McGrady To Miss Start Of Season?

Oct 19, 2008 10:53 AM EST
Rockets' guard Tracy McGrady isn't a lock to be on the floor for the team when the 2008-09 season kicks off in a little more than a week.

"What’s most important is to be healthy toward the end of the season," McGrady said Saturday. "If I’m not ready to go in the first couple of games, then that’s just the way it is. This is something you can’t rush. I would like to be out there with my team come the 29th. But, you know, if things don’t go right, then I can’t be out there."

McGrady has played just twelve minutes of preseason action so far and is suffering from both knee and shoulder issues.

He played the entire first quarter against Boston eight days ago, scoring 10 points.

"I just wanted to see where I was at," McGrady said. "Obviously, I was a little bit behind where I wanted to be. That’s why everybody got on the same page, meaning the doctors, the trainers and the coaches. It’s best for me to just rehab and strengthen my leg."

The Doctors, trainers, and coaches say he can play. This is just T-mac being a lazy puss.

Honestly, T-Mac will never be a politician. That much is for sure.

I'm getting used to his chronic gimpiness and slow healing.

Wish he would just take a page from Yao and just STFU and always say I"m working hard at coming back.

He needs to just suck it up and play like most other superstars would.

While a lot of people are making a lot of noise about Artest's volatility coming to Houston, I still think the Rockets' season comes down to if Yao and McGrady can stay healthy.

Glad to see some things haven't changed.

Different day, different story:

A day after Tracy McGrady expressed concern about whether he would be ready for the Rockets’ season opener Oct. 29, he was so encouraged by his play in Sunday’s scrimmage-heavy practice that he spoke confidently about playing in the preseason finale Thursday night in Sacramento.

“Actually, I felt pretty good today,” McGrady said. “I wanted to really push myself in practice, to start today a push toward the game on Thursday. I came in here, did what I wanted to do, went hard and felt pretty good.

“I am (encouraged.) It’s better for my psyche coming out here and knowing I can get up and down and I can do some of the things I had trouble with earlier. Still struggling a little bit defensively, but I’m coming around.”

Rockets coach Rick Adelman said McGrady “had a good day today. He practiced. He scrimmaged. He looked good. Offensively, he’s so talented he can get things done. He moved better today.”

McGrady said he felt so good that he was going from the practice court to the weight room for another workout. He no longer lifts for his upper body because of his arthritic left shoulder, but said he long has emphasized leg and especially core work, workouts that he said have allowed him to manage his back problems.

“Legs, just strengthen my legs,” McGrady said. “I’ve been working on my core my whole career. That’s the reason I’m still able to play. I was only projected to play this game four years.

“I have a slight case of scoliosis on my back. That’s the reason I’ve had back problems. That’s the reason I have to strengthen my core.”

I like TMac but he's just too damn fragile.

I remember there used to be heated arguments about how TMac and Vince Carter were better than Kobe.

Injuries are a waste of talent.
