I don't understand the negativity..
we're missing Manu, Hill's injured, Oberto is injured, Mahinmi didn't get a chance to play, Tolliver is away..and we still almost beat a very good Suns team that had ALL of their players..
how can we be so bad, but almost won the game? I don't get it..

The Spurs own the Suns in the playoffs, which is all that matters.
Given the injury situation, a few new insertions and rotations, and the quality of opponent I think the team played pretty well. The defense has to play better down the stretch but that should come as Pop determines the best rotation of players to place on the floor at different intervals. Stability is the breeding ground for consistentcy.

Manu didn't play, and they barely beat us.
Pop tried " things " (the "bonner experiment " )

I wouldn't consider bowen a liability. What you guys did having him face guard nash in the playoffs last year worked pretty good. Slow down nash and bowen doesn't need to score to earn his worth. Which is why I hate hime...

I totally agree with your post.
I don't get some spoiled Spurs fans. You have people already posting the team is going to suck after the FIRST GAME!!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable!!!
That's my problem...some fans don't want to be realistic! It's easy to say your team sucks after one game. Let's have some perspective and give this team a chance.

I haven't seen alot of "this team sucks" posts but I have seen alot of posts pointing out negatives that don't seem to be easy fixes. The problems this team had tonight (weak frontline depth, scoring lapses, overextending Parker & Duncan, poor interior defense) will continue to be problems for the next month. I don't think it bringing them after seeing them evident in this game is unreasonable at all. There were some positives (Mason & Finley's shooting, Parker and Duncan playing terrific) but this game showed it isn't going to be enough against the good teams in the West...

Mexican Junior,
YES...there was no frontline depth because Oberto and Ian were not playing. I don't care what team you are but if two of your bigs were not playing....you are going to miss them.
But to write this team is going automatically struggle....it's unfair.
It's the FIRST GAME of 82!!!! People have seem to forget that.
Let's reassess after 20 or 30 games into season before we make instant judgements.
This team has earned that credibility!!! Wow!!

There is no guarantee Ian will make any significant contributions this year, he hasn't even played a non Summer League game yet. Oberto would have helped with filling minutes but he has always struggled guarding Amare, I don't think he would have done much better than Bonner or KT on the defensive end. I commend you for wanting to give the Spurs so much benefit of the doubt but, as long as Manu is out, I see the writing on the wall. Duncan and Parker played great but, if they are forced to play like this every night to just keep the team competitive, we will be in trouble...

If they had to play a top-western-conference-team-that-was-eliminated-by-the-Spurs-last-year-featuring-two-of-the-best-bigs-in-the-league-on-national-TV-with-five-guys-missing-from-their-lineup every night, I'd be inclined to agree with you.

I don't think there is anything to panic about, IT was a really good game where it could have gone either way. Also PHX does seem to usually beat us in the regular season so thats nothing to worry about'
However, of all the missed executions I really feel that our lack of defensive presence in the paint was greatly exposed. We need more intimidation there thats for sure...

usually is the case early in the season. Spurs don't get into a defensive groove until Feb-March.

Considering the conference we are in, I don't forsee alot of "gimmes" on the schedule while Manu is out. The contributions we got tonight from Parker and Duncan is what it will take to win against good teams in the West. Of the "five" guys out, only Manu and Oberto would have really seen significant minutes if available. I think Hill, Tolliver and Mahinmi are too raw to get significant minutes for Pop's taste and there is no guarantee that will change anytime soon this year...

Well, after this first game, I feel quite at ease about the Spurs chances.
1. They held thier own against a solid team with an undermanned frontcourt.
2. They are missing one of the big 3.
3. Mason had a solid game and wasn't even in attack mode.
4. Finleys jumper looked pretty solid as well.
5. Didn't really see any signs of the dreaded Spurs Droughts.
It is only natural when you have a thin front line to allow more baskets than normal in the paint. Got to be able to save those fouls. I am upset, however, at the lack of offense from Bruce.

There's a big difference between a "gimme" and a big emotional nationally-televised game to start off the season against a team that hates the Spurs and has had it circled on the calendar since the schedule came out. Despite all that, and being seriously undermanned, the Spurs held their own. How that's cause for anything but optimism puzzles me.
If you don't think Hill is going to see minutes once he's healthy, then you haven't been listening to Pop since the draft.
Mahinmi is still raw and still young, and if healthy he would have seen big minutes against Shaq and Amare, particularly with Oberto's late scratch. He's been with the team long enough that Pop would have thrown him to the wolves to see how he handled it.

I wonder how Ian would've done against Amare. Bonner can't hold him, but he did a great job on Diaw. And Tim's block was def not a foul, too much ball.

I think it's quite unfair to evaluate the Spurs team without Manu and others and it being only one game. But I also don't think anything should be taken away from the Suns and their performance on earning a well-deserved win.
-It was in San Antonio.
-Duncan and Parker had all world performances.
-Roger Mason and Matt Bonner probably contributed more and played better than expected.
-The Spurs shot 50% from the field.
-The Spurs employed Hack-a-Shaq.
-Phoenix does have a new coach and new offensive system.
So, while things would have been different with Manu and Orberto and Hill, I think it was still a quality win by the Suns considering other factors that went in the Spurs favor.

Any win in the western conference is a good one, and capitalizing on the misfortunes of your opponent is critical in a long season. I'm pissed that the Spurs didn't get out of there with nothing but a moral victory.
That said, there's absolutely no reason to be anything but optimistic about this squad going forward as they start to regain players and become acclimated to playing as a team, especially given this team's long history of gelling later in the season.

I agree with ya both. But do look at our teams roster. Timmy could use some help. If Timmy was off like some nights he is, we woulda got killed. And not only that, how and when is there gonna be time to rest Timmy. I dont see Timmy getting the rest amare and shaq got. Heck the suns had a young center who didnt play as bad as bonner did. Our young center is still out of a spurs uniform. And Ian has been a spur how long?
