What's the job function?

If it's Commander and Chief of the Armed Forces, I'd clearly lean towards the one with military experience.

The job description of the Leader of the Free F'ing World includes a lot more than military functions. I don't care if it's Obama or not, I'd like a president who can make a decision and keep their shit together.

Yes, but in the middle of a war I think the commander-in-chief role takes a little more relevance.

We may not always be in the middle of a war, but we are right now.

Are you telling me that relevant military experience is inconsequential to what kind of a leader someone is after their military career is over?

I'm sure a lot of veterans are interested in your answer...

At what point did I say military experience didn't matter? What I did was question McCain's outdated experience.

And my understanding is that most of McCain's military experience is either flying over the action or getting the snot beat out of him. No where did strategy factor into any of that.

I agree, as a vet, that military experience is important during wartime but its not everything. I served under a few different commanders (5 I think) during my time in and only one of them was worth a shit. Also its important to consider the fact that you can make up for lack of military experience with a strong cabinet and advisers. Another thing about most people with military background is we are sometimes a little cold and only think about the end result. That's great in some situations but sometimes a little more compassion and a different style of thinking is needed. My wife has taught me this :lol. I think its just as important to have someone that has shown they have good intellect and critical thinking skills. A constitutional lawyer would have that in spades.

It would piss me off that Obama, an applicant with relatively NO experience, TOLD me he got great grades, but wouldn't produce a transcript.

That said, I've never asked for a transcript from a job applicant. I could care less what kind of grades they have. I look at their job history, their accomplishments on the job, and I try to judge their character through a series of interviews (almost impossible - I've hired a couple of people who were great interviewees, but no so good employees; unless, of course I'm hiring a sales person; then the interview is about the only thing that matters - if they can sell themself, they can sell just about anything.

There is almost NO way, in my company, that two people, with such vastly different resumes, would be considered for the same position. McCain would be interviewing for CEO/Obama for a VP, or manager's spot - not gonna give keys to MY company to someone who is not proven AT ALL. Too risky.

BTW; Ex-military generally make fantastic employees.

Military experience isn't, IMO, a measure of the ability to be CIC. Nor do I believe college degree's do either. I just look at everything and what kind of vibe I get. Now don't get me wrong...I get great vibes from Palin, they just tend to be below the belt.

Easy, cowboy.

Most of our positions (except mine) require attention to detail; not thinking it's her strong-suit, frankly. Her and her husband, apparently, couldn't make a go of it in retail - so her business sense wouldn't impress me. Salesperson, probably - might make an O.K. manager; but my business is 30 employees; not big enough to have managers that don't also get involved in ACTUALLY doing the jobs that the people in their departments are doing - I'm, frankly, the only one who has time to do crap like post on message boards during the day.

Nah, after thinking it through; salesperson is it - probably be good at it; and in most industries, make a hell of a lot more than she does as governor.

Haven't had a military lifer or retiree on staff; usually guys, like I suspect Chalupa is, who were enlisted, did their time, might have re-upped once - dude's work hard, get the job done, and ask for more. They are also more creative in their problem solving than conventional wisdom would suggest (of course, we are talking about a sample size of TWO here). :lol

I have a question about this military experience issue. So guys in the military are told what to do and they do it. They get out and make excellent managers...okay. But when it comes to the Commander in Chief, isn't that looking at the military in the broadest sense of the term? From funding to the diplomatic fallout to the PR involved in selling it to the world, and including the overall strategy of the conflict? I don't see how a blanket term like "military experience" can apply here. That's like saying a PFC in for about 2 1/2 years is qualified.

I think that's the point most were trying to make. Its a component of many good leaders but just having military experience doesn't make a good leader.

Yes, just because someone spent time in the military doesn't mean they will make good decisions regarding the military. The president has military advisors anyways so he really doesn't make any decisions anyways without other input.

I'm a boss too, and have been a landlord, and what I've learned over the years is that it's nearly impossible to judge a person's true character on an interview, or even a series of interviews. People that I was sure would be fine, detail oriented professionals turned out to be irritating nitpickers, and others who I only accepted practically out of desperation have turned out to be absolute gems... it's a strange world out there, and I'm constantly humbled by how long a time period is usually required to truly see someone's real character. A good analogy would be scouting in basketball-- even the experts are routinely surprised and often wrong, year after year.
