Whats up all my fellow Spurs fans and 2k9 players I created this thread to share some of my knowledge on this game and help you become a better player. I am not going to say that I am the best player in the world but I would like to think that I am pretty fucking good:king
My tips are for you when using the Spurs but can be applied to other teams as well. I am assuming that we all know the basics of gameplay and know how the buttons are mapped and so on. I will write some strategies to help you utilize your players better. I will update this each day for each player on the Spurs, If it gets a good response of course. Here we go:
Tony Parker Point Guard #9
Rating:88
Tony Parker is without any question the BEST player on your squad. Thats right I said it. Yes he is better than 97 rated Duncan and 91 rated Ginobili. How you may ask? Quite simple in NBA 2k9 he is UNSTOPPABLE. 1 on 1 it is over. His spin is nasty and speed is incredible. Since he is the point guard the ball is always in his hands. If you dont think he is unstoppable I want you to do this. Have the ball with Tony call a quick Iso play size up the defender (Tap left trigger on Xbox360) then stutter (tap right trigger on xbox 360) and once he brings the defender in drive past him to the hoop. Tell me how many lay ups you get and and one plays you get off that alone. You can thank me later for that one.Thats just one of the things that makes him incredible in this game. there is more but I cant give away all my knowledge lol. One thing I will recommend is that you practice finishing around the rim with him.
Tony best crossover is his spin (Hold right trigger and move the left analog from dribbling hand to other hand in half circle motion just like doing a yoga fire with Dhalsim back in the day:toast) His Basic crossover is nasty and around the back is great for getting through tight spaces. Tony Parker also has a very good mid range game in 2k9. Dont be afraid to pop the mid range game. Its not flashy but it is very underrated in this game.
What makes Tony Parker the best player on the Spurs and what also makes NBA 2k9 so great is signature styles. Players tend to mimic themselves in 2k9 more so than other games from their authentic jumpshots to their patented Dunks and Layups. This year 2k really added to their lay up packages and there is alot of different things you can do. Now we all know Tony Parker is famous for his "Giant Killer" his teardrop. In Nba 2k9 he has this as well. You can bring this out by holding the right analog stick in the opposite direction you are facing(for example in 2k view hold down on the right analog stick) You want to use this when driving past the defender and you have an open space you hold the right analog stick around the foul line to start the animation. Use this with the size up stutter drive combo I mentioned earlier and you are just starting to peel the layers on this fantastic player.
Thats it for today if you guys are interested I will post tomorrow on everyones favorite Shooting guard the great Manu Ginobili .Also if you have any other questions on 2k9 I will try my best to help you out.

I disagree. NBA 2k9 is the best basketball game you can play. The fact that Tony is better than Manu and Duncan in this game has nothing to do with cheese and everything to do with signature style. He is a super quick point guard who can break down his defender in the blink of an eye. Just like in real life Tony makes his living getting to the hoop blowing by his defender with his super speed. What is cheesy about that?
Yao Ming is completely and utterly unstoppable in this game.
It's sick.
also, cheesers suck.
Yao Ming is God in this game.Just like in every 2k game he is in. If he is close to the hoop forget about it. One game Yao had 12 blocks against me:bang
Sufficient to say after that game I mastered how to finish around the hoop with smaller guards against big men. Now I damn near make Yao foul out everytime with Tony driving to the hoop:king.
Glad to see we have some 2k9 players on here. My Ginobili strategy will be posted later I am at work at the moment(I work on the Stock Exchange in NY)
Hell I shoudnt even be typing this now lol but we are not doing much today.
I suck with the Spurs in 2k9 atm, in 2k8 I was bad ass though. I even subbed Tony Parker out in 2k8 to go with a bigger lineup (Gino, Finley/3pt shooter, Bowen, TD, and Thomas were my starters) and definitely am guilty of some cheese back in the day. It used to be so easy just to have TD run towards the basket, throw a pass from Gino, and DUNK. Now the ball gets picked up pretty easy if you try to dump it down low.
However cheese is definitely still prevalent in the game, and one of the cheesiest teams has to be the Charlotte Bobcats. May seem like a suprising choice, but Jacob Richardson alone with his near pefect 3 pt range and phenomenal dunking ability delivers just as much if not more headaches than a Kobe cheeser.

There is a ton of cheesing in 2k9. They made the superstars more unstoppable than ever.
I used to find the lock down thing of 2k8 a bit much (like shaq being able to shut down Nash at the halfcourt line) but with the way they pumped up the superstars, it is really tough sometimes.
I also hate how you can hit 3's as easily as free throws this year.
All in all still a great game, but far from perfect.

