kansas City for an Obama rally.
With just 17 days to go before the election, campaign aides said they hope to turn out comparable crowds in other battleground states.
"This is the home stretch and our primary goal is to capture the excitement and energy that's surrounded this race," said Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki. To turn out large crowds, the campaign is choosing outdoor venues with virtually unlimited capacity.
Good weather - like Saturday's in Missouri - helps. Meanwhile, volunteers in dozens of Obama field offices in each of the battleground states are tapping phone and email lists to urge his supporters to turn out for the weekend rallies.

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them.
"And it's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

calling white people bitter and racist if they aren't smart enough to vote for Obama...
One need not be racist and bitter to vote for McCain, and plenty of his supporters are voting for McCain over Obama due to policy preferences...but you're a damn fool if you think there isn't a strong current of racism directed at Obama's candidacy from a large segment of the right.

I'll call her out for being corrupt (which she is), for being unqualified (which she is), for being divisive and dividing this country into pro-American and unpatriotic America (which she does), and for bearing false witness by saying BHO "pals around with terrorists" (which she does). She deserves every bit of that enmity. What I won't do is dig at her for her private life. If McCain supporters want to say BHO is too inexperienced or too liberal, or make fun of the fact that the more overzealous of his supporters have built up a cult of personality around him, that's fair game to me. What isn't fair game is resorting to racism to decry his candidacy for the Presidency.
What else is ducks and that other poster getting at when they dismiss the crowds he drew today by pointing out that STL and KC have large AA populations? Or when DarrinS posts a thread title "Colin Powell vs Barack Hussein Obama" and omits Powell's middle name but makes sure to include BHO's? Or the fact that so many conservative posters on here want to refer to BHO by his full name but never refer to the other candidates as John Sidney McCain, Sarah Heath Palin or Joe Robinette Biden? That's what I'm talking about when I say that this election is setting back race relations in this country. It's not about being thin-skinned and throwing a hissy fit when Obama detractors make fun of him. I can handle that. I draw the line at racism, and if you can't see how much it has manifested itself in this campaign, you're being willfully blind.

To deny it, dismiss it, or sweep it under the rug is doing a terrible injustice IMHO. It needs to be exposed the way this nation exposed the horrific acts of violence that occurred in the South during the Civil Rights movement.

What don't we "get?" I'm just really curious. What makes her qualified to be President? What did I miss in those Couric and Gibson interviews that demonstrated she has a clue? Why can't she make herself available to the press like a normal VP candidate? She's a newcomer to the national stage, and we have a right to learn as much about her and her views as we can before we put her so close to the Presidency...and yet all I know about her is that anytime a non Fox News journalist asks her a question, she descends into babbling incoherence....and spends all of her time on the campaign trail lying about BHO and dividing the country into "us" and "them." Seriously, what don't I get? What are the blinders obscuring for me?

Exactly. It would be one thing to take potshots at her because of her daughter's pregnancy and dig around in her family's bedrooms. That to me is the only equivalent for using racism to demean Obama and his candidacy. Certainly there have been people here and there on blogs who have done exactly that, but it's not coming from the Obama campaign. I think his point was that these people have been screwed over by NAFTA and by regressive economic policies, and when the manufacturing jobs went away, nothing replaced them, DC totally failed them. And when times are tough, people turn to their churches for solace, and to things like guns. And I want to believe that is what he meant.
But you can't get that from his original remark. In that original remark he unintentionally called those people racist and xenophobic in addition to saying they cling to guns and religion. Obama has admitted those remarks are indefensible and he says it has been by far his biggest blunder on the campaign trail.
So yes, you now know the Obama remix of what he supposedly meant but you can't say others are using it out of context or that you can clarify the original statement because that would be so extreme pro-Obama that even Obama would disagree with you. He f'ed up and has since put great effort into repairing that statement.
I'm not a mind reader, but I think Obama is basically a decent person, I don't think it's in his bones to condescend to people.Meh, I like Obama too but you are giving him too much credit. All politicians are dirty. You don't get to that point in modern politics by being squeaky clean. Thinking Obama is some sort of saint is naive and shows that you haven't followed how he's continually massaged his views to win elections ... which is the case with any politician. If being condescending to someone or a group of people would give Obama a better shot at winning the Presidential election, he's smart enough and crafty enough to know what needs to be done. And it's not play Mr. Nice Guy.
Truthfully, if I thought Obama was a naive pushover who doesn't know the tricks to his own trade, I wouldn't feel confident voting for him.