My gameplan is to get the ball to Tim. He scores every time. And when the double comes I pass it out to manu, Matt or Finley and reck up from down town. And if the guy pisses me off enough I just dominate with Matt Bonner. He can shoot lights out from 3 point land, and no one knows it. Once they find out I just pump fake and drive the lane with him. I once scored like 15 straight with Matt and then the other guy quit.
Sadly my XBL gold expired and I can't play online. Althought its all cool, on the 28th Fallout 3 is coming out, since I will be addicted to that and it is a single player I won't need to renew until Christmas.
hey man easy solution..ive never paid for my xboxlive..just create a new gamertag, and follow the prompts to set your live account up, it should tell you that you are eligible for a 1 month free trial everytime you do it.. if you are concerned about your stat keeping, not a good solution, but if you just wanna play enjoy your free xboxlive..

the 2k9 computer is ridiculously hard.
Yeah I used to think the same thing. When I first got the game I instantly put it on HOF (being the superior 2k player I am been playing since 2k on the dreamcast) then I played a couple of games and had my ass handed to me on a platter. I took it down a level just to become acquainted with the game. The first thing I learned is that you cannot play this game how you would play 2k8. You have to slow down.
First pointer I give everyone is stop holding the turbo button. It's hard to adjust to at first but when you stop holding turbo you will see players are more responsive, crossovers are more effective.Computer has a hard time reacting to changes of speed and will usually get beat when you move your player one direction (not holding turbo) then crossover to the other hand and
holding turbo after the crossover.
Parker was unstoppable on 2k8, but now sucks major ass on 2k9, which is gay. Kobe is the new unstoppable force on 2k9.
False. Tony parker is unstoppable in NBA 2k9 as well. Kobe has always been a bitch to deal with in video games. just like Lebron and other Superstars. They cant be stopped but they can be contained. Hell all my friends are laker fans and all I play against are the goddamn Lakers so I know exactly what you mean. Now I have gotten to the point where I can hold him under 30. If you can get Kobe or Lebron under 30 I consider that a very good defensive effort :lol
Just make sure you win the game:toast
No better feeling ithan to play the Lakers and shut Kobe down. Most of them are trash and cannot adjust if you take their number one option away. They may pass it a couple of times but that dosen't last long, they regress to chucking the ball up with Kobe regardless who is around them. If your D aint right there is nothing I can tell you that can save you against them guys.

You're playing the Spurs wrong. I just beat the Warriors by 65 points on Hall Of Fame the other day.
Calling TP the best player on the team is also incorrect.
It's 3 easy ways to beat the CPU using the Spurs and none involve the "strategy guide" you provided.
#1 Feed Duncan. 9 times out of 10, Duncan will post up on the blocks. Swing the ball around to each player until the closest guy can lob him a pass that won't get tipped. A couple of post moves and it's an easy 2. Continue until the double teams start. Kick it out and whoever is behind the 3 point line should have an easy 3 except for Parker. That's a 50/50. You can also pull up and drive but only with Finley or Manu.
#2 may sound boring, but keep sending Parker in the lane for layups without doing all that fancy dribble crap. You should get hacked a lot. If you know what you're doing, you can be in the bonus 2 minutes into a game (I did this to the Mavs so Dirk had to sit and it worked) The only team this won't work on is Houston.
Finally, #3 is.......... I'm not giving away all the awnsers. Mess around on 8 minute quarters and it should be obvious.

That is nice that you beat the warriors by 65 but I disagree with the fact that I am playing the Spurs wrong. I wrote one strategy for one player and you can tell how I play based off of that? Hell at least let me get the big 3 done then post your theory on how I play:lol
Calling TP the best player on the team is also incorrect.
No it really isn't. I gave you alot of tips on how to use Tony in this thread and like I said he is unstoppable in this game. Duncan is great but he can be neutralized with constant double teams. Ginobili is great but he is not a strong finisher at the rim. Dont confuse not being a strong finisher with not being able to finish around the rim. I am saying he does not dunk much and relies on layups to score in the paint. Also good defenders give him a hard time and can strip him easily if he tries too many crossovers. Tony speed is what makes him the best player. He cannot be stopped point blank period.Trust me.
It's 3 easy ways to beat the CPU using the Spurs and none involve the "strategy guide" you provided.
I never wrote a strategy on how to beat the computer. I wrote one tip about how to get by the defender more effectively. The post I wrote on Tony Parker is a "strategy guide":king

Manu Ginobili Shooting Guard Number 20
Rating: 91
Here is everyones favorite Argentinian Lefty the Great Manu. Manu is a fantastic player in real life and in NBA 2k9 he is no different. Utilized properly you will see you have a great guard to take over in clutch situations. Manu greatest strength is his superior shooting ability. Anywhere on the court he is a threat. His 3pt rating is ridiculous and mid range game is superb. Since Manu has such great shooting attributes I think 2k wanted to make sure he wasn't abusable and decided to make his shot super hard:lolI dont know about you but i struggled like hell with his shot. Its like I would have it one game and make threes left and right then the next game wide open shots would brick. I learned that his release is super quick. Master his shot and you can score from anywhere on the court.
Manu can drive very effectively finishing with layups and once in a blue will throw down a dunk. They are so rare that when you do dunk on someone with him you appreciate it a little more :lol His best crossover I believe is the basic (Hold right trigger and move the left analog stick from the dribbling hand to the other hand quickly) Start by moving Manu in one direction (not holding turbo just using the left analog) then do a basic crossover to the other hand. Once you do the crossover you should have a lane to the hoop. I want you to figure out for yourself the best way to finish with Manu. His double crossover is great also and his around the back is very good as well.
Since Manu is such a great shooter this is where you can apply the step back technique. To step back Move the left analog stick opposite of the direction you are facing and press the Y button. This move is great to get quick space to put up a shot. Since Manu has a quick release also you have a great move to pull off to get an open shot. Another thing I need to emphasize is to use the pump fake. Great shooters utilize the pump fake to get their defender off the ground to take an open shot. You should do the same. Throw a couple of fakes out there to get an easier shot. An open 3 is easier to make than an contested 3 and a pump fake can be the difference.
Thats it for now tomorrow I will get to the Greatest Power Forward to ever play the game, Tim Duncan.