I think most people get that Obama is a decent man, despite the attempts by the loony Right to portray him as some kind of boogey man. His temperament, moderation, and pragmatism is exactly what this country needs for the next 4-8 years. This is why so many conservative intellectuals are jumping ship, they see in him someone who isn't going to make rash judgments, is going to surround himself with the best and brightest, and ultimately help bridge our fractured nation.

At least you admitted it. You shouldn't be ashamed of your own people. That is even worse than anything W could do to you.
But seriously, answer the question that I posed to you. What Obama panacea do you foresee? I've seen you make this claim repeatedly but I want to see what type of reality it is based in.
You're sick, get help kid. I'm not Middle Eastern. We're trying to have a rational debate here, if you want to troll take it to PM.

Findog, myself, and others who are supporting Obama are well aware of the strong undercurrent of racial intolerance that exists in America. To deny it, dismiss it, or sweep it under the rug is doing a terrible injustice IMHO. It needs to be exposed the way this nation exposed the horrific acts of violence that occurred in the South during the Civil Rights movement.
What will Obama do as president to "expose" racism? I know you said you feel that you and your fellow Middle Easterners have been treated unfairly under W but what exactly does Obama propose to do differently? If you think simply having a half black man in office is going to magically expose and cure racism, you are beyond delusional.
I'll try to ask this again. You can't make sensational and unrealistic claims and then refuse to give an answer to a followup question.

That is exactly what he says he meant.
I can't really argue with that.
So yes, you now know the Obama remix of what he supposedly meant but you can't say others are using it out of context or that you can clarify the original statement because that would be so extreme pro-Obama that even Obama would disagree with you. He f'ed up and has since put great effort into repairing that statement.
I guess my only complaint is that they've made too much hay out of that statement, but that is supposedly fair game in politics.
Meh, I like Obama too but you are giving him too much credit. Nice Guy.
Oh, I don't think Obama is a saint, and I am a bit troubled by the cult of personality that has sprung up around him. I guess when I say that Obama is a decent guy, I think of him the same way as Jimmy Carter, he's about as humane as it gets in national politics. Carter was probably sincere in his religious beliefs and he's done a hell of a lot of good since leaving office, but his hands weren't completely clean when he was Prez. I think Obama is a good man, but I DO think he has cut corners. Serving on the Annenberg Challenge with Ayers is an example of him going along to get along, because I would imagine for an up and comer in Chicago politics, he didn't have the leverage to say he wouldn't serve on a board with Bill Ayers. He hasn't been completely forthcoming on that, and he deserves some criticism for it, but I think the McCain campaign has gone way out on a limb trying to make that more sinister than it really is. And you can't be a complete naif to go up through the ranks of Chicago politics by being soft.
Truthfully, if I thought Obama was a naive pushover who doesn't know the tricks to his own trade, I wouldn't feel confident voting for him.
Most of what has attracted me to Obama's candidacy is that he was against the war from the beginning. I marched against the war from the beginning because I thought it was the wrong war at the wrong time. I would've rather been wrong for the sake of my country, so it's not an ego thing for me. Obama having the judgment to call the war right from the beginning gives me confidence in his intelligence and common sense. The other thing is that he's run a very smart and disciplined campaign. Nobody thought he could get to where he is right now. It's like the Mavericks knocking off the Spurs in the 06 Semis - the Spurs are like the Clintons - they were the brand name with the history of getting it done when it counts, while the Mavericks were untested and inexperienced. I just hope Obama can finish off the job unlike the Mavericks. How he has run his campaign gives me great confidence that he will make a competent president, whereas McCain has just been erratic and all over the place.