But I kept my paitience and stuck with my boys. Now that I've gotten to know the game a little better, I've won like 3 straight. Typically manu is my highest scorer timmy is usually 2nd. Do these controls work on the PS3, or no? Can someone confirm? I haven't been able to try these controls due to time issues. I love the NBA 2K series! 2K9 is awesome! However, I feel I am not up to par. In 2k8, I considered myself really good. My online record was pretty damn good as well. I am struggling with 2k9. Again, my online record is fair, but not where I want it to be. Either I am playing cheesers who constantly score with LBJ, Kobe, T-Mac, or they are constantly just shooting three point shots...scrubs!!! I hate when that happens! I think a bit of tweaks can really work wonders...help a brutha out lol! Go Spurs!
Tim > Parker if you know how the shot stick translates to the new post moves. Hes got everything.
Post up and go to work, its the only way to beat another human - that Parker crossover shit wont work on a player over and over. You'll at least need a pick and roll.

Ha and here I was thinking I was the only person who used the small ball lineup. That lineup is great for playing against teams that like to run or if you like to run a fast paced offense. Bowen is good defending power forward (be careful if they start backing down you may want to slide Timmy over to swat the shot) Finley can take advantage over slower small forwards with his drive and surprisingly is a very strong finisher at the rim.

They work on PS3 I dont know the exact mapping of the buttons thats why I put the correct names of the moves I am listing(Stutter,Stepback etc etc just look in your manual and it should show you how to perform these moves)
I went through the same growing pains you have. In 2k8 I was a GOD I played in many sim leagues winning championships and playing online beating people. Now I have not played 2k9 online yet(I always get a season in offline before I get online that way I know my players tendencies, releases what they are good at what they are not etc etc) 2k9 took me a while but I figured it out now. I know exactly what you are going through playing against Kobe and Lebron. Here is some of my strategies when defending against the superstars of 2k and these work great against the CPU and Human players.
1. STOP REACHING!!!!
Dont even bother trying to strip the ball from superstars. They rarely turn it over. Focus on staying in front of the player. If you can stay in front of the player you have a better chance of contesting his shot. Most of the time if a player is shooting and you are close enough he will put his hand up to contest the shot regardless. If you dont reach you will rarely get beat. I know its tempting against human players to reach when they get crossover happy but try not to get reach happy:nope. you will see the diffrence immediately.
2.Lock on defense is not abusable this year. You cannot just hold the trigger down and stay with your opponent. You have to pay attention to what direction the player is moving. "But how do I know the best way to shade the ball handler?" Quite simple look at what hand he is dribbling with. If he is dribbling with his left hand that means he is looking to go left and so on. If you already have an Idea of where this player is going you can back off(against human players not the cpu the cpu will knock down ANY shot you give them with any space on the harder diificulties with anyone.Seriously I have had Varejao knock down mid range jumpshots as if he was Richard Hamilton:bang) Most human players with Superstars play one way Drive to the hoop or shoot a 3. What you have to learn is to force them to play your way. I tend to give open mid range jumpshots but shutdown the inside and 3 point line. Why would I leave the mid range open? Cause No one takes them!!
I dont understand it. Trust me watch whenever you play against those guys and see how many mid range shots they take. If they do its by accident from trying to drive to the hoop.:lol
Work on your startegy of what you see your opponent doing effectively and take it away. Most people cant adapt and will continue to do the same ineffective moves over and over get frustrated and quit.
Tim > Parker if you know how the shot stick translates to the new post moves. Hes got everything.
Post up and go to work, its the only way to beat another human - that Parker crossover shit wont work on a player over and over. You'll at least need a pick and roll.
I agree that Tim is great on the low block and his mid range is nothing to ignore. I never wrote for you to sit there and do the same move over and over.Thats just retarded. Not for nothing though the Tony Parker Iso cannot be stopped. Even if you send a double team his dribble rating is so high that he will spit the defense and have a clear lane to the hoop regardless. I certainly would hope that my fellow Spur fans here would take the knowledge I and others have provided and add it to your game to help you dominate with your favorite team. I love this game and what makes it even better is when I smack chumps with my favorite team!!
Tim Duncan strategy coming tonight I have to go the stockmarket is closing in 30 mins .

good advice... i always have to remind myself to take it slow in 2k and when i do things seem to flow more offensively for me. ah the turbo button is a curse sometimes.

Dirk still wins. In fact, there's not many nba players tougher than Dirk. Let me know next time a player gets a tooth knocked out in a playoff game and comes back to finish it.