One thing I will say is that if and when he gets elected, we should move into the role of constructive opposition and hold his feet to the fire. When I watched his nomination speech in Denver, he started going through this laundry list of stuff he was going to do, and to be honest, as a country we don't have the money for everything on his wish list, and Obama knows it. He's making promises he knows he can't keep.

So basically you can't answer the questions. You couldn't figure out how to say Obama was going to cure racism without looking like a complete idiot. I get that.
Next time, don't make it so easy for me. It's fine if you think Obama is going to cure ills that have plagued all of humanity for thousands of years by simple being Obama. That's great to think in the privacy of your own home. But don't share that opinion without being prepared to be laughed at and you being unable to back it up.

I don't believe Obama will solve racism in this country, not by a long shot. What I do believe is that Obama is the type of leader that can help unite this fractured country. We are seeing proof of that with his record crowds and fund raising dollars. His message may not be working on you, but there are a hell of a lot of people in this country that are inspired by him and what he stands for. I personally believe that how a candidate runs his/her campaign is a telling sign of how they will govern. Even you must admit that Obama's campaign is relatively tame in comparison to what we've seen in the last few decades from both parties.
Now I personally don't believe Obama is some sort of messiah or savior. In fact I really don't believe many Obama supporters really do view him in that light. My support mainly comes from the books and writings of his I have read in the last few years. This is a man whose beliefs and views about this world resonate very deeply with my own. I do feel a profound connection to his words that I honestly haven't felt with any candidate in my lifetime. If this makes me an "Obamatard" or whatever you like to throw out than so be it.

What I do believe is that Obama is the type of leader that can help unite this fractured country. We are seeing proof of that with his record crowds and fund raising dollars.Crowds and fund raising dollars don't have anything to do with solving racism. And those facts alone don't mean much. Bush raised a whole heap of money and you don't strike me as one of his biggest fans. And there are a lot of horrible individuals that drew much bigger crowds . . .
His message may not be working on you, but there are a hell of a lot of people in this country that are inspired by him and what he stands for.It must be "working" on me if I'm voting for him. I just don't see what he's going to do to solve racism.

And every move McCain makes, Obama is right there is hit him with the Bush hammer. Kerry and Gore ran much more "tame" campaigns.
Now I personally don't believe Obama is some sort of messiah or savior. In fact I really don't believe many Obama supporters really do view him in that light. If you don't see it, then you probably aren't qualified to say whether that's how you view him.

Your problem timVP is that you insinuate and ASSume things that don't exist.
You assume I'm Middle Eastern because I made mention of how the McCain campaign is using the notion that Obama is a Muslim and Arab as a slur. Funny that Colin Powell made that exact same point today on MTP, does that make him a Middle Easterner? According to your fucked up logic apparently yes.
You also insinuated that somehow I believe Obama will single-handedly solve racism in this country, I never said that. What I do believe is that having positive black role models in positions of power is a good thing for this country, but that is a far cry from saying it will solve racial tensions.
To sum it up, Obama to me isn't the ideal candidate. But he's the best one we got out of all the choices that are left. If he governs from a mindset and belief system that is indicated in his books and writings I think this country will be headed in the right direction. If he takes direction from Pelosi and Reid and becomes a rubber stamp, may God help us all. Lucky for us, I don't think he will.

And the more you bring it up out of the blue, the more I know I'm right.
Funny that Colin Powell made that exact same point today on MTP, does that make him a Middle Easterner?Powell didn't make anything close to the same point. Go watch it again and remember your rant was based on W and also remember that not all Muslims are from the Middle East.

What I do believe is that having positive black role models in positions of power is a good thing for this country, but that is a far cry from saying it will solve racial tensions. Then why did you bring it up as a reason to vote for Obama? And it's pretty damn shallow to be voting for someone partly due to race. Race shouldn't enter into the equation when voting for president.
